Are you willing to change out the ottoman? If not, then I would say no, not enough room.

Can you show us photos of the entire room? (and maybe some more of that gorgeous dog too!)

I would consider moving the ottoman, however, not sure my DH is ready to part with it (I never wanted it in the first place in our old house- always felt it was too massive for the couch then and this couch)

This doesn't answer your question, but if you ever decide to do a bit of remodelling ... that would have been the prefect spot for pocket french doors. We had 2 sets of double pocket french doors in our previous house and they were great.

Oh, I LOVE your dog!!! Do you want extra seating for conversation entertaining, or tv watching?

For conversation, I think a chair on the corner of the rug near the dog bed would work well. If you got a swivel chair, it could actually be used for tv too.

Another idea is to put casters on your leather ottoman, which would make it easy to wheel into a spot for extra seating for entertaining. I also think you could make at least one comfy seating area on the bench to the side of the fireplace. Looking at the fireplace, on the left: If you put a tall, not-too-deep bookshelf in either ebony or white (with a painted back wall would be awesome) on the wall there, and put some of your frames on that, then put a cushion and pillows on the bench there, it would be a nice little nook....

Couple of more thoughts:
I think you could put a hardwood chair (not upholstered) in the corner to the left of the french doors -not on the door wall, but on the short wall. This would give you something to pull up for entertaining. I'm also wondering if you could switch the orientation of the sectional so that the back was parallel to the french doors. It seems that would easily give you room for a nice chair on the opposite side of the room then.

All you need is some artwork on the two walls flaking the door for the space to look finished. If you want additional seating for comfort, then you'd want to lock shut the door nearest the fireplace and only use the door nearest the kitchen. Then you'd have room for a small scale chair there and maybe a small table beside it. You also have room for a demilune type table between the door and the kitchen, but I don't think that would fit your style.

Another thought is to eliminate the built-in to the left of the fireplace and place a desk there with a chair that can do double duty. You wouldn't need to lose half of the active door that way.

i agree about adding a chair at corner of the rug toward dog bed... and keeping the R door locked makes perfect sense! but an upper latch for it if you don't currently have one...
i don't think you have room for a pair of chairs tho...

I don't think club chairs will fit in front of those doors, even with the ottoman gone. Because of the door swing, I think club chairs would block the walkway in that space and make it awkward to maneuver.

I think you could probably fit two larger dining room chairs there, side-by-side (close enough to put feet up on ottoman.... and with enough room for a tiny end table between them...) Do you have any dining chairs to put in there to see how they fit? If not, maybe use your kitchen stools. When I say dining chairs, I mean a couple chairs that aren't deep and are mostly upright...... they can still be upholstered and look appropriate in a living room, though.

I agree that you could also put a small chair (a small club chair) to the left of the fireplace. You could also put large dining chairs on either side of the fireplace....

Do the French doors need to open and close? I ask because I have them in my living room, which is tiny, and I struggled with seating arrangement for the longest time trying to leave space for them to open and close. One day I realized that they do not need to close, so I leave them open and furniture is in front of them, which prevents them from operating, but they still add architectural interest when they're flush against the wall and I can have reasonable seating in the room. Just throwing it out there in case it helps you come to a decision one way or the other.

Are you needing more seating or just feel you want something opposite the sofa? I like the two upholstered ottomans in the pic above, but would think a long bench would also work.

I think Skyla wants her bed in front of the fireplace.....a swinging door would make even me nervous! ;~)

I'm looking for both extra seating & thinking about filling the space..
The doors do need to be closed at certain times of day ONLY b/c Skyla has decided to destroy our brand new sectional (we purchased in Sept) while we are away. She is 10 and had never done anything like that before- Vet thinks as she gets older it is either senility, something spooks her when we aren't home or separation anxiety. So during the day we have to block off the room. Up until about 2 months ago the doors stayed open all the time.
I do plan on making the built -ins window seats eventually. I do like the idea of placing a smaller bookcase flanking that wall to the left of the fire place.
When the door is open, Skyla loves her little nook- she likes tight spaces (we have learned in the past few weeks) but you are right when the door is open she doesn't touch her bed! We will probably move it elsewhere
I will def, try some of your ideas and let you know how they work out. trial and error I suppose!

Is there are reason why you can't have the sectional facing the windows with its back to those french doors? That would leave room for a chair on the window wall without worrying about the door swing? From the picture it looks as if both arrangements work for TV viewing. So why not just switch the sectional?

Do the french doors open all the way flat against the wall? If so, I think one chair where the dog bed currently is (sorry Skyla)will fill the space. I do agree with keeping the right side door closed for most days, but when you need to open both doors, just move the chair temporarily while you position the door. Does that make sense? I also encourage you to install cushions on the window seats. That's valuable real estate that you need to take advantage of. It will really warm up the look. Pretty room, but even a more beautiful dog :)

Think about getting Skyla a crate to be in when you are gone. Most dogs who are crate trained actually prefer them to a dog bed in the open and will voluntarily choose to enter their crates even with the doors left open. They like the "cave" effect. That would solve one issue with the doors needing to be operative and make Skyla secured and happy at the same time.

I would rotate the seating so the back of one part of the sectional is to the doors. That should give you room to add at least one chair by the wall where the sectional is now.

The other thing to consider is instead of chairs, a wonderful bench to go against that wall. Adds extra seating without as much bulk.

Or, could you rehang the doors so they swing into the playroom?

Well I'm no handyman, so I'm just asking, can the doors be maneuvered/rehung to swing out into the other room instead of into the family room? And if it could be done, would that mess up the traffic flow in the adjoining room? It sure would free up a lot of valuable space in your family room.

If you could, you would be able to fit some additional seating in the room.

I second ratherbesewing's suggestion to put some nice cushions on the window seats--adds extra seating and will look great finished off like that. Then put the beautiful large pottery there down on the hearth on the right side. I like the other suggestions, too--both rehanging the door and keeping one side closed or have them both open all the way. Also second the idea to at least tape the floor to show how the sectional would fit if swapped to face the windows. With at least one of these done, it looks like a chair would fit in there.

Thanks for all the additional suggestions- Unfortunately, the doors mounting on the other side of the wall won't work either- There is a light switch on one of the walls, and the other will soon be a built int book case once the playroom moves to our basement.

As far as the couch= I don't think it would be a good idea to move it as it will block the flow from the kitchen/eating area into the family room. But it's not completely out of the question. Kind of playing with it in my mind. I will eventually get cushions for the window seats. I suppose that will have to do to fulfill my extra seating desire.

Gosh the french doors were an after thought. When we built the house 2 years ago, we said, wouldn't it be great to have them and so being the impulsive people we were (not so much now) we had them installed. Now i wish I had not installed them as they seem to be causing more of an issue than not!

Like the poster who advised the pocket doors (but hard to retrofit), you could consider changing your current french doors to sliding barn doors simply with a track suspended on the wall. It looks like you have room on either side? That would cut the swing room, and give you more floor space for furniture.

Have you thought of putting cushions on the benches underneath the windows and making that your extra seating?

Do you really have to be able to open both french doors? Make the one in front of the dog bed stationary (keep it closed/locked) and you can easily put a chair in front of it.

Lovely home...I too, would re-orient the sectional & add window seat cushions. This would already give you extra seating and then you absolutely could add a chair or 2 and even a small table. If you don't want to re-orient, I still think you can sneak in a small chair.

I am looking to add a couple of smaller chairs to my living room after purchasing a sofa and matching recliner. I didn't really see anything in the local furniture stores but wandered if anyone had advice on where to purchase some. I want a small proportion chair but comfortable.
