Sock knitters I have a ? please.........

I have a good handle on dpn's and I've got at least 30 pair under my belt just so you know I'm not a beginner on socks lol. My question is about the Magic Loop method....I'm camping again, found a nice yarn shop and I bought some sock yarn and a long long needle hehehe, I cast on and have knit about 4 inches of sock from the top down and got to wondering how I'm supposed to divide the stitches up for the heel (yeah I know I didn't buy a pattern and I don't have one with me)

This is the first time I'm trying the magic loop method so any tips would be appreciated ;0)

Do I just start back and forth on the one needle or do I need to re-arrange the stitches so that the join is centered?

I know I could never knit a pair of socks...

Matter of fact I don't even remember how to knit anymore...I like crocheting so much better.

But my feet are so tender I don't imagine I would be able to wear hand knit socks..

I think I would be able to feel them under my feet.

Or do you use fine yarn?

If I have one tiny wrinkle it cause my feet to hurt.

Zipper, you already have the stitches divided in half, right? When you have the cuff as long as you want it, just knit back and forth on the one needle, leaving the other half on the other needle, using it as a stitch holder. Email me thru here if you don't already have my email addy, and I will walk you thru turning the heel and the gussett sts. This is the only way I knit socks!

Patti, I have very sensitive feet, also. I knit my socks on size 2 needles and use a fine yarn, sock/fingering weight. I was afraid I would have a problem with them making my feet sore, also. Now, if I had more than 3 pair, that is all I would wear! Everyone else wants them!

Carla I am a believer. I will worship at your feet. you are my goddess of tomatoes. I hope you are saving some of those precious seeds for me. What can I offer you besides my undieing devotion and love for all of eternity for just a few tomato seeds. What a deal. I do not like Brandywine. Terrible tomato. What a waste. Great socks, Socks! I get mine closer to the same size by working on both socks at the same time. I start them both at the same time on different sets of needles, which helps me get them to match, also. I do a couple of inches on one, then on the other. That way, my gauge stays almost the same on each sock. When I have a ball of yarn that will make two socks, instead of needing two balls, I get out the kitchen scale and weigh it, then wind another ball out of it until I get equal balls. You may have to pull out almost a golf ball size ball until the ends match, but you can use it up at the toe if you run out on one sock. There, no one will ever know they don't match! I wear them Patti, I don't have any problems, DH really likes wearing them too and he hasn't complained either ;0)

I use sock yarn and so far no complaints from the people I've given them to. I learned to knit just a little over two years ago, but I've crocheted for over thirty years so that might have made the knitting a little easier for me to learn. ;0)

I have the worst connection I think I'll log off and check back tomorrow. Nite all!!

Zipper, just so you'll know- when you get to the heel, you're knitting the "hairy heel" and at the toe- that's the "tricky toe". My mum knits socks and that is what she calls those parts, I guess they used to give her fits. lol

She knits them for us and we wear them around the house, they're too thick to wear with shoes. And when we wear them out, she fixes 'em!

Tami's right. Most patterns use half the stitches for the heel.

I have never done the magic loop method.

I did a quick browse trying to find directions on how to divide the heel stitches, and the link here seems like it might help you.

Let me know if you like the method in general. I kind of liked working with two circulars (I made a pair of gloves that way but not socks yet).

I'm back home with hopefully a better connection now lol. Thanks everyone I appreciate the help. Tami I will send you an email in a little while. You posted a minute before I did it looks like and I logged off without coming back in to look...sigh sorry I missed it.

Flamey tell your DM I wish she could come into my living room to show me how she does her hairy heels and tricky toes lol. My DM crochets and she looks at me like I've suddenly grown two heads if I even try to get her to help me learn this stuff lol.

Thanks Donna, I had that part figured out but I didn't know if I needed to re-arrange the stitches so that my join was in the middle of the heel stitches or just to one side like they are now, I use the join as a reference spot when I turn the heels on DPN's.

Thank you too Dances, I think I might like this method it's a little bit awkward at first making sure you have the working yarn in the right position when you turn to knit the other side I'm hoping Tami has some advice to make this a bit easier lol.

Sorry, Zipper. Guess I didn't read your question well enough.

Magic Loop is very awkward for me. I can use DPNs, but I really like 2 circs.
