Here I go again, coming up with strange ways of doing things.

In the Mango thread, mango leather was mentioned.

Speaking of Mangos, ---- pineapples, strawberries, cantaloupes, peaches ---everything is in season, soon you will be overwhelmed with tomatoes.

Yes! Make leather!

Let me share with you my way of making fruit leather.

1. From a craft store you can buy 1/4" x 1/4" wood sticks.

2. Miter the corners and glue into a wood frame.

3. Using Scotch Tape to stretch supermarket veggie plastic bags on the frame.

4. Pour fruit puree on the plastic and dehydrate.

5. There is no need for oil on the plastic, Fruit leather will not stick to the plastic. It peels off very easily.

6. If you set your dehydrator at the highest temperature and run it longer, you will get crispy fruit chips, crispy just like potato chips.

Speaking of "Snack Addiction", crispy fruit chips are my addiction.

Speaking of "Grammy's In Trouble", crispy fruit chips are popular with children.

You can get fancy and box them for wonderful gifts.

I feel terrible that I missplled the man's name. Its Cory not Cori. The place was great and well worth the 1.75 hour drive (one way). There was no deer fence. Robert (the owner) did say that he sprayed with liquid fence and in the fall would thin the herd a little on his own. You can see his deer blind in the 2nd picture near the middle, off in the distance and his bait station at about 3 o'clock in the photo. I asked him about seeds and he says he rarely has seeds because the deer always get to the scapes first. He did have two originals. I'm regretting not picking one up while I was there. I absolutely loved the fallen tree with the Junes planted in it. What a cool place to put hosta.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments. Hosta flower buds are very tender and delicious. The flower itself does not have much taste, just for looks. Cauliflower grilled, as you know, really delicious. I am having fun with cutting beets as thin as paper using a single-bevel knife. Much thinner than a mandolin can slice. Jasdip, sous vide can cook meat from raw to very well done, and anywhere in between, without fail, precisely every time. That's the whole idea. You just set the temperature and walk away. Timing is not that critical. There is no skill involved. dcarch

prill... I really am contemplating using IKEA boxes and DH will build the door fronts. The only doors I will have are at the sink base and corner. I'm planning on uppers only the long 10' west wall where the window is. I think I want SS and glass there; kinda like the horizontal IKEA ones (if not those exactly); but I'll play that by ear. The style will be a very wide rail/style shaker like this: That is the Ultracraft door that I first fell in love with in the red birch. I think it's gorgeous but I'm just not seeing the reddish tone in my kitchen with the bakers table and floor. What do you all think? wolfgang, thanks for the compliment. Those trees are Latanya palms. (not sure if I spelled it correctly) When the really mature, they'll form a canopy over the pool. OH... and about wood cabs. I also adore walnut and teak but wonder if it would be too dark or if the teak would be too "streaky" with the floor.

I'd definitely agree about glass giving your space a more modern direction. I'm thinking black glass would also be very 'hard' visually -- another surface with a 'strong, masculine' bent. Is that something you want? What direction DO you want to go in? (If it were me, I'd tip just a bit back to the 'softer and more feminine side' with a ceramic tile with a bit of a 'cushion' shape (handmade) and a color that's rich but not too dark. I'm thinking a simple 4x4 on a diagonal layout with a frame treatment over the range... While I love the metal decos, I think they may add too much 'clutter' to an element that needs to be more 'background'. You've also got a lot of outlets in your splash -- so there will already be things there -- things you probably don't want to draw the eye to...

This all looks delicious. My favorite is still the apricot leather from the middle eastern grocery store - very thick, sweet/sour, chewy and apricoty. It's hard on your fillings though. I made pear leather last year from the abundance of my mom's trees. Yummy!

Last night we dined at a new gastropub-bar from the hit chef of Unami Burger. His burger contained Ketchup Leather. I have to admit, it was a richer and less gooey addition to the complete burger experience.

dcarch - you've blown me away as usual. Two questions; picture 6 - how did you do the embossing and picture 7 - what are the red flakes, because I'm thinking that an apricot/peach/hot pepper leather would be really cool...

Ideas, OTOH, get stale if you don't share, and the more your share, the more ideas will come to you.

That is a pretty much brainless and skill-less, yet fun, idea. Find a carved pattern that you like, get some food-grade silicone molding rubber (eBay, Amazon), which is a two part liquid and pour over the mold. In a day, you will have a mold which you can use to make all kinds of food. Because it is silicone, it can be used to bake bread, make meat loaf, make candies, ---. Because it is silicone, nothing sticks to it. Because it is silicone, it will last forever.

I make multi-colored fruit leather to make it more interesting looking and more interesting taste. Basically two different colored fruit purees. After you pour the main fruit puree, say mango, on the dehydrating tray, you just squirt the other colored fruit puree, say kiwi, on it.

More leather ideas:

1. Use very very thin puree, you can make extremely delicate fruit films. They make wonderful garnishes for your desserts.

2. The stores here sell marked-down fruits which are bruised, but not rotten, one dollar gets you a big bag. Great for making fruit leather.

3. Dehydrating at 150F for many hours kills many germs.
