Where did "summer" go? My sister's children start school in another 9 days and my son starts in another 12? We've already bought all of his supplies, read the books, and that is left is to write his summer book reports. His last day of camp is today.

This weekend, I'm going to the Farmer's Market, cheese shop, and maybe buy a bottle of wine. Relaxing time! I am likely going to make some peanut butter cookies, but probably not much more. Although, I'd love slice tomatoes and peaches, and may be even fix some corn. Hm. Right now, I'm raising my morning cuppa, good morning.

School starts early where you are, Rob333! Schools around here generally begin the week after Labor Day.

Going to my sister's tonight after work to pick up these very cool canoe cup holders that she bought for each of the girls. I am making some "bling" for them! LOL

Tomorrow a friend and I are going up to my other sister's place to spend the night. She lives on a lake so we are hoping to beat the heat and do some floating and get some sun!

Nine and 12 days! Wow. Our schools start the day after Labor Day, I think. Enjoy that wine and cheese, Rob. Linda, I'm sure you'll bling them out quite nicely, hehe.

I'm heading to the garden while there's still some shade, then we'll pick huckleberries until the heat or bugs drive us out. Then it's a margarita and grilled smokies. Rough day.

Tomorrow is our annual Timber Days festival. Nice, hokey small town parade, craft fair, logging competition. This is the first year our Summer Reading kids haven't been in the parade, so I wound up in charge of the beer garden instead. Tough job, but someone's gotta do it.

Diane, we are NOT getting older. Nope, we're not. 2013 sure flew, though. Lars, I'm sorry December was so difficult for you, I hope January is much better, and all of 2014. I'm sending you hugs, and some to Kevin too. Grainlady, here I have the world's best neighbor. He has a snowblower on his lawn tractor and always clears the driveway. In return I bake him bread. It's a great deal for me! Katie, beans and cornbrad sound really good, I need to get some more of those mayacoba beans, I like them a lot. Rob, you are definitely way late on the gloves. My problem is that I can't seem to do anything with gloves on, so whether it's pumping gas or shoveling hay, I end up pulling the gloves off anyway. Ellen, enjoy those grandkids. I have the Princess and Bud here for the night, so they baked cookies with Elery and we'll have Nutella Crepes for breakfast. Here I finally got garlic into the dehydrator, it was starting to sprout in the cellar. I had planned to keep some for seed garlic but since I put the house up for sale in October and my nephew was still living at the farm, I didn't know where the heck to plant it. So, all that heirloom garlic that Katie sent me is now dried garlic. (sigh) Maybe next year. Tomorrow we'll take the kids home and feed the stock and fill tanks. It was a high of 10F here today and about -3 when I went to the farm. It'll be in the single digits to below zero until the middle of next week and then warm up, but we have "dangerous wind chill" alerts going from Sunday until Tuesday. I hope the tank heater holds out... Angelaid, sometimes it's just like that. Take a deep breath, it'll be better. Stay warm, everyone. Annie

Well, TGIF night, that's for sure. My day started out at 9 am on the farm. No water, the frost free spout is officially frozen. We took a 50 gallon barrel to Amanda's and filled it. 3 times. Back to the farm where we dipped it out with 5 gallon buckets and filled the tank. OK, time to set hay. Except the tractor won't start. We spend about an hour trying to jump start the tractor, give up and wrap a chain around a big round bale of hay and drag it out to the animals. One egg that wasn't frozen, hooray. On the way home, we lost power steering in the truck, apparently a bearing froze up on the tensioner pulley and the belt broke. If it had been warmer than 7F, with wind chills of about -20, the truck might have overheated. We limped it to Dave's, where he fixed it and we came home. Right now there are blizzard conditions and white outs and the wind is about 25 MPH. Did I mention that I woke up with a sore throat? Elery made chicken soup for supper and I'm sitting here with a cup of tea and a bag of Hall's cough drops. Tomorrow we go out and see if we can chop down through the frozen ground to find the problem with the water. The valve is 5 feet under ground, so we may or may not get that fixed. If not, we'll be hauling water in barrels for a couple of months. (sigh) Clink with my cup of Irish Breakfast tea, and think about me about 9 am tomorrow, out in the storm, using a pick ax to break frozen ground. Sounds fun (Palm Springs). I'm in New Jersey. Flew here today for my grandmother's funeral. She passed away last week, at 105 y/o. Her life was very full and long, her last year had been in a sort of gently fading twilight, and her death was, it seems, pretty peaceful and painless, at home with no tubes or machines. So her passing was as gentle as it should have been. Life was kind to her, and at the end no less. Laying on the couch, lights off, thinking about this house and the things left over from fifty years of being my grandparents' home. There are photographs, my grandfather's calligraphy scrolls, my grandmother's needlepoint art. Those will be taken, I suppose many have already been over the past couple of years. Then there is the random daily stuff that has no value, but that I recognize from fifty years of visiting and sometimes living here. Old toys and books, dishes, things like that. I suppose it will all be disposed of, except for a few bits that people might take for sentimental reasons. Then the house will be sold, as a fixer because it needs a total remodel, although in a nice neighborhood with a good sized lot. And that may, I think, be it for New Jersey, for me. My aunt and uncle and one first cousin live here, but without my grandparents, my connection to this place, a place I never liked much, will be done. I think I'm going to cook dinner tomorrow at my aunt's. She has a nice Bluestar range and that is where most of the family will be. Her daughter, my other first cousin, is flying in tomorrow. She lives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where her husband works for the United Nations. I don't think they like it as much as Switzerland, where they lived for the last several years. But the UN HCR (High Commission For Refugees) moves its senior staff around every several years. They don't get permanent cushy posts in comfortable cities; they have to go where the refugees are, so Ethiopia was, I think, better than some places they might have ended up. There isn't much scope for home cooking as an expat in Addis Ababa, I'm told. Especially with young kids who are adapting from their previous Franco-Swiss diet (and life). So I figure she might like a dinner at home, at her mom's home anyway. Menu undecided but I'm thinking about chicken marbela. I also have a hankering for ceviche. They may not go together, but tough. Otherwise, no interesting cooking recently. I have spent the last month on back to back to back business trips. So I've been eating like crap - airport food, hotel food, restaurant food. Occasionally a good ramen or other street food in New York, but mostly crap. As the weeks of this have dragged on, and I've gotten fatter and flabbier, I've started skipping restaurants altogether and going to grocery stores and delis to get "healthy" things to eat. So my diet has mostly dwindled to Greek yoghurt, canned sardines and tuna, bread and cheese, fruit, takeout sushi, and coffee. It's not a bad diet but there isn't much cooking or variety involved. Although I have discovered that canned tuna plus Greek yoghurt plus a little salt or soy sauce makes a creditable and oh-so-healthy tuna salad. And that chopped raw salmon, Greek yoghurt, and one of those super-miniature bottles of hot sauce that you can filch from restaurants makes a reasonable spicy salmon filling. When I get home on Monday, I don't have another trip on the calendar for months. I'm going to cook up a storm, enjoy being home on weekends, re-acquaint myself with bicycling everywhere, lose this travel flab, and appreciate springtime in Portland.

TGIF everyone. I've been too busy to get into the holiday spirit this year. Bagged putting up a tree, and didn't bother with the usual lights. Work is decorated and that's where I spend most of my time. We'll go to The Kid's for Christmas and she's all into being a Martha (Stewart), so I don't feel too deprived. It's a long weekend for me, with a rare Saturday off. It's been an odd week, including bunch of deadlines, contentious meetings and being the victim of a random act of kindness (detailed on the Conversations side). I started out my weekend Thursday night with a deep tissue massage... came home, had a glass of wine and fell soundly asleep in my chair. Ahhhhh....... Today was a trip to town for a doctor appt. during our first real snow. People got complacent, I think...wrecks and ambulances everywhere. So we grabbed some groceries and ran for home. I got my sis's package mailed.... main mission accomplished. Tomorrow I'll wrap the kids' presents, put together goodie baskets for work. Maybe bake something using the wonderful crystallized ginger one of my girls brought me from Australia. Sunday DH made an appointment for a hearing test. At noon. At Costco. On the Sunday before Christmas. argh. Clinking with a cup of eggnog laced w/ rum. Be healthy and travel safely everyone.

Long weekend here in Ontario ! Meredith is coming up to the cottage and bringing 5 friends.....all are between 24-28 years old and look mighty fine in their bikini's.

I'm betting most of the men on the lake will be over "for a beer" with Clive at some point or other!

It's regatta weekend so the lake will be so busy. We have a party boat "Happy Hour" cruise planned Saturday with some neighbours and then a BBQ followed by fireworks at the Marina. I'm smoking a turkey , never have before so wish me luck.

Sunday I'm having a sticky buns and coffee "open house" on the dock. First time so we'll see how it goes.

Rob, have fun with that cheese shop, I love that type of shopping.

School doesn't start here until after Labor Day either, and my tomatoes aren't even ripe yet, except the cherry tomatoes, how could school start already? I sure hope your schools are air conditioned!

Linda, have fun with your sisters, it sounds like a perfect activity for summer.

Katiec, that beer garden sounds like a tough job, don't overwork yourself. (grin)

Sharon, sticky buns and coffee on the dock sound good to me. Good luck on that smoked turkey, I'm betting it'll be good, and well received. Yes, I'm betting you'e right on Clive's visitors, LOL.

Here it's going to be 90 tomorrow and sunday. I have 600 insulators to attach to fence posts, I'm running a single electric wire around my existing barrier fence, just for good measure since I now have a bull on the place. They tend to be a bit harder to keep contained, and since my sister isn't living with stepmom any more, there's no one there to even notice an errant animal.

Elery is here to help me, we'll see how much of that mile of fence we actually get done.

I don't know where the summer went either, but we've had a wonderfully pleasant July, and I've been spending a lot of time outside after work, just relaxing and not getting much done. It's a little too peaceful and pleasant in my back yard now, and so I just sit and watch the hummingbirds and other birds that visit. One I think is an oriole of sorts - it has a red chest, and it sits and poses on top of my wall fountain before getting a drink. It never does this when I have a camera, however.

Your outdoor water activities all sound fun, but I won't be doing anything like that until next month. I think I would prefer a beer garden to parade myself, and so I hope you will enjoy it!

Sharon, I smoked a turkey breast last week-end, and it turned out great - I'm sure your whole turkey will too. I basted mine a lot and used Cajun seasoning and mesquite wood for the smoke. What kind of wood do you use in Ontario?

Good luck with your fence and bull, Annie! That's something my father and brother always had to do, but now they have my nephew to help them.

My main activity this week-end will be finishing the drapes for my bedroom window. I started them two weeks ago and let them sit in the sewing room for the past week while I sat outside in the yard after work chillin' out. Last week-end we shopped for our trip, but we're all fitted out now, I think. I just need to get some memory for the dive mask camera I just got. The camera is attached to the mask, and it will take two hours of video without having to change batteries. It takes still pictures too.

I'm hoping Don will bring some rain to my parents in Texas this week-end.

Wow, that is early for school to start.

As Annie said, it's going to be in the 90's both days this weekend in Michigan. It feels more like mid August instead of the end of July. I wish it wasn't quite so hot. I feel like I'm missing summer.

We will be out on our boat some this weekend. Maybe just floating in the lake too.

Sharon, I smoked a turkey for Memorial Weekend. I misread the recipe and thought I was suppose to smoke at 180 degrees but in fact, that was the temperature the meat should be at. Needless to say, it took about 4 hours longer than planned. The heat should have been around 240-250. I did discovered the mistake about 1/2 through the smoking process.

Just staying in the house tonight resting up for the weekend.
