Question for sock knitters

I'm working on a pair of socks, probably my 4th pair, but I still consider myself a beginner. I posted earlier about switching to metal needles, but I stayed with the bamboo and it's going fine. Two questions:

1. I've read about some sock reinforcing yarn that can be knit into a certain part of the sock (heel? bottom?) to strengthen it. Does anyone here use it?

I couldn't find any online. Does it have a certain name other than sock reinforcing yarn?

2. I read that to round off toe corners you can work the last 2 or 3 decrease rounds without a plain round in between. The foot has to be made a few rows longer before beginning toe decreases. Has anyone tried this?

Susan
