Maybe it's time to introduce myself :-)

Hi!

I recognize a lot of names from other GW forums, especially Kitchens, and I've posted here a bit. My husband & I built our forever house and moved in about 2 years ago. We live in a heavily wooded area, though in the city limits. DH designed the house with plenty of input from me. Stylewise, it's sort of craftsmen meets mid-century modern. That may sound odd, but we like it. :) Not having to consider resale value allows us to do things to please only ourselves.

We share our house with Priscilla, a 12 year old cat who thinks she's still a kitten. She needs another feline friend in the house. Now that she's an only cat, she talks to us a lot!

At one time I planned to furnish our living room as soon as the house was done. But after all the cost overruns and construction problems, we were so shell-shocked we weren't ready to even think about it. Then a lot of other things came up and we had more than enough to deal with. But now we're ready to make this room look as nice as it can - and get some furniture that supports my back.

I'll be posting plenty of questions soon.

Jamie, gorgeous plants. Thistledown has some real beautys. I ended up ordering another batch, but less than the first order. He even sent a freebie. Don't forget to leave feedback on Gardenwatchdog.com. He's a really nice guy, very generous, and honest. Your hoyas are good-looking, too. All your plants are. The first looks like a variegated Haworthia. I bought a similar plant on Ebay, same colors, thinner leaves, it's called Aloe 'wansley' variegated..very tiny. I'll have to snap pics. Thanks for turning me on to Thistledown. Let me know how your Fukien Tea works out. HD usually has them available. Do you know if it's evergreen or decidious? I love your CC..It's a true red. Walmart here I come. lol. Actually, I'd like a variegated CC, but they're hard to find. One seller on Ebay is selling a variegated 'cutting' for, are you ready? 49.99!! Right, I'll take 10, lol. Kim, why does Pilea freak out your b/f??? lol..that's hysterical. I'd understand if it was a 'Man-Eating-Plant,' lol, but a Pilea??? I just bought a variegated Euphorbia 'paddle plant.' Welcome Abbeyjo; Nice of you to let us know you are around, thanks for all the info. I am not anyone's mother but I have some wonderful nieces and nephews that I love to death and they reciprocate. It is truly a wonderful thing. I have been gardening for years and have been a member of GW almost since the beginning. There have been many changes as you can see by the ease of posting, posting pictures and the forums. There is also the availability of information on plants, diseases, etc. The round robin forum seems to be taking the place of the "Garden Party" although that might still exist, I have not visited there in quite a while, if it does. The MNF group is "Make New Friends" which is open to anyone interested in any robin. Most of the other robins have become more accepting of new members but there was a time when new people were not as welcome so this group was started to allow people to experience a round robin without all kinds of rules. Each host/hostess picks a theme and makes their own rules. It is really lots of fun and the best time to join a robin is in the growing seasons because then you trade plants. Not sure where you are from but here in the great state of Maine we have four seasons, summer, almost winter, winter, barely winter. We love summer for obvious reasons. Come visit the MNF swap in progress and think about joining the August swap. Welcome again. diene

Welcome aboard, Karen! You'll find most CFers to be friendly and have spirited discussions, with lots of opinions but very few flames or trolls. There are a few taboo topics which can never be resolved, such as the presence of flour and sugar in cornbread, but even such discussions are generally pleasant...which leads me, indirectly, to my story of a huge culinary disaster. Christmas dinner some years ago...had a dozen or so guests, gonna make a nice rib roast. As a side dish, some cornbread dressing... so I'm making a big batch of cornbread to make the dressing. A quadruple batch, in fact, in a big 14x17 pan, batter filling it nearly to the rim. Oven preheated to a sizzling 450. I open the oven and pull out the oven rack, and place the heavy batter-filled pan on the oven rack. Unfortunately, the oven rack had not been placed properly before I pulled it out, and the little hook on the far end of the rack was not engaged, so when the heavy pan was placed on one end of the rack, the other end reacted to the laws of physics, turning the whole setup into a see-saw. The batter pan not only fell, but it flipped open side down onto the interior of the HOT oven door. Batter sizzled then scorched in place. Wet batter oozed off the sides of the door and onto the floor. So about an hour and a half before I'm to serve dinner to my guests, I have no cornbread to make dressing with, and a humongous mess to clean up on the floor and in my oven. One of my favorite lines from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: Clark:"Dad, how did you make it through all these Christmases?" Dad: "I had a lot of help from a pal named Jack Daniels." Just so.

That's my kind of antiquing! Actually I do have a few good pieces, bought at friends' and neighbors' yard sales. furletcity, no worries about the sewing. Here's how I see it: because I have sewing experience, it was easy for me to learn to set tile and do woodworking. I bet this sort of thing is universal. So, think of something you're good at, and imagine how that could give you an entree into another talent area. Sooner or later you'll work your way around to sewing. My grandmother showed me a little, but mostly I took classes at a local shop and got lots of books at the library, and made TONS of mistakes! I think fabric is way more forgiving than wood or tile though.

Hi Liz! (waves) I remember you from kitchens. Good to see you over here. Ask away - there is so much good advice on this forum and so many talented folks. I'm sure you'll get lots of inspiration.

If you don't mind I'd like to introduce myself, as well. I've posted on here on and off over the years but usually hang out on the garden forums. We are empty nesters and had our home built 18 yrs. ago from our design. We wanted an old home but didn't want to move to the places where we could find one we liked, plus we fell in love with the acreage we have now so we ended up designing this house to look old and have been adding details toward that goal ever since.

We have kitties, too, three of them. We love dogs as well but don't have one at the moment. The other three fur babies keep me busy enough for now.

I'm working on my living room, too. I thought I had it all done years ago but as they say, things never stay the same. I'm having lots of fun with this new project after a two year diy kitchen project. : )

Hi Liz, so nice to make your acquaintance! I'm relatively new here, having started out on the antique roses forum where I still post regularly. We hope to see lots of pictures as you embark on your living room project. Many of the people here have really great taste and ideas galore to help you make the best of your space.

I also have an older cat, a giant Maine Coon whose fur friend is our Yorkie who loves all cats. It's such fun to see them interact together. There are so many kitties in animal shelters who are looking for a loving home. We always try to adopt adult cats who are not as easy to place as the kittens, and they're so grateful to find a home. Sorry, I'm getting off the subject here, but I just thought your Priscilla might enjoy a pet of her own.

Hi liz,

I'm mostly a lurker here, although I started out posting regularly on "building a home" forum.

Welcome Liz I don't give any advice, well much, but I have learned so much just looking and listening.
Since I joined and started looking at pictures I have redone my living room twice lol.

Glad you found your way over here, Liz! I remember you from Kitchens. Gosh, I love that forum! I saved a LOT of money with the advice and vendors I found through the people there.
