load size... for mc58....

I was thinking about your load sizes while doing my laundry today... I'm thinking your tangling is related to not enough clothes in a load... I rarely ever have tangling... while I have a 'different' machine (bosch 500), our machines are very similar in capacity and design...

this is a 'typical' load for me... (I counted pieces in an actual load today)...

9 pairs athletic socks (calf length)

13 pairs older girls undies

2 long nite gowns

7 womens undies

16 mens t-shirts

1 girls bathing suit

7 large boys t-shirts

1 hooded sweatshirt

1 regular sweatshirt

1 pair cotton gym shorts

1 pair large boys wind/gym pants

This pretty well filled up the entire drum when dry, but compacted to be ~ 1/2 full or less when wet...

I've got a towel load in now... it has...

5 oversized bath sheets (larger than 'beach' towels)

3 bath size towels

6 kitchen tea towels

3 kitchen dish towels

3 face/wash cloths

this is a little on the small size for a towel load for me... but I had too many towels for 2 loads, so I divided them into 3 this week.... too many pool towels... a different topic!

Anyway, like I said, the size of these loads is pretty typical for me... and even the load that had 4 pair adult jeans and other assorted shorts, dresses, and t-shirts/tops did not have tangling... some individual pieces may be somewhat twisted themselves, but those I shake out prior to tossing into the dryer...

I'm thinking that your clothes have too much room to twist and fall around in... thus your tangling problems...

Just a guess....

I thought the Bosch had special Archie paddles that help move the clothes around pushing them towards the front so that they don't bunch up in the rear? Maybe I am dreaming that.

IIRC those 'special' padles were designed to drop/spray water down on the clothes, they have holes down the length of them... I don't recall those on the other brands... ????

I would never "build in" cabinets around a W/D for a couple of reasons. In 5 years there could be some kind of new design that would require tearing everything out to accommodate the new machines. For resale it's better to have an open area that can house any kind of machine - top loading or front loading with or without pedestals. Washers and dryers seem to not last very long nowadays, many people replace their machines every few years now.

TMI What is your location? I see you are in Allentown, Pa. Everything points to a 2.5 ton system but with full cooling BTUs. If you go up in size to a 3 ton, it is quite probable that modifications to your ductwork system will be required to handle the extra CFMs. How many returns do you have and how do you filter your return air? The obvious question is since you are replacing a 2 1/2 ton system, how did it perform especially in cooling? What size heat strip do you have now? Here is a suggested Trane system you might consider looking at. I have had front loaders for about 13 years now, and as soon as my new house is completed in a couple of months I am going back to a top loader. If I can purchase a satisfactory "modern" top loader...great. otherwise I will look for an older used one in good shape. My Duets will go in the barn for quilts or throw rugs until they finally die. I have hard water and use minimal detergent. While the Duets are nice for washing large blankets and quilts, I feel they do a lousy job rinsing things like towels. There just isn't enough water to do the job. Towels soak up the minimal water, and there just isn't enough to do a good rinse job. At first glance when using a heavy duty or sanitary wash cycle the laundry appears to be well rinsed. However, if they are re-washed with no detergent on a bulky items cycle, which fills the washer with more water, there are tons of suds left in the drain/rubber boot area. Sometimes it takes another bulky item cycle to get all the suds out. It doesn't matter what He detergent it is, and scaling down the amount lower than the lowest stated useage amount makes for dingy towels. I was also getting itchy skin from my jeans, so I put those through extra cycles with no soap as well. No more itchy skin. I use unscented detergents such as Ecos and Seventh Generation because Tide and such would just tear me up, and was absolutely horrible rinsing out. I am all for water conservation, but having to run multiple cycles in no way saves money or resources. In my opinion, these washers do not use enough water and the government has no business dictating what water levels my dishwasher and washing machine use, or what lightbulbs I purchase for that matter. Consumers have the ability to control the quality and conservation issues with how they spend their dollars, and I already have a mother and father. I'm going to look into tweaking the water levels.

Thank you for the replies. My laundry sizes vary. I have 5 people in my home. Some of them actually do loads according to color, some just take the weeks worth of clothes and do one load lol. I have 4 Queen size beds and one king size bed. We have animals so all bedding is done once a week to cut down on the hair building up on our comforters. I wash a lot of rugs. I do my rugs in front of the doors and in the bathrooms once a week. They are really hard on a top loader but with the new larger capacity front loader I am hoping to be able to comfortably wash the rugs as well. I live in Florida and between summer rains and sand the rugs are dirty in no time. Before I moved here I had a Whirlpool Duet with steam front loader set. I loved it and actually thought about buying the set again but while I could wash a queen sized comforter in it I was stuffing it in and I am almost positive that they could not handle a good sized filler king comforter without possibly over loading it. Samsung seems to be one of the few companies that make larger sized machines. I will have the 5 year warranty on them plus my appliances will be included in my home warranty as well so while I hope I have no issues maybe this will at least cover any repairs needed. You might be right about not putting enough in? That seems to be a really large load that you showed. Do they seem to clean right? When I have put 8 towels, 10 hand towels & 10 washclothes in, that is when the machine wont balance out and they get tangled, I end up having to take 1/2 of them out, it happened when I had the first tech out, they did get tangled, he had to seperate them, and ended up taking some out just so it would spin.
I had many techs tell me I was filling it enough, and they told me that I shouldnt put more than I would in a TL. How confussing!!! You would think they would know?

The special paddles that should spray water on the clothes, Duet does not have the water holes, my older Frididaire FL did and I didnt have a problem with it rinsing or tangling. I asked this last tech about that, he tried to tell me that it does, I told him there is no water going in other than the what goes in from the front, he said the paddles fill up with water and than drops on the clothes, what???? Like I mentioned he wouldnt listen to me and he was I think just making stuff up.

I will continue to wash large loads and see how it does.

I guess this sort of says they help with how the clothes move... but it doesn't say to prevent bunching... I really thought the 'big idea' of these special (hummm) paddles was the flowing water...

I do think my wash comes out very clean, and I admit I always select the extra rinse option... (skin issues...) I suppose I could try to leave it out now that I've been using the charlie's soap for over 6 months now.. but I think I'd rather not risk it!

mc58... I'm going to try a 'small' loac and see what happens here with regards to tangling... I only remember thinking I was wicked tangled 1 or 2 times, when I first got the machine...

Thanks plumbly22. I remember reading about these paddles and I guess it was the part about the inclined drum that made me think it had something to do with moving the clothes to the front of the machine.

I don't know if any of the larger FL spray the clothes with the wash fins...maybe LG?, but my 6k Miele does do this as the drum rotates and during the pause you can see the water raining down over the clothes.
