I wash mine regularly in Asko and Miele machines (both with stainless drums). Sometimes some of the fake leather components can get damaged, though, so I've had some failures. Those closer to old-time Keds or Sperry Topsiders, meaning more canvas less other stuff, do better. I've never tried Heelies, or those with the blinking lights on the heel or any of the fancy high-tech sole materials.

I take the insoles out and remove the laces and wash both inside a mesh bag in the same load as the shoes. Then air dry with the tongues sticking up and out IYKWIM.

I've got a Bosch Next 500 and I wash tennis shoes in it. They come out really white and look almost new. I do wash them with a regular sized white load, thinking that perhaps the towels, etc., will sort of cushion the shoes as they tumble.

Nice to hear others do it also. In the past I have also thrown in a few towels to cushion the plastic pieces on the inside of the drum. That is particularly what I was worried about hurting with my new machine.

A pair of nikes I bought many years ago said they were machine washable, but suggested that the shoe be placed inside of a sock before washing. The picture on the label showed a front-load washing machine, though I washed them in the top-load washer I had at the time. They came out fine.

I asked this same question a few weeks ago before purchasing my new Bosch 500. I was specifically concerned about washing sandy shoes after hiking in the desert and I must admit that I have not had the nerve to try anything yet with sand. But I have washed shoes with "regular" dirt with no problem with one exception. I had a malodorous pair of flip flops that I thought the XXtrasanitary cycle would take care of. The heat from the water must have been great enough to melt the adhesive in the shoes and what emerged after the wash were pieces of my former flip flops.

Oh well. I got new flip flops anyway.

We wash ours in the HE2T and dry them on the rack in the dryer and they come out great. In particular, I have washed white leather K-Swiss and multi-material Sauconys.
