Not a bad answer. I have tried it both ways and saw little difference. By cutting a large or medium potato in two pieces (have at least two eyes per piece, dip the cut face in wood ash to prevent rot), you get two plants, but some halves will rot anyway and not produce, and the rest will make smaller plants. Eventually, when going to the health food store to buy my seed, I would pick only the small potatoes from the bin. No cutting, no rotting, and more seed per pound. Given the OP high pH, he would be well advised to try wood chips or sawdust as a mulch, specifically for potatoes (answer to parallel thread). They like the organic matter, they need the mulch and the acid, and in my experience they do not mind the coarse chunks surrounding them. Long term, the soil's tilth will improve. Granted, initial productivity will not be optimal, but if you don't make your soil better it will never be. I have grown potatoes many times under wood chips and under a pile of organic refuse from the garden (basically, last year's cabbage stumps, radicchio roots, etc, all raked to one spot). I think they grow best with a mixture of chips and other (greener) matter, at least at my site, and I can not explain why, but under a potato canopy composting greatly speeds up (possibly it is the earthworms). Collard stumps disappear in one season. Give them a bit of P and a bit of N.

Geese can see in the dark so it will not help to try and catch them at night. Chickens on the other hand are easy to catch in the dark they have limited night vision. Many a night I have heard geese flying south even on moonless nights. I do not worry about feeding my geese greens in the winter. They have huge stores of fat . I feed them game bird crumbles and cracked corn in the winter. The geese help themselves to hay the goat drops and I hand them a couple slices of old bread every morning with their hot water. The geese love hot water in the winter they stand in it and bathe in it and drink tons of it. I give it to them as hot as I can . It doesn't seem to bother them at all.

hi. I understand. I just retired at 57 and am really enjoying my basic yard in an average subdivision in Vancouver wa. kids are grown. when one of them made me a grandpa I let them rent my home and after living in a studio rental for a year ive moved back home and bought a huge rv and have it plumbed and wired and in back "yard". i used to really enjoy lawn and garden but lost all interest about 7 years ago and everything went to hell. haha so i have entire front lawn, much to the amusement of my neighbors grass free and am loving growing annuals, veggies and flowers. now i am almost to the point of planting 2000 feet in lawn in back and next spring will garden in the area not in lawn back there too. how old your kids? do they get to go to school where you wanted? i hope i didn't come across wrong and apparently i didn't but man you got lots of work no matter what you do don't you? lol. i used to love yard work so much that in addition to working at port of Vancouver for 35 years, i bought a lawn aerator and did yard work for others on the side. probably didn't make a nickel looking back on it. i bring that up because i never used a verticutter (?) as you said you might to reseed. i always wonders how they worked. when someone wanted a complete lawn makeover , and they were never as huge as yours is, i always rounded their lawn up, thatched, aerated and then reseeded and top-dressed with some grass mulch stuff they sell in bales around here. its a by product of the huge Oregon grassed industry and is seed free and i wither dispersed by hand or rented a caged roller thing that worked great for that. im really interested in what you do. so when you get a minute down the road email me and send pics if you like. im keith dahl kgd1956@gmail.com thanks for getting back. oh by the way, here we are having one of the driest July's on record. no measurable rain since June, with no end in sight. im a heat wimp anymore so i get my stuff done in the morning and enjoy the AC in the RV as i please. life's good. im divorced so i don't have a "honey do" list. my neighbor dude says i have a "homie-do" list haha pic of grand daughter sleeping on me. im pretty crazy about her. :-)

Every day, take a look around and ask yourself the question, What ONE THING would make the biggest difference? Then do it (or have kiddos do it). Then, go on to the next biggest thing. For me, it's always 1) declutter/put things away (everyone in the family should do this, except the 8 month old); 2) clean the floor; 3) clean any shiny reflective surfaces that are dirty. In the kitchen, I think the FlyLady is right on with the clean sink. I have a rule that dirty dishes should NEVER be left in the sink, and clean dishes should NEVER be left in the dishwasher. Everything in the kitchen should be cleaned right after it is dirtied, otherwise it takes 10X as long, plus I hate to think about the proliferating bacteria in the place where we prep and eat our food. Invest in tools and cleaning products that save time and/or make cleaning easier. My favorites: microfiber cloths (should almost always replace rags, sponges, etc) -- lots of them. I have about 60, just keep pulling them out till I have a decent size load to wash. Mr Clean Magic Eraser - for tough jobs microfiber mop with LOTS of replacement heads Swiffer Vac to do the kitchen and entryway every day. Much faster and more effective than broom, much faster than getting out the canister vac, so it's worth it even though the battery only lasts a year or two. Might even upgrade to Dyson, Hoover Linx, or Roomba for frequent floor cleaning. Swiffer dusters. They really are the fastest, easiest tool for grabbing dust, and get into really tight small places so nicely. I always try to find washable/reusable rather than disposable cleaning products, but this is a disposable that is just faster AND locks up the dust better than any of my other dusting tools (I have feather, wool, and various microfiber). I'm allergic to dust, and children develop allergy more easily in a dusty environment, so it is worth it to me to buy these dusters and throw the dust away. I can whip around a room and lock up most of the dust far faster than with other dusting tools. Look for "sticking points" or annoyances in your cleaning routine and look for products or tools to make those things faster and easier.
