'Portable' Mojitos....would this work?

Friday nine of us girls leave on our 16th annual girl's canoe trip. WooHoo!

I would like to have Mojitos to take down the river, but I don't want to have to mess with smashing the mint and sugar, etc.

So I was thinking. (I know, I know...)

What if I boiled up a simple syrup infused with mint, then presqueezed a bunch of limes and mixed all of that togeter in a container. Then all I would have to do is put a little of that in a glass (read: travel mug) and add some ice, rum and soda.

I can't see why that wouldn't make a tasty, no fuss Mojito, can you?

I just bought a bottle of Mojito at the liquor store. All you add is ice. This one is made with vodka instead of rum.

Why not mix EVERYTHING together, then all you have to do is pour it in a glass of ice?

Linda that sounds like a great idea. I've pre-made mojitos before, so all I'd have to do is pour. If I was planning ahead, I'd do what khandi suggests and mix in the rum, adding the ice and soda later. (Ice so it doesn't melt, and soda later so it doesn't go flat.) It sounds like a wonderful addition to your trip!

Good for you! Some great advice about just doing it. There's no stopping you. I have a job where I have oppertunities to inspire others and right now I have a duo, two men about your age helping work the grounds. They are just ready to get into anything. I'm their boss in a way and kid so much. They are like school boys and have become good freinds I beleieve challenging each other while keeping out of their wives hair had made their life so much more interesting. If you don't use it you loose it or in your case, use it and loose it.

I'm a little confused about your setup. So the drive-in broadcasts sound over the radio, and you want to use the portable radio to receive it? Then feed that to the speaker. How are you connecting the radio to the speaker? The Amazon listing gives virtually no info on its input/output options. The box says it has an 'audio line-in' jack - is this what you're using? Are you using a cable with 1/8" plugs at both ends to connect the radio to that jack? This should work as far as I can tell. Does the speaker have any kind of input selector? In other words do you have to select Bluetooth input vs. the audio line-in jack?

My AC Isn't Providing Enough Cooling. Portable air conditioners are ideal for cooling small areas, such as bedrooms or living rooms, or for providing supplemental cooling in places central AC systems can't reach. Because they're small units, the two primary reasons for inadequate cooling are incorrect sizing and extreme ambient temperatures. The size of an air conditioner refers to its cooling power, not its physical proportions. Portable ACs are sized according to their BTU ratings, and if your portable AC has the wrong BTU rating for the size of the room you're trying to cool, its efficiency will be affected. A unit with too many BUTs will cause the unit to cycle off too quickly, while a unit with too few won't be powerful enough to affect the ambient temperature. To find out whether your portable air conditioner is the right size for the room it's in, measure the length and width of the room. If your room is oddly shaped, try breaking it up into smaller shapes like squares and triangles. Calculate the area of a triangle my multiplying the base by the height and dividing in two. Once you've calculated the area, consult our portable air conditioner sizing guide to see what size air conditioner will work best in that space. If you're on the cusp of two different sizes, always choose the bigger one. It's okay to have a little more BTU than you need, just so long as it's close to the correct size. On the other hand, if the ambient temperature is too high, it can also cause insufficient cooling. As portable AC units release cool air out into the room, they vent hot air from the compressor outside. This constant venting causes a pressure imbalance that pulls in warm air from the other areas, including adjoining rooms and the outdoors. Normally, if the room is properly sealed and all the doors and windows are closed, the air coming is never enough to overwhelm the portable AC unit. If there's a leak, or if the outside temperature is extremely high, the air conditioner may not be able to generate enough cold air to cool the room. Sunlight can also heat a room faster than your portable air conditioner can cool it. If temperature keeps rising, check for leaks and close the blinds. It may be enough to swing things the other way.

not only would rolling it over... and back again be a hassle to me, then there would be the connecting and unconnecting each time - and my hands are arthritic and I have 4 trigger fingers. I'd do a dish drawer or the 18". the drawer would be the more expensive of the 2. that'd give you another 6" space to put a skinny drawer for cookie sheet, trays, cutting boards... count up how many you have (or need), stand them up next to each other and see what the width needs to be. maybe you'll need 2 of them. you could have 1 as the lower and 2 shallow drawers above it or have 2 of those drawers/pullouts for the boards, trays etc. Some taller people have put those tray type dividers in cabinets over the fridge or over a wall oven. I'd never be able to reach them. I also have limited cabinets - upper = 2 about 13" wide, 2 at about 24" wide and 1 about 15" wide (it's a dead corner cab). lower cabs - 1 at 24" wide, the sink cab, 2 about 12" wide and 2 drawer cabs about 15" wide.

We've also used Mojito mix - add club soda and rum (although I like the "from scratch" better).

I've also brought mojito's to a party - mixed at home from scratch -- just add ice and mint. I think infusing the mint with the simple syrup would be great! I may try that tonight...

I have used the simple syrup-I think it was 1.c water, 1 c. sugar and 1 C. mint steeped for about 1/2 hour, then strained. It works beautifully!!! In fact , my friends preferred it over the mashed mint & sugar. I LOVE Mojitos, but I forgot to pot up some mint this year...bwaahh.

Found my recipe;

Mint syrup

1 cup water
1 cup sugar (or splenda)
1 cup mint leaves

bring water and sugar to a boil for 2 minutes-remove from heat and add mint leaves. Allow to steep approx. 1/2 hour-45 min. Strain out the mint leaves and cool. Makes it much easier when making for a gang.

Here's my version of Mojitos. It simplifies the process so you can enjoy them anytime. I imagine it would adapt well for your trip. I don't really have quantities since I measure by eye!

Anytime Mojitos

Light Rum 750 ml
Fresh Lime Juice (about 1/3-1/2 cup)
Mint Leaves (2 cups or so)
Superfine Sugar
Lime Soda Water
Mint sprigs or lime zest curl for garnish (optional)

In a pitcher, add mint and lime juice to rum, mash and marinate in refrigerator at least 4 hours preferably overnight. Strain rum through fine sieve or cheese cloth. Fill shaker with ice, add a shot of rum, Â½ tsp. or so of super fine sugar and shake till chilled. Pour mixture into glass and top with a splash lime soda water. (Or you could add the sugar during the marinating process, skip this step and just fill a glass with ice, add the rum and top with lime soda water.) Garnish with a mint sprig.

Once strained, the rum will keep well in the refrigerator for quite a while.

NOTE: I tried simple syrup the last time I made them and according to my experts, they weren't as good.

Wow, and I thought I had originated a new way to make a cocktail! I bow down to all of you! LOL

moosemac, I think I'll try your method with half andthe simple syrup method with half. I'll try to remember to report back!

Hell, I'll just try to remember after this weekend! LOL
