What a Coincidence!

Hi - I thought this was a great coincidence, and decided to share. I was driving to NH late afternoon/early evening yesterday, Jan. 10 (from MA, going up to a party with friends).

First of all, it was my birthday. Not a big deal now that I've reached 53, but anyway! As I was driving along I noticed an incredibly beautiful full moon, and thought how beautiful it was. I was switching around on radio stations trying to find a signal, and after settling with one for a few moments the topic, surprisingly, turned to the moon. The announcer said that that evening we were going to enjoy the most vivid, closest, and most full moon of the whole year. Apparently once a year the moon is at its most visible because it's the closest to us. 30,000 miles closer to us then at some point in July. And last night was the night!

So, I thought - hey, how cool is that! The best view of the full moon of the entire year is on my birthday! I kind of liked that. Then, the announcer said that, according to Native American folklore, that moon, the biggest and most vivid of the year, is referred to as the "Wolf moon".

Guess what my last name is.

Yup, my last name is Wolf. Cool, huh?

Gardenlen; Yes it took us a lot of time and money. We spent several thousand dollars fighting this. However, we are planning to sue the township and those involved in the case to recoup our losses. I have also contacted the district attorney's office, and the attorney generals office of pennsylvania to file a civil rights violation case against the township. There is also a new public corruption task force that was implemented and I am trying to contact them as well. The commissioner whom I mentioned in this story has lost his political backing for the new election this year. Hopefully this story has alerted the residents to the type of person he is and he will loose his seat. Galiana; It's funny you mentioned moving. My fiance and myself, have just bought a home in another county. One with a much larger piece of property. In the town we are moving to, chickens and goats are legal. I am very excited about starting a new garden the way I have always wanted to, after learning from all the mistakes i made my first several years of gardening. I already have the plans drawn up for the chicken coop and garden. I will post pictures of the new place at the end of the summer. One thing I do not look forward to is digging up my 20+ apple, apricot, and plum trees. I also have 36 blueberry bushes and 15 honey berry and currant bushes to dig up as well. It will be a busy, busy, fall, but I look forward to the prospects of the new garden.

Evison's Patio Clematis die in pots - coincidence?

Gardengal, I already mentioned that I have 20+ Clematis in containers of the same size (2G and more) with the same medium (Miracle Gro) at the same spot. All of them are perfectly fine except those two this year and one last year. Even a couple of babies in 1G pots survived and are growing like crazy. All these pots were grouped together and covered with leaves. To answer the second question: they do not need more time. They are DEAD. Both of them are almost decomposed :-( I can foresee one more question... No, they did not stay in soggy soil and the drainage was excellent. So, the bottom line: I lost 3 Clematis out of 30+ potted ones after 2 winters. All 3 of them were Evison's Patio Clemmies. All 3 of them had great rootballs when I bought them.

I am sure there a lot of lilies that Liliumguy grows that would not make it where you are. But there are a lot that will. Take a look at this in the Far North forum or this. As laskalady says, mulching (after the ground warms) might go a long way in curing your woes. Japanese (Oriental) lilies are typically late bloomers, and less hardy for yours (and my) region than asiatics. If they really are Japanese and not asiatic, you are doing extremely well. Most people by you can't get them to overwinter. It is typical for a pot grown lily to be shorter than when it is grown in the ground, because the pot it grows in is to small to support normal, larger growth. And/or hormones may have been applied to keep it short. Keep this in mind if you by more lilies already growing in pots. Really though, the best way to buy lilies is to buy bulbs in the fall. Do it NOW if you want to get some this year yet. Everything laskalady says I agree with. My guess is that you don't have a pH problem though. You could always work sphagnum peat into the soil to help with acidity, not to mention good soil structure, air capacity and moisture retention. Any amount will help, but you would need to add at least one-forth by volume to make a discernable difference in pH. Don't worry about overdoing it. Unless the soil is ALL sphagnum peat, it can't be too acid for oriental or asiatic lilies. Rick

Hello Mark and DMForcier, Thank you for the posts. It is an empty cement bag; I think it is made of plastic. I am not sure, sorry. I do not think it has drainage holes and the soil might be too much moisture as you mentioned. Usually the cement bags are waterproof. I thought it was a gunny bag, I was wrong. The straw on the bag is some pieces of broken old wall (I mentioned the components of the wall before) and the rain washed the soil and only the straw are remained there I think. The cans do not have drainage holes. My friend bought one of the plants last week. She told me the condition of the plant is not so good. The soil is now very hard clay. The plant has problem of powdery mildew, and some of the leaves are also yellowish. However the stem is very big and has sign of many new shoots. We have been planning to prune and change the soil. Insecticide and pesticide are not easily available there. So I told her to remove the leaves with powdery mildew and spray with water, vinegar and dish washer liquid mixed. I had noticed here on the west coast how beautiful the moon was last night. Wished I had our 2 year old grandson with us as he loves looking for and at the moon.

My DH's birthday was yesterday and he is out looking at the moon right now. It is gorgeous! And I collect stuff having to do with wolves, Ts, sweatshirts, prints, jewelry, blankets, books, etc.

Happy belated birthday! I was admiring the full moon rising last evening....got up several times in the night to look at it again....just like daylight outside! This morning, I took the garbage out just as it was setting...I don't know which time was the most beautiful!

What a beautiful moon that was! My entire yard was so illuminated that it almost felt like it was daylight. I can only imagine how many people must have been "howling" on Saturday night!!!

Happy Birthday! I noticed the moon was very big and bright when I took my dog out at 10PM. I called my son and we looked at it together. So cool!
