How do you choose your laundry products?
Comments (14)I used to bounce around on different detergents too. When I first got my washer 9yrs ago, the only thing available was Wisk HE. I didnt care for that scent at all, so I switched to regular name brand stuff and cut the usage. I didnt have any issues with it either, and I am NOT recommending anyone to use it either. I went to persil, had to order it, along with the color formula and shell out some serious money for it. I loved it! I remembered when I was a kid my mom used it in her TL and loved the light scent of it. It lasted me a long time, so I felt like for the price of it and the amount of time it lasted, I was no worse off than buying local name brand stuff, but I got tired of the mail order so back to Walmart I went. Ive used Arm % Hammer...not bad, for what you pay for it, but not really thrilled over it. Now there is a HE version, I havent tried it and doubt I will. After long term use of their product, I didnt care for the scent of the clothes when they came out of the washer...cant describe it to be honest. Same thing happened to me with Sears HE, though I think that is better than Arm & hammer. Ive used Tide, tide total care, loved it, but too expensive and sudsy. Im on gain now, and when it is gone...Im going back to Persil as I know it cleans and rinses better than ANYTHING else I have used. SO do powdered detergents clean better than liquid? I hear of emzymes in them. Does this mean Liquids do with out them? Since I mainly wash in warm and hot powder should have no issue with the dissolving facter. Any cold wash I do is on ATC at 77F unless it is summertime....See MoreHow many towels do you go through...
Comments (36)I also use paper towels in the kitchen. I have dishtowels that get used while cooking occasionally, and dishrags, that I use to wash dishes. But if I am washing my hands, or cleaning up the counter, or cleaning up after handling meat, etc, I use paper towels. Some judge it as environmentally unfriendly. But these are my personal thoughts: 1) Laundry also consumes resources (water, energy), and outputs wastewater into the system that must be handled. 2) I use choose-a-size paper towels, and I find that often, a half-sheet does the job. 3) It's healthier when cleaning up after handling meat. A lot of people use paper guest towels in their company bathrooms. That's something I have not really gotten into yet. But it is an idea to mull over. :-) This has been a VERY interesting topic!...See MoreHow do you use a hundred towels in 2 days?!
Comments (13)I forgot to mention I am paying them for these chores, hoping they learn that if you work you get paid. If you don't work you don't get paid. Lauren usually gets $1 of her $5 a week pay because she only does the dishes and none of her other chores. Some of them are so easy, like taking a feather duster and dusting all the wood in the house. How hard is that?! Apparently too hard because she won't do it. Alex does all his chores and does extra stuff for me, like carrying out the vegetable/fruit scraps to the compost bin. I gave him a raise to $6.00 a couple week ago. I'll continue to give him raises as long as he keeps doing what he's supposed to do. I got so tired of them complaining about the dishes piling up during the times when I work 3-4 12-hours shifts in a row. Having to do towels or other laundry is a big pain in the butt too when I need to come home, clean up and sleep for the next day....See MoreHow do you separate your clothes when you do laundry?
Comments (150)@Nancy in Mich - it's pretty hot here in Israel, and though the city I live in isn't humid (Jerusalem), other cities are pretty humid. I don't leave my washer door open, since our laundry room is so small that we'd have trouble opening up the door to the room if we did that. Sorry about your husband though - not sure I know how to convince him to ignore the tags :). @dadoes - I forgot about our washers heating up the water on their own. I will say that clothing gets a LOT cleaner with a European machine. When we first came here, I was astounded by how white my whites get. When my in-laws come they're always shocked by how clean my father-in-laws dress shirts get. They're all-cotton, fairly expensive shirts, and they come out looking brand-new. I'm not sure why there's a push for washing in cold water either. Our machines are very efficient - electricity costs more here, so they have to be. Honestly I can't even imagine washing towels and sheets in cold water. It feels so unsanitary. Maybe they're pushing it because washing in cold water doesn't get your clothes as clean... which means you have to buy new clothing/bedding earlier than you'd normally need to....See Moresshrivastava
