Marriage is Over

Hi everyone
Sorry I haven't posted in a while but it has been stressful the last few months.

My DH and I split up and I moved out a week ago. It is a long story and although I won't go into the details I wanted you to know that I am okay. I've never been on my own before and it is a new experience for me. I have the support of family and friends which is helping me get through this. DH and I are not going through any bitter battles and have separated peacefully. We both accepted responsibility for our actions and this is the best thing for us. We were together 25 years but I knew deep in my heart that this was the best thing for me.

Please bear with me during this time. I will be posting more and keeping you updated on things. I know I can always count on my KT family for support.

I always enjoy the athleticism of some people gained by jumping to conclusions! Branding him a "loser" without any more info than he's unemployed. I guess I'll have to remember every time someone says they're out of a job here, to remind them that they're a "loser". And to be married and unemployed, sounds like we've had a few "winners" around here! I agree with much of what Wildchild says, but obviously not all. And nycefarm and paula_pa really hit the nail on the head. There are lines across which people cannot cross and be my friend so yes, I will put conditions on a friendship! You will not embezzle from me and remain my friend is one thing. You will not lie about me, damage my reputation and get me into trouble unjustly and remain my friend. There are certain things that are beyond acceptability. At the same time I can accept differences where it's not something major. Each person has their own level at which choose how major something is. Why would the wife stay with him? Could be a lot of reasons. Could be she doesn't want a divorce. Could be that she believes in her wedding vows and takes them seriously. Not everyone finds divorce as fashionable as do some. Could be she's waiting for him to go back to work to try and get more in a settlement. Could be she knows nothing about it. Could be she's a nutcase. Could be a lot of reasons and without knowing more it's pretty arrogant to condemn either one of them. Do we even *know* there *is* a wife??? LOL We don't even know if the guy is in agreement with the friend! I know how that goes from experience! A co-worker and I would get together quite often. We were good friends and nothing more. We shared a crazy work schedule and it wasn't compatible with other friends for various reasons so she'd get together, talk, go to flea markets, go out to eat, but certainly not a "date" by any means. It was clear I didn't want more with her, especially after getting to know her better. It didn't take long to figure out why she was divorced three times! Massive trouble handling money and other issues. But we were friends, would help each other out occasionally as friends do. But then the sideways comments about when we're getting married coming in from other co-workers and other friends. Well, she was telling them that we were getting married. Uh, not quite. So, it might be a good idea for some of you folks to remember what happens when you assume. AFAIC, if the husband and wife are on the same page that it's over and is an issue of time, I have no problem with someone seeing someone else. If it's a platonic relationship anyway, which it could be - we do not know, I have no problem with that either. I do think, as a friend, I would say something about how I feel about it, but especially on this topic, I'd give it some deep thought and decide if I'm a little too demanding. I realize there's many who subscribe to the if you an't say anything "nice"... I'd advise you simply proceed with caution. Make your feelings known. But to cut off the relationship at this point could certainly hurt you a lot more than them. Especially if you don't know the facts. And maybe when you think about it, there's a way you can work this out in your own mind. OJ, you can just open up a second window and switch back and forth when you need to reference something. I find it easier than scrolling up and down the page. Ctrl+alt+shift+N will duplicate the page, including the page history in Opera. And you can refresh the page and see if anything new has been added while you're typing if it should happen to get lengthy.

I'm so sorry for all of your recent losses. Truly, the timing for your SC's arrival was horrible, and I wish their father would have put his foot down and simply said "No - This is not the right time." But that's old news... Sadly, it's not unusual for Bio parents to undermine their 'replacement' steps... And that's unlikely to change unless somehow, the BioMom can be made to realize that having two good mothers is SOOOOO much better for her children than having one "good" one (her, of course!) and one that they dislike and disrespect. But that can be a difficult understanding to reach, and it would be virtually impossible for you to help her reach it. Any chance your husband could help? Or your MIL? The book 'Divorce Poison' is a wonderful resource you should definitely look into. It's all about handling Ex's who undermine you in destructive and damaging ways. About how to 'take the high road' without 'lying down' and silently taking the abuse. For example, you know BioMom's mad about failed marriage #2, so in a way, her blaming you for failed marriage #1 makes sense. It's not fair or accurate, but I'm sure you can understand her feelings. Well guess what -- so can the SC. All you have to do is explain it to them kindly, truthfully and respectfully. Everyone says hurtful things they don't mean sometimes -- it's not unforgivable. Let them know that their mother is hurting, and that's why some of the things she's saying aren't true. That everyone makes mistakes and that our goal is to forgive them. (Bring God into it if that's relevent for you and for them.) I can understand your pain at how SD trashed all of the lovely things you bought her. But try not to let that hurt you. Instead, simply let her live with the trashed stuff, and know that she is the one sleeping under that stiff comforter and having to wear those bleached-out clothes to school. If she asks for more stuff, the most natural answer in the world is that you won't be buying any more nice stuff until she has demonstrated she is responsible enough to take care of it. You're probably right that they will be back. And your sense that its not right for the kids to ping-pong back and forth according to whoever offers the best deal of the moment is right on target. But when they do indicate that they want to come back, I'd insist on some ground rules. Chores for everyone, respectful treatment, allowances, responsabilities -- you know what to do. Let them see the expectations and buy into them before they move back. FWIW, you sound like a wonderful person and a really good parent, and I'm betting this is something you can and will work through. 15 years from now, those SCs will be so glad you're in their lives. May it happen much sooner --

This sister is not the one with weight issues. In fact she is a beautiful girl. But I know she has some self esteem issues. She is on meds for anxiety because she has social anxiety. And she gets mad real quick. She is always mad at at least one sister. Her latest is that she is mad at one of my sisters for being friends with her bf on facebook. Even though her and her bf hung around my other sis and her bf everyday for weeks and they all became friends my sister was mad at her sis and bf for being on eachothers friend list! Its insane.

Thnaks for the replies. I was all excited about the microwave drawer until I saw the price - $5-600?!? Seriously! DH would flip! We are already looking for places to cut costs as this build is seriously pushing our budget. The hanging sapcesaver MW is an idea. We'd have to get dimensions and check it out, as that space (under the cabs on that side) was going to be for the coffee maker. I personally like the pantry idea, but not sure DH will go for it. I'll bring it up tho. On the updated plans it looks like the pantry has been whittled down to 4'10 by 5ft and has a chunk taken out of the corner, so I am not sure how much space will be in there. I don't want to get rid of the message center all together. It IS full height (it is going to house slots for mail for each family member, cook books, recycling can underneath for mail recycling, and our cordless phone) and only 12 in deep I think so not sure a MW could go there anyway. Sam, I've been there and done that. You are in the toughest stage right now, but I promise you that things will get better and you will be fine. Hugs to you. I know it isn't easy.

Divorce is always stressful and tough... I am sorry you are having to go through this... but you are a strong lady.. and when God closes one door, He always has a better one waiting..

Sorry to hear this~~~in December I heard a motivational speaker at a womens retreat say~~your heart breaking is letting all the bad stuff out, to make room for the new good stuff. It will get better everyday, being on your own for the first time will be a great adventure, just breath~relax and let it happen.

DD left her SO of 20 years about 6 months ago.....I have never seen her happier.

Please remember to take care of yourself, plenty of sleep, food and drink. Play fun uplifting music to sing and dance to. Watch funny shows. Keep friends and family close.

I didn't go through it, but family members have. It's like a death, we treated it that way, with all the stages.

I am so sorry that you're going through this. My experience was that once I got over that 'shock ' period, I entered one of the best times of my life. I loved my singlehood and I hope you experience that, as well.

Being on your own does not have to be lonely, remember that.

By the way, after more than ten years of being happily on my own, I met and married the true love of my life. I wasn't looking for it, that's for sure.

Life happens! I hope that your recovery will be strong and sure.

Thanks everyone. It is not as stressful as I imagined. went and did my laundry at the laundry mat today for the first time. I have my moments when it is quiet but then I think back to the reasons I left and I am reassured that I made the right choice.

That your friends and family are with you is one of the most important things. When I divorced I did not have this and it really made things miserable for me and forever changed my relationship with my family members. You are very lucky to have their support! For me, I have found that divorce after almost 25 years was the most difficult thing that I ever did in my life. I really don't know how people take divorce so easily...it pretty much destroyed both my EX and me. 25 years is a long time.

woohoo! to know you'll get to have something stay the same (the hardest part of a divorce, everything changes). I'm wishing you really good thoughts. Cry on our shoulders and rejoice in overcoming all you like. You're likely to have both issues. I hope more of the latter!

I second that emotion.

I'm 11 years out of a 24-year-marriage to my childhood sweetheart. It was a tough road, but it had a surprisingly good and happy ending.

I wish the same for you.

Thank you everyone for the support. I just spoke with my sister and BIL and it made me feel better. Had a sad moment last night....cried for a bit but it actually made me feel better to get some emotions out. I know it will be a new experience for me as well as my DH but I know we are both going to be ok in the end. Happiness will not elude us.
