Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

While I've never been one to preach that every space must have a "focal point," some of the brilliant light fixtures that have been popping up around Houzz may make me change my tune. Committing to a light fixture can be tough, and you really should wait until one truly knocks your socks off. Right now I'm here to try and knock them off. Do any of these strike your fancy or is your favorite already hanging in your home? If it's the latter, please share a picture in the comments section!
These rusty crusty light fixtures where fashioned from old propane tanks. The result adds an industrial element to this crisp black and white kitchen.
Capiz shell fixtures once broke the bank, but now inexpensive versions are widely available. West Elm has a reasonably priced version here.
This light serves as a modern sculptural piece in an otherwise traditionally decorated room.
This image has been one of the most popular on Houzz for quite awhile. I'm betting this light fixture deserves a lot of the credit for that.
One of my biggest regrets in life was not picking up a Fortuny light fixture in Venice when the dollar was riding high over the lira!
The Nelson Pendant Light floats and glows in an otherworldly way!
The Caboche Chandelier has become a contemporary classic, and goes with everything from glam bathrooms to starkly minimal dining rooms.
This lovely lavender light lets visitors know a lot about the person who lives here from the moment they poke their heads into the entryway!
For a great guide to choosing the right sized light for a dining room, look at this ideabook from Lettered Cottage.
Lots of my favorite sculptural lights seem to take their inspiration from whimsical sea creatures. This is one of them.
This Robert Allen light has been compared to a sea anemone.
This light fixture is pure magic.
Take a look at how different it looks from another angle.
For some reason, this one reminds me of some sort of robotic creature straight out of The Matrix.
I featured this home in a Houzz Tour yesterday, and I cannot get this Bubbles Glass Chandelier by Solaria Home out of my mind. It's definitely one to save your pennies for if you have the right spot for it!
Cascading bubbles add major drama to the dining room. This fixture is also great for a tall foyer or staircase.
The Random Light stands up well on its own, in pairs, in threes, or in an even larger group.
This oversized circular chandelier is by Ochre.
I use this fixture in ideabooks all the time - it always pops into my head when I am thinking about great lighting.
These are Dandelion Pendant Lamps from Moooi are definitely the stars of this kitchen.

thank you!
i'll try to give you the short story... during an extensive renovation to my brooklyn home 2 years ago i did a very thorough search for a fixture that was contemporary yet worked in a brownstone built in 1899. in the end i bought various sized vintage glass globes on ebay and designed the fixture along with 2 others and had them manufactured. since then i have made several other one of a kind pieces and am in the process of trying to seal a deal with ABC Home to sell them. i currently have 3 pieces on display and for sale at Butter/Eva Gentry on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn.
Do you have any thoughts on where else they should be?
thanks for your comment!
