I've never been that way...I weigh my options and try to figure out if I really want to do something and try not to let others influence me.

I too hate to be told anything.

Youth here get a restricted licence to begin, including not to have teens in the car after midnight - and not drive the freeways.

They can do it ... but if they get caught, it's costly: licence suspension, plus major fine.

I'm inclined to swim against the stream, as well. I asked, while the war was ongoing, to be appointed as a missionary/relief worker to help people who'd suffered in the Korean War get back on their feet. The war finished while I was en route.

I was a farm kid who'd never travelled over 30 miles from home till age 17, for in World War II gas was rationed so we did only necessary travel, then Dad, with breathing problems, moved 1,600 miles to farm in a different region and was fortunate to enjoy good health for 40 years.

Travel to Korea entailed 18 days by ship, out of sight of land, which impresses on one's mind that this is a big old world that we live in. And the trip included a bonus of visits to the Philippines, Hong Kong and Japan, then a flight to Korea.

Son has done some of that sport parachuting, as well.

He hasn't died, yet.

Same here! LOL, my husband kept telling me he didn't like the idea of me riding my bike across the country. Well, at least, he didn't say to me not to do it. He knew better. :)

He did say, I don't like you to do this, and I kept telling him: Honey, you don't have to like for me to do this, cause I do!

and out I went, and did it.

When someone says 'you can't' I say 'wanna bet?'

This method is how my Dad used to challenge us so if I'm hard headed, opinionated and very much my own person, blame him.

I've used this approach on my kids too:
'this-this-this or this needs to be done before you can do this-this or this and I don't think you can get it done in time...'

The apple didn't fall far from the tree, eh? :-) I sometimes wonder how my parents survived some of the things I put them through and how I survived some of the messes I got into. Glad those days are over. Pass the ice cream.

I had a friend who married widower with 3 teen and preteen sons. She hated how they dressed and determined to get them into less wild surfer/teen wear. So she took them back to school shopping at their favorite surf shop, rushed in the door ahead of them, grabbed all the really wild stuff they would normally buy from the racks and declared she LOVED them and they just HAD to buy them. They came home that year with quite nice looking, more conservative surf wear for school. Smart mom.

I hate to admit it but I am a bit like that myself. I decided the year I was turning 40 that I would drive cross country from the West Coast to the East Coast and back again. I would visit all my friends and family in betweeen. Everyone told me not to do it. That it was too dangerous for a woman and a young child. That sealed the deal and I did it. It is one of my best memories. Even my son, who was 7 at the time, remembers it. I am very glad that I did not listen to all those who said I shouldn't do it.

You have to be careful with how you put things like that, even if you care about the other person's safety.

My BIL and his wife were moving from an apartment to a house. I, my wife, her other brother and the MIL / FIL were helping. At one point I could see the FIL sizing up the rather large TV, hesitating for a moment deciding wether or not to get another person to grab the other side. MIL chirps in with "Don't pick that up by yourself, Frank. You're too old!". That did it. He about threw his back out wrestling it down the steps.

It's all in the delivery!

I had an over-protective mother. If she feared something I was supposed to also. I know that contributed to my being a "wild child". That and just because I was born stubborn and tenacious. I'm still a bit like that. Tell me I can't or I shouldn't do something?

ntt hou, Mom tried that same tactic on me. She'd purposely challenge me just to try and get me to do something. It doesn't work that way. Gullible is written on the ceiling. ;-) You'll have to get your own ice cream.

re: teen drivers not allowed on freeways.

I guess freeways can sucker kids into speeding, but....

I *always* feel safer on a freeway than on any other type of road. Everybody's going the same direction (no oncoming traffic), there are no intersections, there are entrance and exit ramps, etc.

Yep.....count me in as someone who when is told that I CAN"T do something...makes it my lifes goal to do just that. Once My Mother-in-law told me I couldnt make Divinity like Grandma's cause it was just too difficult. Umm......i called gramma got the recipe and made the best dang batch of divinity I have ever had. Hubby agreed(although he knew what mom had said..and knows how I am..so he might have been skewed a bit)LOL
