Cake decorating advice needed (pics)

I am not very artistically talented but I do enjoy making birthday cakes. With Nick's peanut allergy, I pretty much have to.

In the past I could doll up some plastic figurines without too much trouble:

but this year Nick is having a Star Wars party and I have no idea what to do. I have a cake topper like this (basically just a Darth Vadar mask):

That cake is okay but I really didn't want chocolate icing since it's a chocolate cake.

The napkins usually inspire me but the colors aren't jumping out at me:

The tablecloth looks like this (wow that is huge - sorry!):

So far I'm thinking maybe a sparkly blue background with a reddish border and writing or should I just keep the base white?

Little boys...I say Yoda green! With Light Sabre edging???? Add sparkles to the Yoda Green background. Of course if you could make it glow in the dark they'd love it more (then their teeth would glow, and they'd all go into the bathroom and turn off the lights!!!)

The problem I have the most with these cupcakes is the frosting tends to dehydrate and get very crusty very quickly. It still tastes great but I want it to keep the creamy texture it has when I first make it. I assume it's the Bailey's evaporating. I've done it multiple times with different proportions and it always does the same thing. It's the only frosting I've ever made that does it. The only thing I've found so far that works is making the frosting a day ahead, giving it time in the fridge to evaporate and get crusty and then rewhip it with a little heavy cream. That seems to bring it back for good. I'm also considering heating the Baileys up on very low heat to allow most of the alcohol to evaporate so I still get the flavoring without the dehydrating effect. No one else seems to have an issue with this so maybe it's just me! But these are definitely one of the favorites in my baking business.

Thanks. I did decide to make a carrot cake in the end. I bought an assorted box of Wilton's paste icing colors... I'm very happy with how vibrant they turned out. We went over there last night and I brought the cake over (on the way I stopped and got a digital camera 100 dollar Nikon at Target, not expensive buy fine for pics of food and vacuums). First we went to dinner at Kobe steakhouse (late b-day dinner for me, was nice) and then met his parents and brother back at grandma's house. His mom also brought one of her 8 birds and her english mastiff (huge drooling, but sweet dog)... that combined with the cats already there, it was a full house! I've never professed to be any good at writing in icing, but I still had fun doing it. She was very appreciative and seemed to like the cake. I used fresh ground cinnamon and added applesauce and nutmeg to the standard Joy of Baking recipe. Also made a double batch of frosting just because you can never have enough. I forgot to toast the nuts before pressing them onto the sides, but it still turned out OK. The highlight of the evening was when granny (who has dementia and cancer and all kinds of other ailments) plucked a dark walnut from the side of the cake with her bare fingers and put it in her mouth, then said, "I thought you mighta cooked a bug in the cake, but I reckon it's jist a nut!" Here's the first picture taken with the new camera. There's even a setting for food... I'm going to have to scroll through the archives and start reading those food photo tips now!

Hi, I see something maybe green tone on tone delicate and sprawling. In other words it would look like the design carries on behind the upper cabinets and shelves (all you have to do is cut and continue) and peeks out a little at the top and maybe a bit moving on to the next wall. Tone on tone will just add a little interest without looking like too much. You could have a small amount of sprig carrying on to the next wall but you may find that you would want to cut and remove some fullness of the design. You could use a white or gray decal if you wanted to be a bit bolder but it could look busy if it is not a delicate design. I love the look of your kitchen the way it is and don't think you need to do too much. Sometimes a touch of whimsy does it when you want a change. The great thing about decals is that you can change it out. If you are feeling very brave you could get the next shade darker in your wall color and paint something on. There are vids on youtube to show how to do this I think. For skinny branches it's a matter of a good little brush and turning the brush with your finger tips while dragging in order to get a good look. You could even mix some glaze with the paint for an opaque look (my fav). There are many ideas you can get off google search but I personally would keep it simple delicate and sprawling and maybe just swap out the two white dishes on your shelf for something with some contrasting color. I wouldn't change anything else because your kitchen is sooo nice the way it is.

Teal/aqua will be great in the kitchen! What you choose will depend on what you want to put out. I would start with a mat by your sink. Then perhaps a piece of art on the piece of wall to the left of the sink. It looks like that is over a peninsula, is that right? Then find some coordinating dish towels. Places like Target have beautiful kitchen items. Bring some home and return the ones that don't work. You can find stripes, plaids, solids, and florals. If you want more, you could swap some of the stainless items on your counter for more colorful versions. Take it a little at a time just to see how it looks. Different people have different tastes in the amount of pattern and color they like. Have fun!

I wouldn't sweat the background too much. They aren't going to notice once they get a look at that mask. If you want a dark background - you can always dye the icing with cake dyes. You are a good mom to care so much! He will love it.

You make your cakes like I do. My 7 yo had a cake with the Anakin/Obi Wan Kenobi volcano duel on it last year. Those little figurines are expensive.

I think yellow or orange would work instead of the chocolate frosting.

Are you familiar with Maid of Scandinavia Cake decorating? Do a google on it. Anyway I have a lot of their old magazines that could be yours just for the postage

I would do a blue background. if you have a small star cookie cutter you could use it as a template to scatter stars where the mask doesn't cover. Or do them freehand. Fill the stars in with bright yellow icing and sprinkle them with edible glitter. Wilton makes a great edible glitter. A little goes a long way and you can buy a jar at Michael's or similar stores for around 3 dollars. I sift a pinch of glitter between my fingers rather than shake from a jar.

Yes I agree the kids aren't going to care, and I would go with a blue or a Yoda green icing as well with the mask as the centrepiece, it would look awesome!
I really like your sponge bob cake, too.

Thanks for the suggestions. Still about 20 invites out there (out of 25) that I haven't heard from and the party is next Saturday so I'm having trouble getting excited about this cake or party.

I guess I'm the only one, but how about white frosting!
the mask would stand out!
you could put glow in he dark spots or stars around on the white frosting!

Great cakes! I agree with the blue icing background...I also agree that the kids will not notice or care. Have fun, and please show us your finished product.

If you use any prepared frosting/icing, check the ingrediants. Some may be used with peanut oil.
