I use the word chesterfield all the time....it's what I call my couch/sofa. I bet a lot of people in Newfoundland use that word.

I use "britches" all the time...and always get laughed at. Pardon me people, I'm from Tennessee and am old fashioned. lol

I also still use "drawers". :)

Perhaps it's a regional thing with some of the words?

Looks like we covered a pile of words. someone want to make a list? This might be a good time capsule for our grandkids.

I still say most of these myself. I do have a question tho....hope someone can help me. Whenever we were "in dutch" with Mom she always referred to us as "messin' and gommin'...as in this sentence, "I told you all to sit and be good and here you all are just messin' and gommin'". I think it means "messing and gumming" as in "gumming up" something. Anyone else heard this expression before? And sometimes when we asked Dad where he was going if he were leaving the house he would say he was "going to grass to pick mullens". Anybody ever hear that one?

I had my longjohns on yesterday as it was cold and I also wear men's undershirts to give my back a little extra warmth.

I had never heard of a couch/sofa being called a chesterfield. Had to look that one up. Around here, Chesterfields are still known as the brand of cigarette that Lucille Ball smoked!

Let's see, what other words/phrases are seldom heard... "hard work", ethics, morals... "put it in the Frigidaire" (instead of refrigerator), "tail fins". Was just looking at some old DeSoto websites and the last model DeSoto had an optional record player! You could play 2 hrs of 45 RPM records while you drive.

I just wish more southerners had Will Smith's grandmother around... She slapped him around and told him he will speak English and speak it clearly. and she would smack him and make it clear: "a yawl is a BOAT!" LOL That's one great lady.

When I moved here to NC, I didn't know what these women were talking about - "pocketbook" - it's common here. We always called them "purses" or "handbags" or "should bags". Not a pocket or a book...

IndianaKat, My DF often used "gaum" as meaning anything that was messy, as in something dropped or spilled on the floor; I guess children often messed around and left gaum behind them. Sometime ago I searched through dictionaries with different spellings trying to find out what the word meant. Sure enough my DF was referring to a mess that someone had made, and the preferred spelling was gaum.

I don't know why but I recognized the word mullens as some kind of green plant/weed? Not sure of the correct spelling though; don't know if it is edible.
