Sweet potatoes? Where??

I just read a thread in which posters talked about baking sweet potatoes. I live in the metro DC area and cannot find sweet potatoes - haven't seen the real deal in two years. All they sell around here (Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter, Wegman's, Bloom & even Whole Foods) are big yams & they are awful. I wrote letters last winter to all these supermarkets complaining about the lack of real sweet potatoes. They all denied not having them. They said the name "yam" and "sweet potato" are interchangeable. I don't think so! I tried to make a sweet potato casserole last week using these yams and it was awful. The texture is dry, sticky, stringy. I bought one of those individually wrapped "sweet potatoes" at Giant a year ago and nuked it. It tasted almost like the sweet potatoes I remember. But it was expen$ive. What the heck is going on here? We used to be able to buy sweet potatoes at any supermarket. And, aren't yams different genetically from sweet potatoes? Thanks :>)
