You could disconnect it and close it manually until the repair guy came...like last night. Doesn't do you any good for today though.
I know what you're saying about the repair guy. I hate it when they say "somewhere between 8am and 5 pm"!

Linda, at the bottom of the garage door are two light sensors. They are there to prevent the garage door closing if something or someone is in the threshold. The ones for our door are about 6" off the ground and are black rectangular shapes attached to either side of the garage door.

You might want to check and see if these sensors have dust or dirt blocking them. This happened to us last summer and the fix was merely a wipe down with a damp cloth.

Probably worth a look-see.

It may be something more serious, but it is probably worth a check.

I fully realize that service people can't schedule time-certain since they don't know how long a service call will take. But today there's no excuse for them to not have a cellphone and call to give you a heads up that they will be there in 1/2 hr to an hour or whatever. Makes sense for them too so they don't go to a place and have someone not answer, whether they're not home, in the shower or whatever. I remember many many years ago service people asking to use the phone to call the next person to say they're on their way. It's a simple courtesy.

I don't utilize people that can't give a better estimate than "sometime today". Back when I had cable installed it was the typical "cable time" Somewhere between 8am and 5pm. I told them that's not good enough and they had to narrow it down to am or pm. They wouldn't so I said OK, cancel the cable. Then they said they'd be there between noon and 2pm. Granted with a repair, especially a warranty repair, you don't have that leverage, but still, I'd do some complaining to at least get a call or something.

I would go ahead and take the shower. Just put a note on the door that you're in the shower and to call you. Just have the phone, a towel and a robe handy.

I have to applaud the plumber I hired to install my water heater. He was very courteous about calling. Almost too many times actually. I told him I'd be at home all day and not going anywhere so whenever is fine and he'd call every couple hours with an update. Really was nice to know what was going on and that there was a delay. Gave me the chance that if something came up I could run out for a few minutes. It's a good business practice for him to not waste his time and nice for the customer too.

Cindy the woman who answered the phone at the door store had me check the eyes to see if they were blinking. They weren't so she said it was probably something in the motor. She told me about being able to pull the rope to close the door but I have a "two car" door and she said they are very heavy.

Ahhhhh yep they are heavy! I thought perhaps a single light weight door. Ours is a double sized metal door that is insulated and has the metal backing over the insulation. It's a bear!

Linda do you have an inside wall button inside your garage. If you hold it in and don't let go does the door go down and stay down? If it does that it is an eye problem and could mean that they are simply out of adjustment, a very easy fix you could probably do yourself. Do your sensors each have a light on them, or just on one? I'm the service manager for a garage door company, that's why I asked. I probably get at least a half dozen calls a day for this same issue. Usually I can help the customer fix it over the phone so he doesn't have to pay a service call. I would be happy to try and help if you want. Let me know and I'll shoot you my phone number.

Last fall my Sears Kenmore dishwasher broke. Took four scheduled repair appointments. One was for between 1 and 4. He showed up at six thirty. One was for between 1 and 4, he showed at three, but when I tried to run it it was still broken. I frantically called Sears and asked them to send him back. No. Then they needed parts, another delay.I had no dishwasher for Thanksgiving, so I stacked the dirty dishes in my backyard. Finally the fourth visit, he came and fixed it and it stayed that way. I remember it was just before Christmas and I was doing a lot of baking. I'd have hated to wash all those cookie sheets by hand.

The repairman arrived and used his ice chipper to clear ice from the rubber strip that is on the garage floor under where the door sits. He asked me if it was OK to remove the rubber strip. Now the door works just fine. He said in the spring I might want to get a new rubber strip as the ice had gotten under the old one.

Now tell us how much he charged for that!

DH is a fanatic about making sure when we shovel we don't let it fall "inside" the door. Our garage is heated and it will melt and the darn door will stick to it, break loose and jump around! LOL
