Yes, it can be terribly upsetting to witness a seizure. Did the vet say they can keep the condition under control?

I've had two dogs with seizure disorder. One of them, Angel, had seizures for a period of time (some months or a year, I forget exactly how long), and then they stopped. No known reason why they stopped (or why they started). She eventually lived to be 16--and she was a big dog.

Our female Labradoodle, Andi, had two Grand Mal seizures in one day and has not had another since. We kept her on Phenobarbtyl for 3 months then weaned her off. You are right, they are scary to watch. Her brother (same litter) had an episode, which we think was also a seizure about 3 months ago. It was not a Grand Mal but it was like he was spasming and couldn't get up. His didn't last as long and he didn't have the confusion she had, like "What just happened to me?" His may have been spasms from swimming so much that day but the vet still called it a probable seizure episode.

Thank you, Susan. The vet wants to watch her at this point, because due to her small size (3.5 pounds), it will be difficult to give her a therapeutic dose without overdosing her. Phenobarb is very hard on their liver, so if she only has seizure infrequently, he said it may be better to leave the condition untreated as he feels you have to weigh the benefit of not having seizures against the damage caused by the medication. She recently developed a strange fear of the stairs, so she is always on a level surface and not likely to be in any particularly dangerous situation should she have a seizure when home alone. But if she has another one within a month, he feels she should be given the medication.

Mboston, I sure hope Gracie has the same good luck that your dog did...

We had a dachshund that had seizures once in a while, the vet said he didn't recommend medication. Our dog lived a long life.

wow.. I'm sorry! and happy for your DD!

Gracie is really cute. My Jake has had mini seizures for the last couple of years. His legs sort of give out and he can't get up for a minute or two. Now he is on thyroid medication and that is supposed to help the seizures also. My vet said that unless his seizures were frequent, he wouldn't be put on anti seizure meds.

Poor Gracie; I'm glad she's getting better.

Long ago, I had a sweet little Chihuahua/Fox Terrier mix, "Susie." After her third, and last, litter of pups she had terrible seizure similar to Gracie's. My vet told me it was "milk fever."

She recovered quickly, and continued nursing her three fat pups. She lived to age 13+. I still miss her.

I had an Irish Setter that had a seizure when she was 2 yrs old. It was very frightening and you feel so helpless. The vet said it could be the beginning of many or she might never have another one. As luck would have it in my case, she never had another one....lived to be 13 1/2. Thats a pretty good life for a larger dog. Hope your puppy never has another one.

great news about your DD...sorry for Gracie...keep us posted on how she's doing...with her being so small...I'd probably follow the vets advice and see how she does without meds!

Wow, that is a strange twist! I have thoughts on that, and imagine you might, too:-) Funny, too, that dogs can be trained to anticipate seizures, and help people who suffer from them by warning them so they can get somewhere safe.

We fostered a dog that had been known to have seizures, and was on medication (also for thyroid). I was worried he would suffer one, and I would freak. Fortunately, he didn't.

I hope little Gracie gets better, and the seizures stop. She sure is adorable:-)

Amber's Jack Russell has seizures and they are pretty frequent. He has been to Purdue for treatment and to so many vet's. He is on I think 3 medications and an herbal something she got from the vet. The herbal stuff has helped but he may have a seizure once a week. You never know when it will happen. It is bad to see and I have seen him have terrible ones and one right after another. I have held him while he was having them and we are hurrying to the vet's. Sometimes it is weather related, like a storm moving in. Your little Gracie is so sweet I wish the best for her.

Awww, poor little Gracie. I also know how disturbing it is to watch a dog with seizures. I do hope Gracie can live without the meds. She's is so tiny.

My lab mix, Missy, had epilepsy and lived to be 11. She never had to take meds and her seizures were few and not long lasting which can make a big difference.
