Deep Fryer Advice

I'm tempted to get a deep fryer, but have some qualms about it.

I would expect to use it primarily for fried seafood, french fries and tempura. I would not cook large quantities on any occasion.

The qualms I have are that it might create a messy maintenance chore and that it might be wasteful of oil. How much work is involved in filtering and storing oil and in cleaning the fryer? Can a reasonable amount of reuse be gotten out of the oil?

What else should I know about deep fryers? Can you recommend a make and model?
