House elevation/style... craftsman/farmhouse?
Comments (33)CamG, I really like he latest rendition with only one gable. I agree with using taller windows. Will you have divided lites? I think this is similar to what virgilcarter is suggesting: We used 8x8 . The columns were slightly off the ground so we put in trim pieces. I would reconsider the stone on the front of the porch. I didn't realize this needed to be specified in advance. We didn't have a brick or stone ledge so it was too late by the time I decided to put stone. Maybe just put in the stone ledge just in case you change your mind....See MoreBaseboards throughout a farmhouse style home ??
Comments (10)We need to make the same types of decisions for our baseboards and our door and window trim. A simple 1x8 was suggested for the baseboards (we will have 10' ceilings) but in addition to concerns about dust-collection I might like to incorporate a touch of elegance. The architectural style is barn/farmhouse which has a certain charm in itself but it's also quite masculine with all of the straight lines and right angles (though not as much as Craftsman). Our doors will be 2-panel with square tops, but I'm partial to French Country style and was hoping to incorporate a simple cove or roundover at the tops. The same issue presents with the doors and windows as I like the overall simplicity suggested here but I'm not sure if I want something as stark as some planks nailed to the wall. Comments (24)My father's old family home was something like the old picture. I adored exploring all the rooms and hidden attic spaces in that old house, when I was a child. I visited it a few years ago, but did not go inside - don't think I'd want to see what has happened with renters for the past 45 years (the same couple, though). My cousin bought it out of our uncle's estate - a totally impractical, sentimental gesture. The house is in MO; he lives in TX and is now in his early 90's. It will be a huge burden his surviving child one day soon. I was glad to see that most of the huge old trees were still there, and a few traces of my grandmother's garden....See MoreA Survey of Farmhouse Styles
Comments (27)And, because where you have farm houses, you have farm children, and therefore schools... Some one room schoolhouses from the same area This one has been purchases by the local hysterical, er, historical society. The plaque gives dates of establishment, when THIS building was erected, when it closed, etc. This one is the same brick style as many of the homes around it. The little "shed" entrance is a later (rather awful) addition. This one belongs to a local boy scout troop. Finally, this one was a private residence for a while. Then it was bought up by another local history group and restored pretty thoroughly:...See Morebestyears
