A friends Mom had natural curly hair until she became a diabetic! It's straight as a board now!

I've never heard of that happening. I hope someone here can give you an answer. I just wanted to tell you about my youngest sister. When she was about 6 years old she was getting out of a car. She had real long hair. As she got out someone closed the door and the hair in the middle of the back of her head got caught in the door. She said it hurt like the dickens. That part of her hair started growing in curly and did so until she died last year. The rest of her hair stayed as straight as could be.

Years ago, my 2nd son had quite a few radiation treatments and lost the hair on the back of his head. When it grew back in, it was a different color and very thick...My own hair has gotten curlier since I've gone grey. Never heard about hair going straight...

My brother has some very rare blood disease, while he was taking treatment for this (20 years ago), his Very straight hair fell out and curly hair grew in! It is closer to his normal hair...just a bit of curl to it now.

Pretty much the same happened to a friend of mine who had straight hair. After a year of monthy chemo her hair grew back very wavy, almost curly. I always thought hair grew in according to the way the follicle was shaped. I'm thinking differently now.

Oldest best friend went through lots of chemo and lost all her hair. When it came back in it was light brown and curly just like a poodle. Before it was almost black and straight. After a few years it's back to it's normal self (well with a little color help). She laughed a lot about that brown hair!

This happened to my mother, when she was pregnant with me! I got all the curls. Perhaps something hormonal?

My hair is naturally curly, but I prefer it straight. It pretty much does what it wants too. Some days it is straight, some days it is curly. Has to do with humidity here. I color my hair so I don't really know how gray I have. I think probably 75% gray. That might have something to do with it.

My Mom always had naturally curly hair, now it is straight. But, she is totally Grey and the texture is even different.

I had very curly hair since birth. When I was 9, I had my tonsils removed. My hair started coming in straight after that.... It seemed to be the turning point for my curly locks.

When I was 13 years old, I had Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. My hair had always been straight. With the Fever it all came out and came back curly. I really liked that! Went from curly to wavy and back to straight. But I am often asked when I get a cut or perm if my hair is naturally curly, and am told it is easy to curl.

Now it is just getting thinner. Bummer.

Linda, my mom had a similar experience to your sister's.

When Mom was 9 or so, she was playing baseball. She was accidentally hit near her temple with a bat. She said she was hit very hard hard and nearly passed out.

Her hair started growing in white/grey in that area. All her life since, Mom has had a wide white streak, about the size of her palm, in the front of her hair. I always loved it, but she usually keeps it colored.

My cousin Don when he was a child had that straight hair that is sooooo straight it stuck straight out from his head. There was nothing you could do but buzz it off. So he always had real short buzzed hair.

Now he is in his late 40 and has curly hair...

And my grandaughter Kylee had natural ringlets that looked like springs...when she got her long hair cut off for the first time there was no curl left in it. Straight as a pin.
Now she is 16 and her curl is coming back and it is kind of fuzzy...She has to use a straightening iron on it all the time.

And my hair used to be soooo thick..and now it is soooo thin I have a hard time covering my scalp....I hate it...

I had curly hair, wavy really but kept the top half very short so it would curl. For a year and half now, I haven't seen sight of a curl. I began growing the top back out. There was no point since it won't curl anymore. I wish I had an answer for you, but I have no idea why my hair is straight now. Maybe it's stress, as you say, but the back is still wavy and silky for the most part. I kinda think if I cut if off it would curl, too, but hardly any point in doing that. As it gets length to it, the top still doesn't even have waves, so now the back is wavy and the top is straight, if not somewhat course. Baffling and very disconcerting.

My hair became curly when I started Menopause.

Up until I hit puberty, my hair was very straight. It began to curl when I was about 10. It became firzzy by the time I was 13. I hated it. It had to be kept real short, or it stuck out all over my head like a black wad of fuzz. Then at 18 when I became pregnant, I lost all the frizz and curl. I was delighted, I could let it grow long. Over the next 10 years or so, a little of the curl came back, but just to the point that you could call it wavy. It happened the same way for both my mother and sister. Hormones seemed to play a big role in our curly or not so curly hair.

Then 5 years ago, because of an illness, I had to take Prednisone in large doses for about 6 months. My hair became very thick and the frizz returned worse than it had ever been. For about a year it seemed to get thicker and frizzier every day. It has gradually returned to waves and soft curls after the prednisone dose was lowered to a maintinence dose which I am still taking. The curl now is the best I have ever had.

When my mother was a young woman, she was making cake icing. Her hair was down, a very rare occurrence as it was always kept up in a bun. A bit of her hair to the right of the central part fell forward and wrapped around the blade of the mix master. That piece of scalp was pulled off. My mother called her father, a doctor, who came and stitched the skin/hair back in place. That is the only portion of Mom's hair that ever had any bit of a curl in it, the rest of her hair was stick straight. Mom was a bit of a accident prone woman, but she lived till 85 and was the best Mom ever.

I have never had any chemo, radiation or any other medical problems to make my hair go straight. All I can think of is the stress I was under for nearly a year. But, things are back to normal now and all my stress is "gone", so I wonder if my hair will start to curl up again.

Throughout my childhood, my hair was very thick with long ropey ringlets. Then I grew up and married the ex. My hair (still THICK) went poker straight. We divorced, hair still straight. Met now DH and my hair went back to its former curly state, still thick. "Nuff said!

I have a friend whose hair was very straight. We kept losing touch with one another. When I ran into her at our company picnic, her hair was curly like a spiral perm. She told me after the birth of each of her children, her hair became more and more curly. It is natural, and she hates it!
She has 3 kids, the oldest 2 are 18 years apart. The youngest was born just 2 ir 3 years after the 2nd one.

I asked my hairstylist about that the other day. SHe said that people's hair changes 3-4 times in their lifetime. That explains my daughters very curly hair going straight from age 5-6. My own straight hair has gone curly around the time I turned 40.

My friend's mom had leukemia and had to get a bone marrow transplant. Before the transplant, she had dark, curly hair. She received the bone marrow from a Swedish donor, and after the transplant, her hair grew in super blonde (almost white) and straight!

Stress can cause hair to change. I have naturally curly hair also. Two years ago, after my DH passed away, my hair got very thin and almost straight due to stress and nerves. It took probably 6 months or so before it started growing again and for the curl to start coming back. My hair is back to normal again, although I am not yet. So, good luck to you with your stress and hope it gets better.

I am 25 yrs old and have had very curly my whole life, my mother & farther are the same with curly hair. I have always done it both ways. Then a few month back I bought this really pricie hair mask to help take some of the fizz away. At first I did not see the change but one I let my just dry and did not try to straighten it and It HAS NO CURL at all. I have Stop using the hair mask will my hair go BAck please help?

I have had beautiful curly ringlet hair my whole life. It was the only thing i actually like about myself. After having my second child my hair went straight. It still has some wave but no more ringlets. I'm hoping and praying that they come back. this happened to my aunt. But thankfully for her her curls came back over time.

my hair has gone straight in the last year after having been wavy/curly/frizzy for more than 50 years. I hate it straight and am encouraged by those of you whose hair has returned to curly as your stress has decreased. hoping that works for me, too.

I was student in other city and when I get back to hometown and 1 year after that, got married my curl has GONE:( I don't know why,but I really do want to know.if any one know the reason please please please help us.I want my curl back,I have no child and no stress,I really don't know what happened:(

When I was a hairdresser in the early 60's one of my clients told me her straight hair became curly after the birth of her first baby, then came in straight after the birth of her second. She gave birth to her third baby it came back curly so she said she wasn't having any more kids! LOL

My hair is pretty much the same old crummy hair is I've always had, kind of half wavy and half stick straight. I do wish it would suddenly become wavy and courser because it's baby fine and I hate it but...hey at least I HAVE HAIR! It could be much worse!

I also hear that Menopause changes hair...oh joy...

This has just happened to me! Always had naturally curly hair and in the past couple of weeks it has seemed to lose its curl and its now straight! No change in medication but under a great deal of stress. Still have some body but no curl. It's very weird and no explanation.

I have blonde hair. When I was pregnant, a red strand showed up -- very strange. My daughter was born with red hair.

I realize this is an old thread, but I will say, its very likely hormones. Released by stress, age related, or otherwise, hormones.

I always had hair straight as a stick, fine & thin! Last year I began to get very stressed about things & my hair fell out in big chunks! My scalp also had something like psoriasis & dermatitis in it as well. I went to a knowledgeable dermatologist. She said that it was all from stress but I had also created a problem with my scalp that was very hard to heal. She gave me both a medication to destroy the scalp problem as well as minoxidil (men's strength) to bring my hair back. Even though I am 68 yrs. old I have very few gray hairs, but have red hair. Anyway as I began to use both medications as well as "calm down" my hair began growing back, curly & much thicker than before. I had tried minoxidil several times with just a little success. I was floored with how well it worked & how quickly the medication had healed my scalp problem as well! Many in my family have curly hair, but mine was always totally straight. Just wondered what might have caused my hair to become so curly! It looks just like my brother's now! I am NOT unhappy to have my hair coming back so fast, even if it is very curly!

My hair was mostly straight with a slight wave. Since going through the change, it has gotten curly. Mom's hair was board straight and went curly after she went through the change. Then she got on HRT and it went straighter.
