Trane 14XLi heat pump thermostat settings

I have a Trane XL14i heat pump, the Trane XR 90 gas furnace and am using a Honeywell Vision Pro IAQ for the stat.

I've noticed that the aux heat element comes on (displayed on the stat) at about 40-41 degrees outside a.m. temperature. I think that is too high. Is there a way to drop that down at the unit (is there even a setting on the unit?). Looking for answers for those who know.

I don't have a manual with the XL14i. Builder had put in a builder grade heat pump and that wasn't part of the deal. It was replaced but I realized I didn't get a manual. Will try looking again on Trane's site.

how do you know it was a builders grade? and what is the difference?

The switchover temp is probably a function of your IAQ thermostat which the pros love. Do you have the manual for the t-stat? I would start with 32 degrees and see how it goes. The balance point is a function of heat pump size and house construction. The economic balance point is a function of fuel costs.

I got my system (Trane XE1000 Heat Pump with Aux. Heat) up and running with the new thermostat. While the aesthetics are much better and the programming is much easier than my old thermostat (CT3611), one thing that I noticed this AM is that this thermostat seems much more likely to kick in the Aux Heat. I have a 2 system house with a gas furnace in the basement. I'd like the heat pump to be much less aggressive with turning on the aux heat and rely a little more on the gas furnace to help bring the temperature up in the house. I found a setting (580 or 680) which states adjusts an "aggressiveness" factor for the aux heat but it still seems to kick on quickly. My old thermostat had a feature called something like adaptive heat recovery which calculated how long it took to heat the house back up and adjusted itself to just turn on earlier if it takes longer to warm the house. Granted, I didn't sit around the house all day watching the thermostat to count the hours the aux heat was on or off, but it seems like it was less. Does this new thermostat do the same thing in terms of trying to minimize aux. heat use? Is it just a matter of time before the thermostat learns my house and heating patterns? Does having the external temperature sensor help? Thanks, David

I personally have no problem with a customer following me around. I prefer to educate them on certain items they can do themselves. A little communication goes a long way to make a user feel warm and fuzzy as long as they don't get in the way. I have clients that only need me or one of my techs. to come around every 3 years or so to do real maintenance and checks. The residential maintenance agreements do help me keep technicians busy during gaps in the schedules. I actually have clients who want someone to come out and change their filters. Most are elderly or afraid to touch anything. We usually try to schedule those when a tech. is going to be passing by and we can do it gratis if the customer provides the filter. It's amazing how that "value added" service has helped business. But as you can see, for some people those maintenance agreements are worthwhile to some while others can save their money and do certain things themselves. Of course, for commercial clients, it's cheaper for them to buy an agreement than it is to hire someone full time to do it. And what's great is they can call the shop, ask questions and if the office Administrator can't answer a question (she does great), a tech. will call back. Even many handy types buy the agreement just to have resources (we also sell parts). These extras have allowed me to pretty much lock in whole neighborhoods.

schmidt first to answer your last post. unless this is an emergency, I would want an R-410a refrigerant HP with matching coil. Your situation is not as simple as it might appear. several questions. 1.your existing AC condenser is three tons? and sometimes at extreme outside temps it does not cool adequately? Pls confirm 2.What is model, size, apprx age of existing furnace? 3.And the blower motor's rated size? Very important. You will have problems if you go up in size with a 3 1/2 ton HP with a furnace that has only a three ton rated blower motor. I hope you realize that with the XL14i or XL15i you will not achieve its rated eff/performance potential with a mismatched non var speed furnace. Anyone who says otherwise is simply blowing smoke. If you go from a three ton to a 3 1/2 ton, your ductwork has to be sized correctly for good airflow. This should be verified. Trane HPs while very reliable but are light in heating BTUs for its rated size-all but the XL15i. Just so you know. For me, the XR13 or XR14 HPs in R-410a would be better choices than the XL models unless you intend to replace furnace in very near future with a matching var speed model. There are good options other than Trane such as Carrier Comfort series HPs. IMO

sbilly several questions. this is your first winter in this home? why did you and when did you change thermostat? what brand/model did you install? post brand, model, size of HP system. your servicing dealer did a poor job of checking your system. He should run a defrost check, check refrigerant charge that might indicate a leak, and run system both in AC and heat mode. Auxilliary strip heat should have also been checked to see that they were operating correctly both in auxilliary and emergency heat mode. I have to admit that I am suspicious of your new thermostat just as previous poster suggested. depending on model, most Trane HPs have electronic demand defrost that eliminate nuisance defrost calls working off a timer. how has HP operated today? You might check several supply registers with a digital thermometer and take a couple of temperature readings. Air filter is regularly changed? post back. IMO

I know the original unit was builder grade (Trane XB 13)because it is the lowest grade Trane offers based on products listed on the web site. Specs are available there. The 14XLi gives me better cooling and much better heating. The 15XLi would have cost me $800 more but there was no gain in heating and only marginal better cooling. The heating specs are more important in my climate than the cooling.

I contacted the heating installer today and asked him some questions abou8t the auxillary heat. He said the gas powered aux unit (XR90) is designed to come on at 40 degrees. He said efficiency was the reason and price point on gas vs. electric at the colder temps. Seemed to make sense.

Also told me I could find new furnace filters (non-Honeywell) at Fred Meyer for about $19 instead of the $45 Honeywell 4 inch square jobbers. May not be quite a good but they would be essentially better than half price. I'll look tomorrow.

- You control the balance point changeover with the t-stat. 40 degrees is too high. What are your prices for electricity ($ per kw-hr) and gas ($/therm)? If you don't know this, you can't make a smart decision on changeover temp. Don't just listen to the heating contractor. He doesn't pay your utilty bills. Figure out what's best for you.

electricity rates: .0746 per KW and .0924 per KW, averaging to .0835 per KW. Gas rate: .7733 per Therm plus .3045 per therm delivery, totaling $1.08 per therm.

Checked the VisionPro IAQ booklet and I can't find anyplace in there about changing the set point, Garyg. I did notice a section on advanced functions with ascending codes (0120, 0130, 0165 and then jumping to 0280, 0320. Might need to experiment with that in the a.m.

Open to suggestions, here.

For the record, in April I paid .078 per KW and in November I paid .093 per KW (all useage and taxes). Just had a 13& price increase. Gas totaled $1.74 per therm in April for 17 therms plus delivery, taxes, etc. with a 48 degree average. November bill ran $1.86 for 10.62 therms at 50 degree average temp. Only two measurable months for gas.

- I would call Honeywell and ask. Since this is a "pro" thermostat, they may be hiding things from you.

If the t-stat doesn't control the change-over temp, what does? Where is it located and how is it changed?
