2nd Floor W/D - Landlord Problems

We moved into a just-renovated, very nicely done three story house in Boston. It's divided into two apartments: a first floor and an upstairs (2nd and 3rd floors).

The landlord had originally intended on selling the units as condos, but for some reason decided to keep it and rent the two apartments out. Our unit has W/D hookups in the 2nd floor bathroom. When we asked the landlord if we could put in W/D units, they said no because they "didn't want the liability."

We are upset by this and are wondering how we can resolve this issue with the landlord. Are they being unfair? How can we come to a middle ground? We are willing to do anything, money is not an issue.

Thanks!
