There's very little difference in efficiency between one dryer and the next. That's why dryers don't have Energy Guide stickers and there are no EnergyStar-rated dryers.

I'd bet the chances are 99% that your exhaust ducting is clogged. I don't mean just the length of flexduct that may run between back of the dryer and the wall ... the ENTIRE length of the exhaust must be checked and cleaned, from the wall opening behind the dryer through to where it exits outside the house. Replacing the dryer won't fix your problem unless the exhaust obstruction is also cleared ... and since clearing the obstruction will fix the problem anyway, there's likely no need for a new dryer.

Good suggestion, but that's not the problem. My husband cleaned out the hose a year ago-it's clear....and I should've mentioned it always took 'forever' to dry my clothes, even when the dryer was brand new. Guess my washer hasn't been too efficient in spin drying my loads. I wound up buying a GE profile duo today.

Well ... as I explained, there's usually more to the exhaust ducting than just "the hose" between the dryer and wall ... but if you're sure it's all clean and clear, then I suppose that part is done.

How's the new dryer's performance? Which model did you get? There are several labeled as GE Profile. I count 7 dryers listed on GE's web site.

The GE washer you listed in another thread spins at 700 RPM. Your Whirlpool did 640 RPM, so that's not a huge difference.

Sorry, when I meant "hose", I meant entire length....all the way to where it exits at outside my house. I read your post to DH to be sure that wasn't the problem.

I won't get the W&D until next week, but the model I got is DPSR610EGWT-a basic dryer, no bells or whistles just like my new washer, but it seems to have everything I need. My husband thought the lint trap was cheaply made but I liked the fact it was easy to pull out unlike my current long whirlpool lint trap (which tends to spread lint all over the top of the dryer everytime I clean it.)

The salesman insisted my clothes will comes out "damp' from my new washer which will be a significant improvement from my whirlpool. Time will tell. I'll have to report back in a couple of weeks. I did a search on this forum but didn't find much info on these 2 specific models.

My former dryer was doing like yours too, though my husband cleaned it thoroughly (even taking the back off), plus cleaning out the full length of the hose. He did that at least three times in a month. We checked on what it would cost to repair it, and it was almost as cheap to replace it -- plus, I had always had a problem with the 'handle' to the lint filter breaking.

My washer had also seen its better days, its repair cost was also way too high to warrant putting more money into it, so I came here (among several other websites and IRL sources) to research washers and dryers.

I ended up buying a Maytag Bravos washer and dryer, and I couldn't be happier. My family is large and I needed a huge capacity washer -- mine is 4.6 cu ft and holds three times more laundry than my former one. Yet it uses FAR less water and energy than my old washer.

Whereas I used to wash 7-10+ loads per week, I now wash 3-4 loads weekly, at most. The dryer holds it all well too (7 cu ft), and both of them do a fantastic job on my laundry. All the features I needed are on both. I didn't get steam in either because I don't need it. They are both made much better than my old w/d. I have never been happier.

I hope your GE set is as good to you as my Maytags have been to me. :-)

The Maytag Bravos was our second choice. My husband would've preferred the Bravos as he's always impressed with more "features". Honestly, I didn't do alot of research before I went, just listened to my salesman's seemingly objective sphiel. It was tough to refuse the price of the GE, espcially with the rebate; it came out to nearly half the cost of the Bravos. Of course, I opted for the extended warranty on both W&D in case my lack of research came back to bite me in the butt. I think I was also drawn to the GE bacuse they looked so user friendly to my non mechanical mind. Not that the Bravos wasn't, but they resembled ranges to me, like from the 60's era. I'm sure I would've adapted to the different look however, but the GE price without the fancy features (I didn't need) was so much more attractive.

Miele (in Australia) now has a domestic dryer that uses a heat pump system to dry the clothes rather than just a resistance heating element.

It should deliver a significant reduction in electricity use and Miele claim it makes a 46% saving over a regular condensor dryer.

Of course if you factor in the original purchase price you'd have to do a LOT of drying to re-coup the money you are saving on a 46% reduction of your electricity bill....but if you are looking for an efficient appliance for other reasons or are in the market for a top end dryer anyway it's probably worth considering.

Although I have to admmit I'm not sure if it's available in the US.

pensivern, I hear you on the price. We got our Maytag Bravos w/d set last year, during Maytag's promotional month of May -- I've also noticed that virtually every appliance maker offers huge discounts during Memorial Day weekend.

After HD's sale prices and rebates, we ended up paying less than we would have paid for any HE washer and matching dryer of any size. And of course I got all the features I needed. I am definitely one happy customer. :-)

I forgot to specify, we not only got a rebate from HD, but we also got rebates from Maytag -- plus free detergent. All of that really sweetened the deal, made it the best buy we could find.

Just wanted to say that I'm very happy with my new GE W&D. I'm amazed how fast my clothes dry (compared to my old whirlpool)....after only one cycle! I have noticed an increase in wrinkling however so I'm going to try the 'less dry' setting next time as opposed to 'optimal dry"

One other thing was disappointing however. Home Depot advertised purchasing this pair with a $100 rebate. Wouldn't you think this was a $100 in CASH?? Upon reading the very fine print, it said "$100 gift card". A call to the rebate center confirmed I'd be getting a home depot gift card, not cash.....which will be put to good use, but still, I thought the advertising was deceptive.

My junky old dryer started working so much better after I replaced my junky old top loader with a Bosch front loader washing machine. It spins the clothes so well after the rinse cycle that there's very little water left for the dryer to get out. We save a lot of electricity by not having to run such long drying cycles any more. I'm sure that this is not unique to the Bosch. From what I've read many new front loaders do a better job spinning the extra water out of laundry.

pensivern, our HD rebate was a gift card. Dear hubby used it on a lawn mower, which he really needed, so that was not a problem for us. Our Maytag rebate was a check. Free detergent rebate comes as coupons which can be used at any store.

usually if it's a cash rebate, it'll say "Cash Rebate" and show a picture of Ben.

Also, it may be cheaper running a gas Dryer, if gas is available in your house and if gas is cheaper than electric (usually)
