HELP! Miele washer 4840 vibrating like crazy

Here's the situation:

New Miele 4840 in newly reno'd basement laundry on concrete floor with porcelain tile. Floor slightly sloped. Washer is in between laundry sink and dryer. When we had the washer on the floor for the 1st week, it was perfect - soooo quiet. This week, we finally got the contractor to bring help to hike it up onto the pedestal. Now it shakes like crazy and to top it off, may have loosened the vent to the dryer as the dryer filter/vent alarm is going off.......

So - it's not the floor (the washer is fine on the floor) so it must be the pedestal. The washer is level in all directions. What should we do now? These things are a beast to move/adjust.

Miele suggests anti-vibration pads, but this doesn't make sense - the pedestal doesn't move much at all and the floor is solid so I don't think they will work. How do I make the washer more stable ON the pedestal? I'm ready to ditch the pedestal soon......

We have older Mieles and once the feet are adjusted they need to be locked. Maybe one or more of yours have come unlocked?

Otherwise, it sure seems that your pedestal is the weak link.

the pedestal has it's own feet? which must be releveled? and adjusted for even weight distribution? and locked?

It's incredible attention to these types of details that makes Miele special in my mind, and worth the price. They put a lot of thought into the product. God forbid someone's child or pet end up inside the washing machine, but if it did happen wouldn't you then feel the trivial amount of money saved on a Whirlpool vs. Miele would have been money well spent? I don't begrudge anyone their choice of machine - it's wonderful having lots of choices. But if you look at the big picture of having a machine that will likely last you 20 years with a potentially life-saving feature, doesn't that alone justify the price? Here is a sad news story in case you think kids never die in washing machines. Here is a link to some front-load child safety devices. Consumer Reports blog article about how over 2,000 children end up hurt (or worse) each year in washers. Unfortunately the after-market door locks don't help once a child or pet is INSIDE the machine. This is where Miele's ingenious feature shines. I don't know whether other manufacturers have implement this feature like Miele.

Although I love Miele products I find some aspects of Miele ownership more than just frustrating as in why do we have to pay for an authorized installer? Home Expo, of all places, needs to mandate that their delivery and installation crew take the Miele training courses and become a Miele authorized installer. I have to say that for $200 I would simply apply it to the five-year extended contract: MieleCare Rates. After you install them call Miele with your serial numbers written down and tell them the day it was installed versus the date you purchased them and have Miele enter your registration into their database. They will tell you that you can do it on the web, but the web form has no provision of when you took delivery. I am now returning to an issue (which I have had since I bought the double ovens 2 years ago) with the temp on the ovens so another repair guy is coming. Is a Miele Service Representative coming to service on your oven, or a third-party? I would contact Miele (800) 843-7231 and ask for Javier, here at the West Coast, Long Beach Miele service center. Tell Miele what you have learned, and see whether they will make a judgment call when they arrive (otherwise is will cost you $150 for the service visit). Miele can be very accommodating with its customers so it is worth a try.

ssnetboy26, I know where your coming from, but at the same time it's tough to compare one person's experience and results with how it might play in your own house. Without the internal heater working you might get very different results between: (1) A basement install on a concrete floor where it's positioned right next to a domestic hot water (DHW) heater set to 140F in Florida with average cold water temps of 80F and soft water. vs. (2) A second floor laundry room in an old house without any floor reinforement with 150 ft of uninsulated pipe between the machine and the DHW heater set to 120F in Canada with average cold water temps of 50F and ultra hard water. Even with an internal heater, water chemistry alone could dictate very different experiences. In the end you have to decide if your willing to live with workarounds using a very well made machine with some firmware teething issues. Sometime seems out of whack when a quality manufacturer asks you to pay $1600 to $1800 for a washer with beta firmware. Given the reality of the alternatives it might still be the right choice.

My pleasure. Yes, I have several of their laundry products and their instruction manuals tend to be rather vague. (I learned a lot about the machines from trying different cycles and options and observing them in action.) I rarely use the soak option in my older model Miele washer, so I really don't miss it in my W4840. The machines clean so well that you probably won't miss it either. Give the longer, hotter cycles with the heavy soil (prewash) and sensitive (extra rinse) options selected a shot. I'm certain you will be very pleased with the results.

This is where someone facile in the installation of Miele products would have paid-off better versus your contractor. Miele has unfortunately removed the link to their ten page pdf for their pedestals. There is very important information as to how to install these pedestals such as the following caveats: Fit the transport struts into the washer. To put the washer on its left side, the transport struts have to be fitted.

Did the contractor ever lay the unit on its side? If so, it must be laid on its left side only.

Do you have the matching Miele dryer? If so, did you connect the two units with the provided connectors?

Other instructional caveats: Danger!

The washer/dryer stand is suitable for single set-up.

When setting up a washer and dryer combination, the stands have to be connected.

The stand is not suitable for installation of a washer and dryer stack.

To prevent tipping, as a matter of standard practice, the appliances have to be bolted to the stand.

For a dryer single set-up, the stand has to be bolted to the floor with the floor installation kit M. no. 00253532. At least two feet of the stand have to be bolted to the floor, and at least one of them has to be a rear foot. For optimum stability, fasten feet positioned diagonally.

Danger of injury: Do not stand on the drawer!

Set up only washers/dryers that are not installed, for de-installation instructions, refer to the operating instructions for the appliance.

During the installation, make sure that children or animals cannot get into the work area.

Wear non-slip work gloves and safety shoes while doing installation work. Non-compliance may lead to, e. g., slipping, and result in serious injury.

During the installation, be sure to keep your body and especially hands and feet out of the space under the appliance, or between the
appliances.

For the installation, tip the washer onto its left side, and the dryer onto its right side. It is important to have sufficient manpower to handle the weight of the appliances. Non-compliance may result in serious bodily injury, especially to the back. For the weight of the units, refer to the operating instructions for the units.

Fire Hazard! Do not store flammable items in the drawers.

Before starting any service or installation work, safely disconnect the appliance from its power source.

I don't have these pedestals, but balancing my 1215 was a long trial and error process, but it paid off. (first floor, wood floors). Even when you get it as level os possible, you probably still need to slightly tweak it. There was a post long ago about this. During a spin cycle, feel the feet. You can actually detect which may be vibrating more and then slightly adjust it (down usually). Then repeat and repeat and repeat. However, on a basement floor I bet it will be easier. Much more solid and "sympathetic" vibrations are probably not an issue.
