Miele Gurus - 1215 or 6065?

Calling all Miele fans! :D

I made the mistake of purchasing an HE3T a few years ago and now need to replace the washer and dryer. DH and I have decided we are giving Sears and all other Americanized appliances the boot and will go with Miele. This is what I wanted the 1st time but we talked ourselves out of it due to price. What a mistake that was!

As most of you know, Miele dumbed down the 1215. I read as much as I could find on this forum and then called my local dealer. He admitted he wasn't thrilled with the changes in the US Miele either but did his best to help me out. So he started searching for a 1986. He was able to find the washer but not a matching dryer. He said I could stack the new model dryer on top of the 1986 but would have to do so w/out the stacking kit. DH and I ruled out this option because we have small children and felt it wasn't worth the safety risk if one of the kids decides to hang on the machine.

He then mentioned the new models coming in Jan. The capacity sounds great but I have a very small laundry room and must stack them in order to have space left for a sink and folding area. Even if I wanted them side by side w/ a counter on top, they would be too tall since they are 40 in. IÂm barely coming in at 5Â2" so a counter that high would not be comfortable for me.

This brings us to choosing either the 1215 and matching dryer or going all out and getting the Little Giant 6065 with matching dryer. The Little Giant looks incredible but we will incur other expenses for rewiring our laundry room for 2 phase 220V and adding extra support under the floor. For what IÂll spend on the Little Giant set, I would come close to buying two sets of the 1215 which would be great if I had 2 laundry rooms. (Dream!) But will I be forever kicking myself for getting the dumbed down machines instead of the real deal?

What to do?!

Here are my laundry issues:

Family w/ small children = big messes

Need 6K capacity (at least!) My avg load is 12-13 lbs and thatÂs w/ small kids. Their clothes are only going to get bigger.

Need to wash dog bedding

Child w/ eczema - so I need a machine that cleans everything and rinses well.

I rarely send anything to be cleaned. I usually clean all of our silk items, DHÂs wool slacks, dress shirts, my linen items, etc. Again, this is due to skin sensitivities.

Anything else I should think about? All help is welcome!

Frankly, I think the 6065 would be total over-kill. Way more expensive that any typical family ought to think about for domestic use. Not to mention the extra expense of special electrical requirements. Then again, it's your pocketbook.

I also don't like what I'm hearing about the new Americanized Miele washers being introduced down the road. It sounds like they've dumbed them down even more, and that they'll be similar to the Bosch and Siemens machines.

I think your best bet would be to grab a 1215 now, while you can. While I much prefer the older model 1918's, which I have in both of my homes (with a dial and actual temperatures on the control panel), the 1215 still includes most of the same engineering, and has a proven track record. The major complaint I hear about the 1215 is the inability to run just a simple spin cycle. While I'd miss having that capability, I use it so seldom, that I'd probably live.

I'd like to think that the new generation Mieles will include the same reliability and longevity as the old tried and true models -- but I'm skeptical about how it will be possible on a bigger machine that I'm hearing may include a lower price point. I'm also leery of its ability to to heat water fast and hot enough, given that the new washers are supposed to operate on 110 volts. Doesn't sound like a vastly improved machine to me.

Of course, what I'm hearing may be pure speculation...but it makes me think that Miele won't be what it used to be --at least here in North America. I hope my 1918's last forever.

Quick post here, most of the stuff about the new Miele's is pure speculation - and I still disagree with that the 1215's are dumbed down as beside the lack of a separate spin cycle (which personally I have never used), they are still a lot more flexible than any other European washer available on the market, and if people want to bash Miele for dumbing down then they should look at the new BOL Asko model. I have also heard from a reliable source that the controls will be the same as a high-end European model, so will actually be more flexible than the current 1215's. (In fact I think that has been posted somewhere on the forum before).

It seems like speculating and accusing that Miele is dumbing down and whatever is the current fashion this month.

Vegmom - I would imagine that either the 1986 or 1215 should be quite sufficient for your needs.

I have a pair so I can chime in... If your outlets are directly behind where the units will be placed (which typically would make sense, especially if stacked) you must keep in mind that the molded plugs provided by Miele are NOT the normal 90 degree "flat" style like most US 3-prong dryer plugs. They plug straight in and then there's about 3-4" of handle on the plug. So they must stand off from the wall by at least this much to avoid crimping the wires. If you have flexibility in where your two dryer outlets will be placed, if you have them placed to one side of the units they can be placed closer to the wall or undercounter. One last thing...with the dryer you MUST provide 208V, not the usual 240V. The dryer will not work overvolted. This requires a step-down transformer to be installed by a qualified electrician. robert_laundry - It may be somewhat academic, but I thought the US 1900 series spun at a max of 1400 rpm. Are you sure about the 1600 rpm figure? At this level of spin your probably reaching a point of diminishing water extraction returns anyways. FWIW, I've calculated the g-force of the 48xx as about 600 and the 1900 (assuming 1400 rpm) at about 520. A larger radius drum spinning at the same speed does generate greater forces. If the 1900 series does do 1600 rpm, it will generate 680 g-force. No matter how you look at it the clothing is coming out with little water left behind no matter which of these machines you choose. Once crooks101 has his new machine it will be interesting to hear how well it works overall (if heater is used in all cycles and if the machine can reach top spin speed most of the time). Our old Asko could almost always balance the load and spin out at it's max (1500 rpm). Hopefully the big Miele can do this as well. Crooks101 - Once asked Miele what the W4840 weighed, and they said about 290 lbs. Still light compared with the commercial machines, but quite a bit heavier than similar sized machines from all the other big FL domestic machine competitors (range from 192 lbs for the LG Steam washer to 245 lbs for Kenmore HEt5). The added heft must speak to their choice and thickness of materials and no doubt a very heavy outer drum/ballast. I know we are suppose to abide by the strict directions Miele provides, but has anyone lived life on the edge and loaded the W48xx beyond 3/4 full? If so, how did it do? It's hard to believe a W48xx could be loaded up any less than similar Whirlpool/Kenmore/Bosch/LG/etc. It is interesting that Miele doesn't officially list a weight fill level for this machine. It's hard to know if Miele is doing this to play the large capacity game like their competitors, or if they really don't want you to compare their different product lines. Even if the W48xx capacity is only 8 kg, it's still a 33% increase over the 1900 series. For us that would mean about 3 to 4 fewer loads per week

I am not going to tell anyone what to buy. We all have different situations. Many on this forum are having good success with the 4840. It seems like if you need the jumbo capacity then it would be OK and you can get the heater to work just not on normal. I think older Whirlpools don't use their heater on normal either. I don't need a washer the size of a house. I separate clothes by fabric and color especially since higher temps can remove dyes faster, and will also cause anything with spandex to quickly deteriorate. I do wash comforters in my 6K with no problem but that depends on the bulkiness of comforters. So in the future if I need a new comforter I won't buy a bulky one. The 5 and 6k machines have been in use for many years in the U.S.A and all over the world, but it is only here in the U.S.A that we feel that things must be big to get things done. I understand the idea that 20 sets of jeans can be washed at one time. I also understand that folks want to wash comforters, but I also find that I can wash larger loads in my 6K machine than I could in my super capacity top loader and they get cleaner. So I guess it depends on what your needs are. If you sort your laundry are you going to wash the equivalent of 20 pairs of jeans in each load? Here's my trick. If I have a particularly large load, one with heavy soil, I will use the extended cycle which washes and rinses longer. Otherwise I don't need extended; things get clean with the regular shorter cycle. If the load is large and dirty and can take higher heat I use the regular short cycle and increase the temperature. if the load is small the machine reduces the cycle times and everything still gets clean. so there are a lot of variable you can play around with the achieve the result you want. The new 5.5K washers are 120V so that it will be easier for folks to install them..but they don't heat to 200F either. Will the older 220V models continue to be sold or phased out? I paid $75 to have the 220V line run from the electric box to the machine. Do you already have 220V? Are you willing to pay for it to be installed? I have not needed to use LCB since having my FL. Are you willing to LCB for heavy stains? Regular use of LCB is not recommended (or needed for cleaning) for the smaller ones because I think they contain a SS outer drum while the newer units do not. Does this matter to you? This is a new model only released to the U.S.A. I am sure Miele does a good job of production and testing but do you want to buy version one of anything or would be be better to wait for release two? Sure incremental changes have been made to the smaller units but the basics and footprint have not changed that much so they must be on version 150. The smaller previous miele models contain some of the same cycles the 4840 does, difference is they are smaller, use 220V and can heat the water hotter and faster. So like I mentioned every ones situation will be different. For me - I have had my washer(W1986) wince 2003 and there is nothing wrong with it. So I don't need a washer and plan to keep this one and have it repaired as needed for as long as possible. I do like having the option of higher temps, higher rinse levels and water consumption if I want it. This is a minor thing but I like the heavy SS door and lock on my machine too. Situations will vary. Do what is right for you.

We have had four different front loaders with matching dyers. We moved and left the first set behind in 2003, then we moved and left our second set behind in 2005, our third set the washer broke after just three and a half years, now on our fourth set. The first was a kenmore that is no longer made, the second was the small Bosch because we had a small space. The third was a regular size Bosch. And now we are back to the small Bosch because it fits the space. Over all I have been very happy with front loaders and have no regrets about going with a front loader for the fourth time. I have always left the door ajar and never had a smell issue. The gasket on the current one does need to be wiped down every couple of weeks. I have never used any special cleaning anything on or in the machines. I do either use HE laundry detergent or use less of the regular stuff. Right now I am using Charlie's soap, but I have successfully used a pretty wide variety of detergents. As a general matter front loaders have been common in Europe for a long time and have been the dominate technology in laundromats in the US for a very long time. So I find it to difficult to imagine that the general concept is fundamentally flawed. I feel like the FLers get our clothes cleaner with less wear than the TLers I have used. I have never used one of the new TLers without agitator though. I particularly appreciate the water savings as I do a lot of laundry with two kids and dust mite allergies. Plus we have a drought at the moment so I am trying to keep our water use down. I also really like how the laundry gets spun out so well. Shortens dryer time or air drying time quite a bit. As far as a specific recommendation, I have been very happy with the smaller Bosch set, but the bigger one broke down in a very expensive way after too short of a life span so I wouldn't be able to recommend it personally. My main piece of advice would be to avoid doing business with Sears. I had terrible service from them on two different coasts and when I complained about their service reminder calls waking me up at 5am the supervisor told me they would not stop calling at that hour and that she didn't care that they were waking me and my baby up.

Thank you for the feedback. It looks like DH and I have decided to go with the Little Giant models. After doing some more research and speaking with the commercial division of Miele USA, we were just in awe of the flexibility of this machine. I really believe it will be a better fit for our family's needs. I'm sure it would seem excessive to many but I spend a ton of time in the laundry room. ;)

James - I don't like what I'm hearing about the new Mieles coming to the US either. It's such a shame and it seems that Miele is forgetting who makes up their customer base.

Jon - I am one of the few that use the spin cycle quite a bit which was one of the reasons I have pretty much decided on 6065. I thought it was mostly speculation about the new models too until I spoke w/ my local dealer. He said he had flown to Germany and seen the new model coming to the US. After he gave me the specs, I knew it was not the machine for me.

I would love to get one of the new Mieles in the UK right now. Drool! But I'm sure the shipping cost would almost match the cost of the little giant set. According to one of the Miele reps I spoke with, I could get the euro machines to work if I just switch out the pump so I won't have issues with 60hz but that means I won't have a warranty or any other support. (sigh)

So it seems the little giant set would be the best choice if I want a true euro machine in the US....No?

We have the 1215. We much prefer our older 18xx, but that started leaking amongst other things. So we thought we were upgrading to the 1215. As it turns out, not only is there no separate spin cycle, more importantly, there is no separate rinse cycle!

Old thread. New machines will (should be) coming later this year. I'm not talking about the US-style 4K series.
