My turn for paint color help (long)

I'm finally ready to take the first step in updating my kitchen. I want to remove the wallpaper and have the walls textured and painted. I want a French Country kitchen and my original vision was a gold/yellow color on the walls with red accents. I really like these colors:

Some of you will remember my search for the perfect color to match my paneling in the family room. I finally decided on Woodstock Tan which looks brown during the day and green at night.

Here's a picture before I painted the entryway. That's the hallway to the left and I need to paint it in a color that blends with the family room.

My question in, should I paint the kitchen in Woodstock Tan so that these rooms all blend together or should I keep the hallway, entryway, office in similar colors and use the gold in the kitchen.

What accent color would I use with the Woodstock Tan and could I get the French Country look with it? I would love to get new cabinets, but I may end up having to paint what I have. Whatever I do, the cabinets will be off white.

So, what do you think? Should I go with my original vision of gold/yellow or stick with the Woodstock Tan to match the rest of the house?

Go for the Gold!!! In the kitchen, that is.

Are you taking all that paper down yourself? That will be quite a task. But the results will make all your efforts worth doing!

I remember your foyer paint post well! I also remember a post on your kitchen and your desire to change to a more french country look. Glad to see you are ready to tackle something you've wanted! There is no time like the present! I'm sure you remember HPJ185 from RMS. Her home was featured in a WAshington D.C. publication and that article found its way to a blog. I was one of many who fell in love with her home and I had made many notes on the colors she used throughout her home. She was very generous in answering questions! Her manin LR is painted in Woodstock Tan. The foyer next door to it is painted in BM Ladyfinger. Her kitchen and FR, is in BM Bleeker Beige. All these seem to work beautifully togther!
If you are considering painting your cabs, then some nice creamy whites are BM White Dove, RL Starched Apron, BM Lambskin and BM Cloud White. HPJ's cabs were done in Muralo's Patagonia with Bartley's fruitwood glaze.. I'm sure other's will chime in with great suggestions for you. Although it is a big job, painting the cabs and walls will have a big impact in your kitchen and you will well be on your way to the look you love! Inspiration pics of HPJ's home are linked below! Let me just say, you guys are just the best. I have actually LOL at some of your comments. I love it. Ingrid: As mentioned in my post, I'm painting the railing back to black, its original color. It's been white for more than 10 years, and I'm tired of it. I think I have a picture of it when it was white last week. I will post in my next set of pictures. I'm not sure the picture will look good with a black frame. I will post it also and you can give me your critique then. The black chandy is exactly my thought process. Graywings: I like your idea of a bench, but space is premium in that small space. I'm afraid a bench might really congest it more, but I am willing to give it a try as that never occurred to me. Moving the shelf off the wall will allow me to see the bench. Lighting is definitely the key as the ceiling is quite high and I don't have that lovely window Oceanna has. During the holidays, I place poinsettias on every other step and have gotten lots of compliments, but a few of you are poo-pooing the plants, so that's probably a scratch. The word art on the risers (every other one), may be enough. You may be on to something about the clock wall and I may just have the thing to try. Where are you suggesting I put chair rail in the foyer? Love my black wrought iron railings. Enailes: Yes, I love pastels. I'm loving the idea of cream walls for that area. HD finally has samples that can be purchased for $3.97. I bought three today. Just remembered, I have sconces, not brass and glass, that I purchased from JCP at a ridiculously low price. Will pull them out to take a look. The swing doors are going away-just not yet. I consider them part of the kitchen so they will be in kitchen redo. The kids love those doors, as does my contractor. What does he know at 33 :). Teacats-You just blow me away. I am lol at your post. Simple and to the point--stop apologizing-this is just what I need. Got my big girl panties on today and nothing you can say offends or hurts. I asked for it remember? The railings were white for 10+ years--time for something new. Door wouldn't look good in white, imo. It's solid and it will either take black or remain as is with a redoing of the stain. You are the second person to suggest a bench. I am going to try it. Will "borrow" a bench just to get an idea. I still think the area's too small but you guys have me just about convinced to do it. The swing doors are addressed above. Joanie: Got three paint samples from HD today. Will mark up more of the wall and take pictures. Enailes suggested neutrals also. The colors are more creams than tans. I like Behr paint and will choose from one of their palettes. I think I have an idea what you might have over your front door. No dried flowers-I promise :). I saw that Design to Sell show. I love my wrought iron railing, so it'll have to stay. I have a large family room downstairs with bookcases. I think once something black is hanging from the ceiling-the railing will seem a good choice. Magazines and HGTV are killing me. When I was updating my two small bathrooms, I used several ideas from both and loved them. I have two months of DTS taped for other ideas. Always something good. Pal - thanks so much for your suggestions, you always have such good advice! I really, really like those greens a lot! Could I pick your brain and ask you about house # & sconce finishes? Originally I was planning on nickel/ silver #'s and sconces (there will be an electric sconce on both sides of the door) but as I look at the weathered finish of the door hardware I wonder if silver is the best option? Should it be black? Brass? Something else? What do you think? I'm really leaning towards the Garden Grove for the front door. White rockers and a white porch swing will be on the front porch.

Lovely home, Nancy. I trust my3dogs' advice on paint for the study and would definitely use the lovely toile as a window seat cushion and as cushion fabric on the chairs. Would a toile valance compete with the transferware.? If so, perhaps a solid blue cornice edged 2 1/2" in the toile. Until the exercise equipment finds another spot, consider a whimsical touch by using the toile on the bike seat cover, a cover for what appears to be the bench pad and as basket liners. All of these can be made from scraps so you're not wasting material. Don't want to put the equipment where you lose the incentive to use it, so have fun with it. In the bath, you can provide DH with his earth tones with a warm stone ranging from Dark Emperador to Light Rosalia countertop. Find a stone which speaks to you before continuing with the paint swatch on the wall. I'd be tempted to use the toile only as accent, perhaps at the top 20% of the shower curtain, perhaps with a matching blue ball fringe, and as the loops on Roman shades, with both curtains in a solid or tone on tone stripe in the toile background color. I too love real lamps in baths, and hope you keep one there even if you add a sconce or cans. Add a real rug if the bath doesn't get abused, and you have an inviting place that both you and your husband will find comfortable. Nearly twenty years ago I had a wonderful red textured paper (vertical ridges so likely your paper gives a similar impression from a distance) in a bath. I'm sure your toile is lovely with red wallpaper although my look was quite contemporary. Four years ago I fell in love with a tone on tone island toile I used in a guest bath in a previous home. Again, a more contemporary twist, but toile is always elegant. It's easy to get stuck if you try to focus on several areas. I understand the importance you may place on keeping a sense of cohesion, but it may be easier to start with the stone, finish the bath, then move on to the study. Trust your instincts as they've already served you beautifully.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and kind thoughts. . .greatly appreciated!! I contacted my insurance adjuster on the original roof claim. While they are very interested in the outcome, they indicated that this is an issue between me and the roofing company. . .totally separate from the original claim on the roof. But they did give me some pointers on working through the situation. A water remediation company coming out tomorrow to do an assessment (based on the recommendation of my adjuster) so I think that will give me some idea of the full extent of the damage and where we need to go from there. I have taken lots of pictures and won't let anyone touch anything until I'm satisfied the damage has been fully documented. Dedtired, my attitude not really as good as it sounds. . .but as the expression goes. ."it is what it is" and nothing can change that. . .and I'm hoping that be being patient and somewhat understanding, they (roofing company) will be willing to do a little more than if I landed in the middle of them with combat boots. Thank you all again. . .I'll let you know how it all turns out!

I'd do the gold. You don't want too much of your house the same color - especially because it's a darker color. I have my kitchen painted Wilmington Tan. I really like it. Not a bright gold like SW Blonde, but enough of a gold to be striking and it goes with everything.

I think painting your cabinets would look great with the gold paint, but they probably would look ok with the current oak color too. If you paint your cabinets, just make sure you do a test around your appliances. Getting a white/cream color that doesn't make your appliance look yellow would be important to me. SW Alabaster is a nice white - not bright white, not a yellow white. Just a soft off white, but one that looks white when it's on its own.

threegrad - I'm going to start looking for someone to do the walls for me. When they first wallpapered this house, they didn't prep any of the walls, so it has been a nightmare trying to get the wallpaper off in other rooms. When we rewallpaperred the kitchen (yes, I actually picked out the current wallpaper), the lady just wallpapered over the old. I'm thinking we'll need to remove the top layer of wallpaper, but will be able to texture over the original.

kmcg85 - I definitely remember the bedroom, but I don't remember seeing the rest of her house, so thanks for the post. I've never seen anyone else use Woodstock Tan.

Thanks for the suggestions on a good off white. I'm looking for something that's definitely darker than white, but without too much yellow even though I want it to be on the warm side. Whites are tough to pick out.

Are you painting the cabinets? Or the trim? The other photos all show the gold with white trim and you have natural wood. You may not get the same feel if you leave everything in natural wood.

I remember seeing your photos in another thread. I do not remember if there were other things planned for the kitchen or just the painting. Are there going to be other changes too?

dilly_dally - I eventually want to paint the cabinets and the trim in an off white and get granite countertops. I'm thinking of a granite in the gold family like Santa Cecilia.

I forgot to mention that I'm thinking about painting my office in Yorkshire Tan, which is on the same strip as Woodstock Tan, but I haven't decided on a color for the hallway.

I think you should definitely go for the gold in your kitchen. When you paint your cabinets will you also be painting your trim and baseboards?

Another suggestion for a gold color is SW1390 White Raisin. A very pretty color.

Thanks, kmcg85. I'm going to try and pick up some samples before long and paint some poster boards. I'll look at White Raisin. It seems like I remember someone on here using that recently.

mldao - Yes, I will paint the trim and baseboards also. I'd really like to get new cabinet doors that go up to the ceiling, but I'm not sure how much that will cost.

Laurie, I remember your last project, that wall color. I know you've wanted to do this for a long time and I'm so excited for you that you're feeling inspired to start. I agree the gold will be warm and lovely. We're right here rooting for you and we can't wait to see the progress pics!
