I use Fresh and clean on my Yorkie and he smells so good and it lasts a long time, they also have cologne too! I was able to find it at Petco. Its what his groomer uses, my little guy can get pretty stinky!

Did you see the dry shampoo for dogs recipe posted recently?? I'm going to try it out. Sparky smells bad after sunbathing outside in the Florida sun. You would think a black dog would burst into flames! He lays on one side, then the other, then upside down, then time to come in to the AC.

Be sure to keep his ears clean!

I liked the dry shampoo myself. My dog was stinky and I had to do something. When he finally got a real bath, he smelled like a wet dog.!

Izzi only gets groomed about once a month and not because she is stinky. I do not do it. Some dogs should not be bathed often and she is one of them. If she were stinky, I would bathe her. So I don't know what to tell you about "stinky" dog :) Izzi is a Pomeranian.

I bathe my Chi in baby shampoo and don't use conditioner on her. My Border Collie goes to the groomer every 3 weeks and I have no idea what she uses, but he smells great when he gets home! Have you thoroughly checked his skin to see if he has a skin lesion?

My B.C. developed a foul odor recently and I discovered a nasty scab at the base of his tail. I took him to the vet and he gave me a medicated spray to put on it. I used it one time and it's already healing.

Yes, I have seen the dry shampoo recipe but worry about it causing Maxwell's skin to dry out. I don't think I would add any oils to his skin that would get on my carpet. And, no, he does not have any skin lesions or anything along those lines. He is just one with stinkiness. Our lab mix does not have that odor. Both are indoor babies so it's just a smell that is normal for him.

Right now I am using a super deodorizing shampoo, lemon verbena bergamot by Top Paw. Until this one I have tried several different oatmeal shampoos.

I think I will try the Fresh and Clean that Shell uses since she has a stinky guy, too. But the name sounds familiar so I've probably tried it already. LOL

As a side note, concerning those essential oils.... where do you find them? I looked on Michael's website and they don't list any. The oils I have found locally says not to come in contact with skin.

Growing up I lived my whole childhood outside of the states. Anything we had we had to order.. JCP, Monkey Wards, Sears, etc. I HATE ordering online. I like to see what I'm buying and have it in my greedy little fingers when I pay for it! LOL

Try a health food store for the essential oils. You use such a tiny bit it won't hurt. It's not to be ingested, just for a scent in the powdery stuff. 3-5 drops or so.
I order mine from ebay. Or you can get some lavendar buds then put them in a blender to make into a fine powder.

shell - Petsmart has Fresh and Clean with a Golden retriever on the bottle. Is that the one you use? I believe I may have used that before.

joann - how often do you use the dry shampoo? I think I may prefer the dry lavender buds if I had access to some. :)

Yes, thats the one, it has Arm and Hammer baking soda in it too.

We have three Goldens at the moment, and we usually have more. Just use Mane and Tail, cheap and available at WalMart.

If you are worried about dry skin, never bath more than once a month. That'll dry the skin and hair terribly.

sushipup - i remembered that you breed and show Goldens and was hoping you would chime in. So the question for you is... would you agree that Goldens have a certain odor? I have considered the Mane and Tail but that just sounded too easy. LOL

I can't answer. I have multiple Goldens and have for years, so my nose is probably affected. But I've never heard other Golden people say that. Ever. Now, dogs with oily skin like Poodles or Schnauzers smell, IMHO. There's a dandruff-y skin condition that some Goldens get, but I am not aware that it has an odor either, altho it might--my experience is limited.

So, no, I've never heard that Goldens have a certain odor, and that comes from many years experience.

Be sure that your dog's ear are clean. Yucky ears definitely smell. I use 99% hydrogen peroxide with a tablespoon and a half of powdered boric acid dissolved in it. (Keep tightly capped!) Clip excess hair from around the ear and use the solution on a cotton pad to clean the ear.

We don't have dandruff or dirty ears but I am heading to Walmart tomorrow for Mane and Tail. My mom will be so happy for the trip. :)

DH thinks I don't bath well in the winter because of limited space in the shower. I say I do, but, whatever.

Our minilabradoodles use shampoos by Tropiclean. Its a natural oatmeal shampoo that does not contain soap, therefore it will not remove the flea treatments that we have to use in Florida. Amos' skin is more sensitive so we use the medicated tea tree one on him and Andi gets the Papaya one. We could probably get by with using just one or the other but have always used these. You can probably get them at a Pet store but I order things from KVVet and am really pleased with the prices and service.

We do bath weekly - in the summer they swim on the weekends so bathtime is after that on Sunday. In the winter, baths still are weekly. Amos gets stinky from his ears mostly - they are heavy and he has the hair inside.

Whe we decided to get two dogs instead of one, I made it clear they would have to be kept clean. They do get on the furniture and I can't stand dog smell. Our Brittany had that oily coat and no matter how often we bathed her,
she would leave an oily feel on her bed. We had to keep her off the furniture and our beds because of that.

Not being blessed with one of the four-legged variety ... I wondered whether you meant the ones that I put in my shoes.

I think Mane & Tail is buy one get one free in one of the drugstores ads-Walgreens perhaps. My teens use it.

sushipup - the solution I use has alcohol, boric acid, vinegar and iodine. That stuff was a life saver years ago with one of our dogs that had ear problems all the time. We were unaware of food allergies back then.

mboston - I remember seeing pics of your dogs a long time ago. Isn't one black and the other brown or tan? I would be afraid to bath my dog weekly because of drying skin but glad it doesn't cause a problem for your dogs.

You can buy mane and tail at farm stores, and here at the Dollar store. It doesnt work for my mostly Bassett, who is very stinky. I havent found anything that works for him yet, unfortunately. Hopefully, it will work for you.

My Wheaten Terrier Molly rolls in mud, has bad breath, everything stinky. So she goes to a groomer once a month for a trim,shampoo, ear cleaning, tooth brushing and toe nail clipping. I call her "Molly,Dog of Luxury".

Yes, Amos is black and Andi is apricot. It doesn't hurt them to be bathed once a week as long as you aren't using a detergent/soap product.

I have a boxer. Every other month or so he smells horrrrrible. For him it is a skin condition - oily, horrid. I have tried everything under the sun....

Your Golden was original bred to be a water dog...a bird hunter. Most water dogs have very oily hair/skin (Ask me about my oily boys, LOL) to help repell water and hold body heat. The oil will develop a rancid odor at times.

Each dog has their own individual odor too. Not to play favorites, but Harry has a wonderful smell. He smells like the open, grassy prairie. Sam - not so much. He's much more oily, and smelly, than Harry.

You don't want to bath a dog too much, but you do have to strike a balance between "clean" and "smelly." Sam gets nearly twice as many baths as Harry.

Bad breath can be a gum problem. Harry's due for another deep cleaning from the vet in a month. Sam doesn't seem to have the problem.
