What white is good for cabinets?

We installed Emerald Pearl black granite tops and am thinking of painting outdated oak cabinets white and painting island cabinets black. Seems choosing the "right" white is key...pro's have told me only the "off whites" are in but I don't want anything yellow/beige, as our trim is all white and I think would clash. Also, nothing too bright white. Any whites to recommend (brand, color name/number)? Anyone have photos of a similar project?

Acadia White, by Benjamin Moore!!

Popular with designers for kitchen cabinets, very tasteful, off white but not at all yellow.

I just had mine painted with BM White Dove OC-17. I love it, it's not stark white and its not creamy and when I say creamy I mean towards the yellow side of white. I did alot of research for the perfect white and found that people (designers and people on this forum) loved it. Good Luck!

We ordered some sample doors from Barker doors to see the colors. One was Sherwin Williams Pure White and the other Dover White. They were both really great. The paint chip for the Pure White looked really gray but it's not gray at all when painted. BUT this could be because they use a catalyzed varnish [I think that's what it's called]. I'm not sure if paint looks different based on the type of paint that is used. We ended up using the Sherwin Williams Pure White and I love it. It's a very warm white, no gray/blue undertones, at least in our space.

I would just change the sheen unless you want more contrast. I would not use White Opulence in this situation because they are both too close but too different. It would be just "off" in that head scratching way. Now I do know White Opulence very well,as I've used it for all my trim and all the kitchen cabs in this house.

Simply White. I just did my living room walls with it. I originally used White Dove (and my room gets west light) but it appeared a little dingy looking. So I think for your bedroom, the Simply White would be a better choice. but feel free to get samples of each and try them out. They are very close. the white dove just appeared a tad 'duller' looking to me.

Okay! One thing I've heard is that because the enamel used for the cabinets differs slightly from the paint in the paint store, it may not be an exact match to a paint sample or paint chip from Benjamin Moore. Do you have a sample of the painted cabinet to use when choosing your countertop? In general, I don't think there will be anything wrong with Dove White and those countertops though!

I too have BM White Dove, but I was surprised how white this looks in my kitchen. I picked it out from a showroom but later learned that it looked different because we have a very bright home with lots of natural light.
I agree with ingrid in that it does not have yellow undertones.

Hi there. The "which white" question is asked quite frequently. You may want to do a search for some recent threads if you want more reading.

I used BM Simply White. It's not creamy like many folks think of creamy (yellowy), but it's not a stark white. White Dove was too gray with a sickly yellow-green undertone in my kitchen, but I considered it for my master bedroom walls.

The only way to know for sure which one is right for you is to gets some chips of the suggestions made here. Then pick a couple that look like good options. Buy a sample can of each color and try it out on the walls, sample cab, or huge board. Colors look different from one wall to the next and from one time of day to the next so take some time to live with them before you decide. Good luck!

We went with White Dove. If you looked at our cabinets you'd say they're white, not off-white. We have stark white tile and the two whites are different but look fine together.

I'm choosing a white, and it has to be Sherwin Williams. SW Alabaster comes up a lot. It's almost an exact match to BM white dove.

We have blue pearl granite and have BM Chantilly Lace on our cabinets. It is a nice crisp white.

Just wanted to second White Dove. We have White Dove for all trim in the house, and Acadia white for cabinets. They're both beautiful, and very similar.

I spent days trying to find the right white.
I truly believe it depends on your space, the lighting,
the time of day, the other elements in the room.
Don't be afraid to buy 10 samples and paint a piece of
wood in your space.

It took me forever but I fell mad for powdered Snow Behr.
BM matched this color. I love it. Soft like fallen snow
not pure white although my DH, kids and relatives
say "White? It is all the same!"

Thank you all for your kind replies and to breezygirl for urging me to dig deeper for similar threads...did so and found a few more comments. Very much appreciated! I will post "before and after" pix as soon as I pick the color and figure out how to post pix (which may be the hardest part!...tips?) Anyone else who replies with colors...thank you, as I will continue to research all suggestions.

To prove how different colors can look different in every house, SW Alabaster showed it's one tiny drop of red in the forumula by looking ever so slightly pink in my kitchen space. But others love the color!

We went with BM Gardenia.
It's more on the red side of white than the grey or yellow.
Some find it to be too pink but, for some reason, in our kitchen it looks like a warm white.

Boxerpups offers good advice.
Take your time and don't be afraid to try as many samples as necessary.
We probably went through 15 before making our decision.
Also be sure you sample the colors under differing lighting conditions.
Full daylight, cloudy skies, nighttime, etc.

WillTV, I love the BM Gardenia in your kitchen so much! I think when I checked out the color in my kitchen, the golden oak cabinets were bouncing off the sample I painted so it kept looking pink. Colors bounce off of other colors in the room. But that white is perfect for your kitchen. I love your kitchen so much.
