MSNBC Video shows what airport body scans reveal

I just watched this video. Brian Williams and the reporter make it clear that although the scan does indeed show the subject's full body under his or her clothes, the technician views the screen in another room, and the subject's face is blurred.

This should relieve some of the privacy concerns, although it still makes me a bit squirmy.

Being that I'm hand screened every time I fly I would agree a lot of the screening process is nonsense. Steps that are SOOOO important at one airport are completely skipped at another. Some level of screening is useful to prevent weapons, etc. from going on planes but taking your shoes off and putting your liquids in a baggie is NOT preventing terrorists from getting on planes with explosives. It's a waste of time and money. In my opinion one reason we're being subjected to being searched without cause and the like is because we're far too politically correct in how we are defending this country against terrorism. The "rights" of the enemy are so important we're rendered completely ineffective in fighting the terrorist enemy. We follow the old rules of war when the war has changed entirely. We give non-citizen suspected terrorists the rights of citizens instead of handling them like they were suspected war criminals. We pussyfoot around everyone for fear of offending somebody because of their ethnicity, religion or country of origin. Meanwhile terrorists have to be laughing their butts off because they have us completely figured out and we are clueless and powerless. We're running around like a chicken with its head cutoff spending money on ineffective security measures and ever more eroding our freedoms. I think the enemy is winning big time and most people don't even recognize it.

I'm late to this discussion and I don't post too often, but what you described in your original post is how I was feeling for the longest time. From what you said, I'd say the nurse was very likely right. I had my first hip replaced on 2009 (at 54) and the other one this year (6 months ago). Here's what I was experiencing - does any of it sound familiar to you? * Pain in my thighs, especially towards the end of the day. The muscles were so sore and I could feel them twitching. * Sleeping was difficult, since I could not find a comfortable position. I even bought a new mattress, since I thought that was the problem. * There was occasional pain in my groin, best described as a knife twisted in there. :( * I lurched when I walked, and for someone who used to gracefully manage modern gymnastics, that was embarrassing. I had a physio consult and the physiotherapist told me what is so very logical, but what had not occurred to me, that a lot of the pain was due to muscles tired of trying to hold my body in a position where the pain was less. I've linked to the booklet I was given. There are some good exercises in there to do. And as for aches and pains in general. Yup, I have them. The worst is the arthritis in the base of my thumbs. @HU-738409787 I'll look further into it. But for now, maybe different mechanical sources can cause the hum. Maybe there is no single mechanical cause for all cases. I get the same sound that you and others here have described, so it is the same phenomenon. As I understand it, the theory you're talking about is that acoustic fatigue from old, natural gas pipelines is causing the Hum. Maybe that theory explains some or even many cases. But it wouldn't explain my case; it wouldn't explain why the hum is eliminated or almost eliminated when there is a strong rainstorm and the satellite signal goes out...It also wouldn't explain why there are times when the hum goes away for long periods -- sometimes many weeks or even months -- and then comes back. People don't just stop using natural gas for several weeks or months. At least we don't. I doubt that Debbie and I are the only ones who experience those long time-gaps...Another problem with the theory is: why is there very recently a major increase in hum reports, if this thread is any evidence of that? We're getting people from North America, like myself; from the UK; from Australia, etc who are reporting this in seemingly record numbers. Did the natural gas pipelines in those areas coincidentally get old at the same time and in great numbers? Unlikely it seems...Also, why is the Hum so disproportionately heavy in the Anglosphere compared to almost the entire world? The World Hum Map (which I use to be able to get on my computer) shows that. The only exceptions, if I remember right, are parts of western, continental Europe such as the Netherlands (and maybe Belgium) and parts of western Germany. (Notice the black clusters on the map.)...I'm not suggesting (or ignoring) conspiracy theories, but those questions need to be asked...Another reason that I think I have finally found my source of the humming is that it explains why I originally thought it was my neighbor's generator. The hum sound is, overall, stronger in the northwest section of the house. That neighbor is northwest of my house. But the satellite receiver is in the house's northwest section; and in the northwest section, the hum is strongest a few feet from the receiver and at an angle that is roughly perpendicular to it...HU-738409787, no disrespect. I'm just giving my 2 cents so that we can get to the truth...The satellite dish is the source of my hum, but not necessarily the cause. The cause might be something that can access different vehicles and isn't dependent on a satellite dish. So, whatever is coming through the satellite dish could also be what's causing the hum for some other people.

I don't need a TV. I'll just watch over sheilajoyce's shoulder. LOL Tonight we'll be recording Season 3 of "Luther" -- runs on BBC-America for four consecutive nights. Can't wait to see the character Alice again! The star is Idris Alba -- first known to us as the character Stringer Bell in "The Wire" (an all-time favorite series set in Baltimore). We're in and out of "Intelligence", a Canadian TV series set in Vancouver. We watch a lot of older programs on DVD's from our library. This one was made around the same time as "The Sopranos" and is equally riveting. "New Tricks" is another British series we enjoying -- must be in its' ninth season. (Retired detectives investigate cold cases.) We catch "Hawaii Five-O" for the scenery. (Known to us as the tropical cartoon.) Next up -- for this afternoon's Teatime Matinee -- is "Silks". The only network programs we watch are news and commentary -- mostly CNN and MSNBC -- and ABC for "Jeopardy" at 6 p.m. Saturdays. DH watches Da Bears (depending -- LOL).

Agreed that this is bizarre.

But really, who cares what you look like unclothed? For a lot of younger, and older people,, they are sometimes almost unclothed these days anyhow.

And the screener doesn't know the person. Probably after a while they all look alike (or may cause a few giggles.)

I can't understand why anyone would object to this.

Is the safety and security of our citizens, and our country, not worth a little discomfort?

Of course it is, Sue. I posted this only because of the conversation that took place on the subject the other day.

I don't think people are going to object; they'll just stop flying. :-)

Yep. Guess you younger ladies will be subject to removing your pads, liners and tampons to be searched by the "experts" hired by TSA. Better undiaper that baby or older adult with incontinence problems too.

This just gets better and better. Innocent people being subjected to indignity after indignity because political correctness prevents us from properly profiling.

I don't believe that profiling alone is sufficient. However if that's combined with more sophisticated technology, bomb sniffing dogs, alert passengers and TSA agents who are trained in detecting possible terrorists then our ability to detain and/or stop attacks will be enhanced.

Now I only hope the camera doesn't add 10 pounds to my image!

Really, after "suffering" the indignities of a colonoscopy, this looks like a walk in the park.

I would have no problems walking thru such a security device. JMHO

I find in strange that the media has not interviewed the passengers sitting right next to the bomber. What was he doing in the seat, what did they see, how did the ordeal play out, ect. We only heard about the passengers from a few rows back taking action.

Being screened that way wouldn't bother me. I guess most of us have 2 arms, 2 legs a main body and most even have a head on top of all that. LOL

Something I can't help wonder about is, Do artifical parts show up in the screening? If not then would it really be any help, or just a hassle.

I didn't watch the program, so maybe that was answered already.

I guess I'll be stripped down to the core as I wear a panty liner all the time. Bladder problems, I laugh, I drip! Maybe things will ease up some before I fly in September..
After having both my knees replaced that will set off alarms also!! Bummer
