Chipper/Shredder to make sprigs from sod
Comments (1)That must be a special machine (in the youtube) for that specific use. Probably tears stuff apart rather than cuts into pieces. And doesn't seem to be throwing any dirt out.. If you put that much dirt into a wood chipper (or a wood shredder), the blades will be pretty dull by the time you get through one stack....See MoreWhen you pick mint sprigs, how long does it take to regrow?
Comments (6)Undoubtedly someone will say that you can cut more than 1/3 off - they usually do when I say to leave 2/3's of the plant. Leaving 2/3's of the living plant is the rule of thumb for pruning and herb harvesting. Mint will survive a harder cutting than 1/3 off, but it will take it longer to bounce back and regrow enough for you to harvest from again. You're doing the right thing. Start small and slow with your harvesting. You'll get the feel pretty quickly as to how much you can take and how your plant will respond. And if you start slowly in regards to harvesting, you can learn without any of those, "oh, I shouldn't have done that" moments. FataMorgana...See More2010 Sprig Fling in review
Comments (48)Diana, I'm so glad to see you posting here! I hope the tomato plants do well for y'all. Isn't it disheartening how, as we get older, we have more aches and pains in our creaky bodies after a good day of gardening and yard work? I remember the good old days where I could be outside from sunrise to sunset and not even feel it the next day. (Those days are gone.) Hope your DH didn't overdo it while planting those tomato plants. Leava, I love my soap too. It feels so nourishing on my dry, gardening hands when I come inside and wash them with it. Good luck with the teaching art studio in El Reno. I hope you'll keep us posted on how it goes. Seedmama, Indeed we are jealous! I do wish I lived close enough to just 'drop by' to see Paula and Ken. Paula, Woo hooo! You really do have the perfect location, but you know, seriously, we'd understand if you didn't want to invite half the state to your place again. So, if you change your mind, just say so. Otherwise, you're likley to be "the hostest with the mostest" forever after. I promise I'm not going to grow too many tomatoes next year. Maybe I'll grow too many peppers instead. I hope the folks at the FAA enjoy their plants. Carol, Tim and I did get the sign you brought (thank you!) and I am planning to spray it with a clear coating before it goes outside. I clear coat pretty much all decorative garden things with the clear Kry-lon spray paint. Y'all, I hope to get my last raised bed planted today, and then I will start planting in the currently unfenced new areas and in containers. I feel like I'm ahead of where I was at the end of April last year....and I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping we don't have a monsoon the last couple of days of April. (For anyone relatively new to this forum, last year Love County had 12.89" of rain fall in less than 24 hours on April 29-30, which set back my mostly-planted garden for a month or two as the soil stayed wet forever. On another April 29th about 4 years ago, we received 9.25" and most of that fell in less than 4 hours. So, April 29th makes me nervous.) I cannot believe I've got the big garden almost planted. I still have tomato plants left to squeee in somewhere. lol I also cannot believe the Spring Fling is over. You know, once it finally arrives after months of planning and anticipation, it seems like it is over in the blink of an eye. Dawn...See MoreSprigging bluegrass?
Comments (6)J4c, you're a nut. :) But, you're posts often lead to interesting concepts and studies. Thank you. On the issue of sprigging KBG. What would be the advantage? Kbg seed is cheap. Seeding results are extremely successful, cultivation practices necessary for germination would be no greater than those needed for sprigging, establishment coverage is higher than sprigging (see the video in your link) and no need to bury or cover the seeds as is required for sprigging. HOWEVER, BELLA KBG is EXTREMELY interesting. I've never heard of it. A slow growing no-mow, dark green, spreading, low nutrient maintenance, drought and shade tolerant grass that will flourish in zones from 4 to 8? Snake Oil! B.S., but apparently true. Unfortunately, it can only viably be established by sod, sprigging or plugging. Still it just might be worth the effort and expense. Kudos to you J4c, for posting this. Thank you again....See MoreTeresa_MN
