Our son-in-law recommended replacing the "standard" registers we have for certain registers that have more non-restrictive air flow capabilities. We removed several of our registers and ran the a/c to see if there was any difference in cooling the rooms. There definately was. Does anyone know where we can get some registers without the adjustable venting "flaps" or just a more stream-lined design? We really don't need to put anything over the openings except that it looks terrible with the holes and ducts showing!

OK, now I know I am stupid. The magnet sheets would have worked fine except I have aluminum supply registers, and my "brilliant" ballon idea worked fine as well but deflated overnight. I guess I could try tape, or a solid grill (plate) replacement. I am now thinking about what y'all have said about the dampers and maybe furthering my zone system just a bit, can be done. Question: If I install the motors on the dampers I wish to open/close, is there a wireless controller available that will let me just close/open those dampers? That way I can just open and close them at the dampers when i want, but not have an expensive computer controlling the situation. I am aware of the cfm needs of the furnace and coil and closing just 4 of the 12 supply registers will be OK, ie: still able to push 1200cfm over the coil.

Sue36--You're not understanding Buehl's duct. The opening is in the floor, next to the wall. It's not spaced out from the wall where she could use a floor duct. The duct is not coming up into the stud cavity. This style of register is quite common here in the upper Midwest though they were new to me when I moved here from the south central part of the United States. My house has them & is 30+ years old. And it is the overwhelming choice for forced air systems in new builds. They looked weird to me for a while, until I got used to them. Now, I don't notice them because they're 'normal'. We've owned houses with both styles of registers. I prefer these because less dirt & stuff gets into the duct than what does with floor registers. And, there's no need to attach a deflector to them, either. Moving that opening out from the wall is a big deal if she has rigid metal ductwork. I can guarantee blood loss & depletion of one's French vocabulary. :) And for no good reason other than, to a few people, a minor aesthetic one. No one is going to notice that duct except for Buehl and only for a few days and that's because she is admiring her beautiful new floors. Everyone else is going to see the gorgeous floor, the pretty windows & what's outside the windows and the duct is going to disappear in the same way that outlets & switches do.

So, it looks like most of the air flow just goes out of the registers that are closest to the a/c unit. For starters you need to know how long the duct runs are. If those two registers with good airflow are closer to the air handler it makes sense why they get more airflow, the air travels in the path of least resistance. It also makes sense why that duct run farther away is weak, it is a long run and less air is going through that. The larger duct will allow more airflow due to less resistance. More air will enter the larger duct and it will have more push to it allowing it to travel a greater distance. Couldn't the issue be caused by too much air going out of the closest to a/c unit registers leaving very little left over for the last room? If so, wouldn't either smaller ducts to the other rooms or a damper to redirect some of the air to the problem bedroom solve this? Yes and no. If you damper the high airflow registers then the overall airflow available is reduced which may or may not affect your AC operation. Your AC needs a minimum amount of airflow to operate properly. In any case you need to inspect your ductwork as originally advised. Any further hypotheticals are a waste of your and our time. You need to know if the duct is messed up anywhere or if it is disconnected. Then you can go from there.
