Just Had To Share--It's Official! Settled Today

Well, we are land owners! Woo Hoo. They break ground next week, I cannot wait to get started.

And I don't want to jinx anything, but we did have a buyer come through this week (maybe #66?, we are up to 69) who loved the whole house. They have to see if they can purchase it without selling current house. She told her agent so many things to make sure to pass along to us. This is the kind of person I want to sell the house to, someone who really appreciates all the work we have done. Crossing my fingers and toes. But of course, I'm always prepared for the worst.

So, you've seen the kitchen plan (it has been tweaked a little since then (the dish drawer looks like 2 drawers rather than one big deep drawer, very nice and balanced. The way I like it). I am going with Super White or White Fantasy. I've shmoozed the granite guy and he is now on the hunt for the more white with gray swirls type of slabs. We have months to locate this, so this is good.

Next on the list is shmoozing the foreman. Need to meet him and find out what his liquor of preference is. Nothing like an expensive bottle of scotch to pave the way to little favors.

Thanks to all of you for your support and pushing me to leave the KD1 and move on. I didn't think it was possible. but my builder almost seems relieved to have another option to offer to customers now! See? You ALL are so smart!

So exciting...and to be able to start so soon! Do you have an arial view of your property to share? I hope the sale works out too....stressful. Will be following your progress! Your kitchen is going to be amazing as is the rest of the house!

We closed on our land in December and are still working through plan details with the architect - getting close. And then there is the whole community Design Review to get through. I just want to go, go, go! Mister is more patient and wants to make sure we have the plan 100% (or as close as u can get pre-build) so we hope to break ground in March and be in by Christmas.

I do not know enough about farm subsidies to continue an objective exchange of views along that line. But I think I can defend the concept of subsidies. Ultimately, the fate of farming depends upon the weather. History shows that death by starvation can and has occured to millions during a year (365 days) of drought. The USA stands out as the single country that has consistently been able to offer relief in the form of grain - usually wheat and corn. This grain is stored in towering silos in the farm belt. This stored grain comes from farms, subsidised or not. The subsidies were most likely decided by politicians who govern with the consent of the governed. And I have a deep conviction that they have to. I believe that the economist Adam Smith may have said that Government must do only those things that the people cannot do for themselves. I believe that some of these things are Police and Fire Protection, roads and other communication........and farm subsidies. I have to believe that there are enough brilliant and dedicated meteorologists out there who are working hard to predict the weather to the extent that we will not have to depend upon the contents of those silos for our daily bread. But if Mother Nature decides otherwise I will be very thankful that they are there.

I have an embarrassing experience from the other side. There is a store here which has large tubs with the most beautiful flowers growing that I always admire. One day I parked near to take a walk in the neighborhood. I saw some seeds of Pink Salvia, I thot, I should ask - then I thot - oh no one collects seed. Even a woman was walking toward me, and I thot, oh she probably doesn't work there. So I took a couple of seed heads, and Yep, she said, "Please don't pick our flowers,", so I showed her I had seeds, not flowers, and she said, "We collect our seeds", so I apologized profusely and offered her back the seeds, which she said, "keep 'em". So my plan is - I'm going to send her seeds of my red salvia, my blue, and my white, and Yvonne's salvia, and tell her the story of Yvonne's salvia, and of course tell her about WS'ing. Hope this will make up somewhat for my rudeness! Always ask! I just haven't made up my mind if I should sign my name, or be anonymous - I'm still embarrassed. ellen

My uncle has hallucinations too. I went into his room the other morning and he was sitting on the edge of the bed with a dollar clutched in his hand. He then asked me, "How do I get off this bus? I've been trying to get off this bus for a long time, but I don't think I have enough money." I tried to distract him and gently told him that he was not on the bus, but in his room. He said "Well, I guess I can go back to bed then, huh?" He promptly went back to bed and fell asleep. It breaks my heart, because I can't fathom how confused and frightened he must have been. I'm sure you feel that way about your Mom too, and it's also scary for us.

Hey I was wondering when you were gonna show up. Yes, our street has gotten very popular due to the JCC and such. We bought it to walk to All Saints, where we're very active. I was a member of the gym at the JCC -- you're right it's a great facility! As for the listing on the cul-de-sac, it's side entry and the driveway is there, as is the mailbox, although the street address is "Drive" not "Court". It's not as "secluded" as being the next house down, but it does make a difference to having the kids able to play out on the driveway and such and not feel like they're running into traffic. The backyard is all natural and a gentle slope. I know what you mean about ravine -- I got vertigo just looking out the den window at my SIL's house over in Dunwoody Club Forest. I'd be scared to death to let my kids play in her yard. I'll check with the realtor about including a shot of ours. There's an open house on Sunday; you should go wander through. ;-) Do your inlaws have blue trim on their house? I'm trying to remember which way the street numbers go and which houses haven't turned over lately. The people behind me on the cul-de-sac are the owners of the Blue Fox Salon. The kitchen has tons of storage. I have a 5'x4' walk-in pantry, and the cabinet space doubled with the remodel. (Which was a complete gut and wasn't even finished when we decided to move. The orginal backsplash was spangly red glasstile, known in my house as the "Vegas Whorehouse Backsplash". Had that actually gone on the wall we would still be there, because you think the green isn't neutral, wasn't nobody gonna buy it with that backsplash! LOL!) Unfortunately, within the past couple of weeks 2 other traditionals with finished basements have come on the market in Kingsley; fortunately they're both in the $425K+ range. Based on the comps I think we're priced right ... we'll see.

That is great news Bee!! Congratulations on being land owners!

When you put your home up "for adoption" like you have- you want the perfect family to want to love it.... Hope you have found the right one!

Keep us posted...we will all live vicariously through your new house...all of it! Good idea to bring a little sustenance to the foreman... coffee and donuts for the crew in the AM from time to time does't hurt...no need to go overboard..but when you want something changed or moved, etc...it never hurts to grease the skids a tad...

While I am so happy for your new chapter, I am sad that you are leaving the current house because it is so wonderful! You put so many special touches in it and your furnishings show its full potential. Maybe you can help the new people with interior design advice? I hope they do it proud like you have ;) I'd take it in an instant if I were looking....

Congratulations to you! How exciting to be starting a new chapter in your life. I wish I lived in the area of your current house, I have seen what you have done in the "let's see the rest of your house" thread, and swear it would be a heck of a lot easier to buy somebody elses inspirations than keep try to muddle through it myself. I would buy it for the laundry room floor alone! Looking forward to see the progress.

What wonderful news! I'm delighted for you, bee. Here's hoping for a very smooth build and a quick sale of your current home.

PS I hope this won't be an issue for you but you should carry your tape measure with you when you go to check the progress of your home. We've built twice and both times, there were framing mistakes. There was a fairly minor error, caught before we moved in, on our first house (and this with excellent framers). Unfortunately, we didn't realize until too late that 2 of the 3 man crew who started framing our 2nd house had never framed a house before. ;-p We caught one of their 3 mistakes right away and had it corrected but we didn't discover the other two until we had moved in. We're fixing one of them now (we're remodeling bathrooms, etc) but we can't do anything about the other without spending a *huge* chunk of $$$. They poured a concrete pier and installed a support post 18" over from where it was supposed to go. We didn't realize this had happened until we tried to move the relatively small sized sofa into the playroom. We had to remove the door, take off the sofa's legs and we still barely managed to get it in because the of tight angles created by the support wall in the wrong place. There is a solution - sectional sofas - but it does narrow our furniture choices for this room. So fingers crossed that you don't have any problems like this ... but take your tape measure with you, all the same.

Just saw this. Do I detect a bit of fateful irony? You finally get a cabinet maker and a design you are happy with and a buyer who seems to really love your current house shows up? Had that buyer shown up earlier, I think you'd have felt forced to stay with your first cabinet guy and be trying to pull teeth to get half of what you want. Sometimes things work out just they way they should. Here's hoping a smooth sale and a smooth build follow right along.
