Tips on OUTSTANDING smoked ribs!!

Good Morning,

I hope my grilling experts can give me some advice. I have never attempted to smoke ribs, in the past we have tried Boston Butt for barbecue and it turned out wonderful. We have an electric smoker and as far as the barbecue we are very satisfied. Not sure about making ribs though. From what I have read I do know to remove the membrane. I'd like meaty ribs so I don't think that's the babyback. In making barbecue in the past I have put a dry rub on the meat. When the meat is done it looks charred, well most of that hard crust comes off when I'm picking through the meat and getting all the fat. I don't want the ribs to be charred. Do I need to use another rub for this? Is it true to use a barbecue sauce right at the very end? I do like the hickory flavor so I will use hickory chips. Not exactly sure either on how long to smoke. I want the meat to fall off the bone. Thanks for your help.
