If you have a local SEARS, watch the video on why MOST of the new front loaders aren't recommended for any floor above the basement. I know many people who have them on other floors without problems.

I had a Maytag stacked washer/dryer in the late 1980's on the 2nd floor condo. There was no problem- no shaking/vibrating. I assume it was also reinforced. The set was a 'smaller', but full sized, if that makes sense. Very, very good set.

Just think about apartments- they have washer/dryer sets on 2nd/3rd floors without problems.

but wasn't that a TL washer ?

the issue is that with new construction nowadays, the floors are not that strong. A stacked pair will weigh close to 300 lbs (at least over 200lbs) concentrated in a small area.

Reinforcement usually means putting another layer of 5/8" or 7/8" plywood screwed directly to the floor joists where the washer is to be installed. Use exterior quality (waterproof glues). You can paint it, or tile it to make it prettier.

The other thing you should have is a drain. If there is an outside wall, you should put the washer in a pan and run a pipe from the pan out through the wall. If there is no drain or you cannot install one, you should still put the washer in a pan just in case.

I called Whirlpool and they gave me more info. They recommended putting a glass of water on the floor and jumping around it to make sure the water does not shake or spill. We also talked to the builder and they actually agreed to install the Whirlpool Duet W/D with steam for cost!
I am happy since I was a little worried about the LG's since a friend of mine has had a lot of repair issues in the 1 yr she has owned them.
There will be a metal drain pan with pipe installed by the builder as well.
