*attaching* free-standing backsplash

Thanks to everyone who helped me think through our free-standing backsplash. We have decided to go with a textured ("rainy") tempered glass panel with aluminum channels. My main question is how to attach the channels to formica. I have been googling, and the closest I can find is installing shower doors.

Other questions: is it necessary to use a rubber sealant *in* the channel? DH thought we could just slide the glass into the channel and put a thin bead of silicone caulk where the two meet, on the outside. I also thought it would be a good idea to apply caulk along the bottom of the glass, sealing it to the formica, yes? It won't exactly be pretty, but it will help our current situation and will go away when we do our remodel someday.
