Electric Deep Fryer

I picked up a used one that needs a lot of cleaning. The outside cleaned up nicely and so did the bottom of the oil pan. However there is a very thick layer of baked on oil for about the top 3 inches. Any suggestions on how to remove this? Would baking soda , hot water and a lot of elbow grease help?

It appears that it has been an expensive model but I don't want to use it like it is.

make a paste of powdered dish washer cleaner that you use in a dishwasher it has a lot of enzymes in it, add it on as a paste (mix it with some water) and leave it on there for a little bit then use a scrubber sponge and a little water and try scrubbing it.

I use a product called greased lightening also that is for removing grease, get it at grocery and even dollar store

vinegar and water is also a good cleaner that cuts oils and grease.

I 2nd the opinion of using Greased Lightening. My son used to work in a deli where they fried foods. They used either that or other products (degreasers) from the dollar store. Spray it on and let it sit for 20-30 minutes (reapplying to keep the surface moist). Perhaps then gently using an SOS pad will help make the grease go away!

Be aware that all of these 110v deep-fryers are suitable for only small batches at a time. The small quantity oil, the terrific heat loss upon immersion, and the inability of 110v to keep the oil temp where it needs to be are problems with all of them. Also be aware that any deep-fryer puts a lot of oil into the air which will soon coat anything and everything close to it. You'll want to position it under a good vent.

Found the information sheet for FoodSaver Universal Lids and thought it might be helpful. -Grainlady 1. Place your FoodSaver machine on a flat, dry surface and plug the power cord into a standard electric outlet. 2. The universal lid is labeled "Open," "Vacuum," and "Closed." Turn the knob on the universal lid so the arrow points to "Vacuum." 3. Place the UL on the top of the open container. 4. Insert one end of the accessory hose into the accessory port on your FoodSaver machine. 5. Insert the other end of the accessory hose into the hole on the top of the UL. 6. Follow the steps for vacuum packaging as outlined in your User Manual. 7. Turn the knob on the UL so the arrow points to "Closed." How to Open the FoodSaver UL: To open the FoodSaver UL, turn the knob so the arrow points to "Open." You should now be able to remove the UL from the container. Care and Cleaning Instructions: 1. All FoodSaver accessories should be washed in warm water using a mild dishwashing soap. 2. Dry thoroughly before using. Troubleshooting: 1. Make sure that the rim of the container is smooth and flat. Ragged edges will prevent a vacuum from forming. 2. Make sure the rubber gasket underneath the UL and the rim of the container are free from food materials, crumbs, etc. 3. Make sure the knob on the UL is closing and opening properly and that there are no food materials caught inside.

Although all-purpose flour has commonly been used for making raised yeast doughnuts I suggest bread flour. But when it comes to cake doughnuts (leavened with baking powder), you want lower-gluten flour, so try them with cake flour. I like to make mine with low-gluten spelt flour. Keep mixing to a minimum so you don't get a lot of gluten development. Deep frying hints: -Temperature of the fat, the temperature of the food, the amount of fat in the fryer, and the amount of food are an all-important mixture to be considered. -When the food is fried at a high temperature, the item browns quickly and needs to be taken out of the fat before it runs out of moisture. When it runs out of moisture, it begins to soak up fat and get greasy. -The shorter the frying time, the less fat is absorbed. -You need enough fat in the fryer to maintain the temperature when the food is added. If too much cold food is added, the temperature will drop. So don't overload your fryer. -Use a fat with a smoke point much higher than the frying temperature. -Old helpful hint - Add 1 T. vinegar or 1 t. ginger to oil before heating. This prevents the dough from absorbing too much grease while frying. -Something interesting to do with the doughnut holes: (source: Recipes from the Old Mill) Doughnut Hole Sticky Muffins (make with raised dough) Grease 12 muffin cups. In the bottom of each cup place 1 T. brown sugar, 1 t. light corn syrup, 1/2 t. water, and 1 t. chopped nuts. Arrange 4 doughnut holes in each cup. Cover with plastic wrap (or a cloth) and let rise until double. Bake at 350-degrees F for about 20-25 minutes. Carefully invert pan as soon as they come out of the oven on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. -You can also bake raised doughnuts. Cut the dough with a doughnut cutter that has a large hole. Place on a greased cookie sheet and let raise until light. Bake at 375-degrees F for about 12-15 minutes. Oh, that Paula Dean....she must have her money tied up in "oil" LOL This is about in the category of deep fried Twinkies or Snickers bars. I have cooked fresh ham but I roasted it and it makes a wonderful and large pork roast, but they are so large, at least the ones I've seen, it would take a long time to fry it to get it done all the way to the bone. Another good product is the Dawn Power Dissolver. I used it on my corning topped stove along with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Let it sit a bit before scrubbing it.

Yes to the Dawn Power Dissolver, too! I couldn't remember what is was called, and was too lazy to get up when I was posting earlier! It works great, too. I think it is typically a bit more expensive and smells a bit more. However, it is a great cleaner.

I keep my deep fat fryer clean by cooling it, pouring out the oil (into a container, for re-use). Then I fill it to within 2 inches of the top with water, dump in about 2-3 Tablespoons of dishwasher detergent. Plug it in, but keep an eye on it. As soon as it begins to boil,it will create a huge amount of foam. Pull the plug just before it foams up, while you can see a few boiling bubbles. Then dump it out and wipe the inside very well with paper towels. Fill again with cool water, dump and dry with more paper towels. I have also been known to use a Brillo pad on the inside, but be careful not to burn yourself. Good luck! I enjoy my French Fries and fried breaded fish, even tho I know they are not healthy for me.

I'd saturate a few layers of paper towels or even newspaper with ammonia then place them in contact with the baked on oil. A lid should help keep them in place around the edge. Then put the whole thing into a big plastic bag, seal and put aside for a day or more.

The thicker the buildup the easier it seems to come off. Thick just peels off! I've done this a lot with inherited pots and baking pans. Love the memories as I use them but could really do without the years of buildup.

I second the ammonia trick. I have used it many times. I don't think you would even need to use the soaked paper towels. Just put about 4-5 table spoons of ammonia in the pan and place the pan inside a plastic bag like a trash bag. Seal it up with a knot or bread tie and leave over night. It seems to work off the fumes of the ammonia. It will definately make the crust come off with little effort.

Awesome! is a very good de-greaser also. I find it at the Dollar stores and WalMart also carries it. It is very inexpensive and really does a great job on grease.
