I was going through all my old emails that accumulated while we were away on vacation and came across the following in a CS email. Of COURSE these come to my inbox about 2 weeks after I replaced my huge bucket of CS. Oh well, it's nice to share!

I'll try to do with the stubble that remains as trowelgal suggested, don't have paving stones but some bricks or glass blocks over cardboard might do along with plenty of leaves I have. I hate to buy new, too, but maintaining plants over the winter is getting to be a chore, still don't want to give it up. I grew Salvia Sangria from T&M from seeds a few years back, started too early in my sr, got crooked. So I tied them to little stakes. When I set them out, they straightened up, are interesting plants, and that was the only one of my flowers I saw a pair of hummingbirds go for. My neighbor tells me he had scads of them on his hisbiscus on his deck. The following year I tried a mix Salvia Salsa and added a purple. Those didn't do so well in back. Neither did the Blue Ribbon (looked pretty blue in the photo but more purple) ones I planted where I had had the Sangria the year before. They were disappointing. All annuals. I don't think I have any perennial ones although there are some for my zone. Burpee has what looks to be a beautiful Cathedral Mix, but they're pricey and you only get three plants, so I passed on those. Would love to try some of those from seeds though if they ever become available or may splurge next year if I don't have to buy more of the black and white. Thanks for posting the photos, enjoyed them. They never appealed to me but have grown on me.

Hi wellspring! It's a shame we're not neighbors. I primarily grow things for fragrance and I could share plants with you. :) The fragrant forum is my favorite though this year I've become obsessed with plumerias so now I lurk on that forum quite a bit. Laugh. I saw your Charles Grimaldi (we call him Chuck) post and just had to comment. I've grown brugs for years and so far Chuck is my fav for scent. I'm so glad yours finally bloomed for you. This year I tried New Orleans Lady and it just bloomed for me as well. The scent is similar to Charles Grimaldi however it's a higher, sweeter, slightly harsher note to my nose than Chuck. I also have tons of blooms on my Betty Marshall brug. She has a spicer note than Chuck but you might also enjoy her. I think your idea of keeping Charles in the garage off the ground and wrapped should work though as Rubby suggested cuttings are always a good idea. They root readily in water. Speaking of roots I also root prune Charles every spring and if you pot up some of the fat roots they too will sprout shoots to give you new plants. If you ever want to know about other fragrant plants like jasmines, brunfelsias, hoyas, Chinese Perfume Plants, sweet olives, etc. just ask. I'd be happy to share my knowledge. :) -Robert

I get them only rarely. When I feel one coming on, I push my heel down and my toes up (towards the top of my body) and sometimes that will keep it from cramping. I think the bar of soap thing sounds interesting. I'd never heard of it before, so did google it. My thought is that it's cheap, easy, and can't do any harm. So, why not try it! Or at least, I think I will, if leg cramps ever become a problem for me. For those who want to increase the amount of potassium in their diets, bananas are just one source. My mom was on a high-potassium diet at one time (because she had a deficiency) and there are a lot of other foods rich in potassium. I've put a link to a list below. For those who are thinking about Vitamin D - my doctor says that Vitamin D is not just a vitamin but a hormone and that it is very necessary to the body (bone health, protects against breast cancer, antioxidant, etc), and that there is practically no way that those of us in the northern locations can get enough vitamin D from the sun. She had me on a high dose of Vitamin D until my levels increased to an acceptable level (confirmed by lab test) and then lowered my dose to a normal level which I am now on for maintenance.
