Don't you just hate it when........

the waitress or waiter at a restaurant refers to you as "how are you "guys" this evening". I am 58 and my husband is 66 years old, is there not some other greeting they could use.

Just "how are you this evening" would please me.

YES! We hear "you guys" all the time, no matter where we go. Don't think much of it.

Isn't it just the cutest little ol' calico? I too love the perplexed searching, the increasingly aggravated whaming! and then the quick flee when the paper "gets" it back. Love it. Laughed so hard it brought tears to my eyes. Well duh (totally! kidding) Meldy, she was just making the paper look like computer paper, eating the chads so as to not leave the evidence. (((wink wink))) Murphy fangs his approval on most every piece of paper I am dumb enough to leave lying around, bills have been torn to shreds, and I say, me too bud!, or LF has painstakingly drawn a picture and Murphy gives it a chew of approval; dismaying to the little fellar.

Esh, you read me like a book! I spend a fair bit of time down in East Tennessee (my ancestral grounds), and try to get up to the Mountains whenever I can. I've always marveled at the sheer number of different species there, many of which have landscape potential. While we don't all live in misty mountain woods, I think that many of the plants could be grown with a suitable microclimate. Hobblebush grows in full sun in the mountains, yet it would scorch if planted in the full sun around here. However, I've had luck with many Northern species by finding protected spots with cool soil. Oddly, a lot of those heath bald plants are found in the New Jersey pine barrens and in bogs in the North - Go figure!

I fully realize that service people can't schedule time-certain since they don't know how long a service call will take. But today there's no excuse for them to not have a cellphone and call to give you a heads up that they will be there in 1/2 hr to an hour or whatever. Makes sense for them too so they don't go to a place and have someone not answer, whether they're not home, in the shower or whatever. I remember many many years ago service people asking to use the phone to call the next person to say they're on their way. It's a simple courtesy. I don't utilize people that can't give a better estimate than "sometime today". Back when I had cable installed it was the typical "cable time" Somewhere between 8am and 5pm. I told them that's not good enough and they had to narrow it down to am or pm. They wouldn't so I said OK, cancel the cable. Then they said they'd be there between noon and 2pm. Granted with a repair, especially a warranty repair, you don't have that leverage, but still, I'd do some complaining to at least get a call or something. I would go ahead and take the shower. Just put a note on the door that you're in the shower and to call you. Just have the phone, a towel and a robe handy. I have to applaud the plumber I hired to install my water heater. He was very courteous about calling. Almost too many times actually. I told him I'd be at home all day and not going anywhere so whenever is fine and he'd call every couple hours with an update. Really was nice to know what was going on and that there was a delay. Gave me the chance that if something came up I could run out for a few minutes. It's a good business practice for him to not waste his time and nice for the customer too.

I hope I'm not taking this thread off onto a tangent but, does it depend on where you are in the country or where that person is from? Greetings and customs vary widely. In the upper Midwest people seem more reserved. DW is from Texas (Galveston) and that's a whole 'nuther country. Examle: I was at a Wal-mart there early in the morning picking up 1 item. (I'm a 50ish white male) Standing in front of her cash register was a 40ish black woman. I walked up and said, "Are you waiting for me?" She replies in a very southern drawl, "Sugar, I been waiting for you my whole life." Now, I'm usually pretty quick on my feet but I was speechless. Up here, that said to the wrong person, could've been labled sexual harassment.
Just a random thought on the subject.

I'd much prefer, "How are you folks this evening?"

I kinda like being called 'Hon' anymore...lol

The reason I cringe when I hear that is b/c I think of a "guy" as being male. You folks, or y'all would just be fine.

I thought of the same with Ron. I lived in Colorado for 4 yrs and that's where I learned my English. They commonly use "you guys". When I came to Texas, the dentist picked it up right away and asked me "you didn't learn English here, where did you learned it?". It caught me by surprised so I asked, he said my accent and vocabulary were different. I guess, it was not of Texan's origin.

Here in Texas, they say "ya'll" and in Colorado, "you guys". Hah-hah... try saying "yes m'am and yes sir" to a New Yorker ;o) ... same concept.

"You guys" doesn't bother me at all. As a matter of fact, I use it myself. It sure beats ma'am.

I don't mind 'you guys' nearly as much as I mind the VERY common (around here) "YOUSE guys". Now, that one makes me cringe.

I am guilty of saying 'you guys' all the time.

As a waitress, I don't think you could possibly please everyone all the time!!

I don't like being called 'honey'....except by my DH. But, I don't let it bother me.

I have looked at a waitress with my "best questioning face" and then asked:" Do you mean me?". LOL

Told her, I thought she was talking to someone behind me. After all, I am not a guy! :)

I think HON, DARLING, SWEETHEART and all that is a bit much! Too personal IMO

Raised in Mn, you guys is alright with me, even though I'm not one, and ya'll is alright too. I've even gotton use to ma'am

Here in SW Pa., it's younz as in "how are younz doing?"..Not sure really how it's spelled or what it came from, but that's Pittsburghese talk.....

Never used to hear "you guys" here in Georgia. I think because it's so over used on tv it has now invaded just about all areas of the country. I personally hate it. What's wrong with "How are you?" or "What would you like to order?" are preferable. I don't want to be called "You guys" in a restaurant or anywhere. I'm perfectly happy with "you" or "y'all".
