Will knobs and pulls help me like my oak cabinets? What size?
Comments (30)I came across this post and just wanted to add that in our old house, we had the cheapest of cheap builder grade 80's oak cabinets that were a terrible shade of orangish. DH, like a lot of men, has an issue with painting "the wood!" "You'll never get the same finish!" Well, actually, yes you can as long as you use a good oil based paint. But anyway...so we comprimised and picked up some "Liquid Sandpaper" from Home Depot or Lowes (can't remember which). You put it on with a rag, wait a bit, and then you can apply a new stain--though it should be darker or brighter (cherry) to cover whats there. It works by opening up the surface and allows the stain to penetrate into the finish...then after 2 hours it "closes" back up and holds in the stain. It took us all of a night to do the entire kitchen. We took the doors off and all the hardware of course to get the best finish on the door fronts. Total cost...about 30.00 with plenty of leftover product. And we too had what looked like "wood paper" on the sides of the cabinets but it took the stain just as well as other areas. I believe thats because the stain doesn't actually get all the way down to the wood, but rather gets encased just under the top coat. But I'm not sure, because it certainly looked like the cabinets had always been the new color--the wood grain was apparent and the finish retained a beautiful shine after. I'm not saying its necessarily a permanent fix but the ease and inexpense created instant gratification. And in our new house when we remodeled the kitchen...it was off-white cabinets or else! :) They are just so timeless......See Moreall pulls or knobs and pulls?
Comments (8)I just posted this on another thread! I put knobs on all doors & the 6" pullouts flanking my cooktop. I put drawer pulls on all drawers & the trash pullout. My drawer pulls are 4" on center. The knobs are spaced 1" in from the side and on the upper cabinets 3" up from the bottom edge, while on the base cabinets 3" down from the top edge. For the drawers, I put one pull on drawers = 30" wide. The pulls are centered vertically. Horizontally, when there's one pull, it's centered; where there are two knobs, they vary...the ones on the 36" drawers are 8" from the edge, on the 33" drawers they're 7-1/2" from the edge, on the 30" drawers they're 7" from the edge....See MoreBin pulls, bar pulls, and knobs! Comments (17)Since many people on this board are building a "forever house" and care about aging-in-place, I vote against knobs. As you age, they'll be the most problematic to pull open. The easiest thing for aging would probably be a wiiiiiiide staple-type pull or similar. These have the added benefit of doubling as a towel holder. However, I do agree that I'd hit my hip or catch my clothes on them. And they're more modern-looking than I want. Between cup pulls and handles, I don't see a great deal of difference in functionality. I vote for a combination of them: cup pulls on the lower drawers, handles on the upper cabinets. Another question worth mentioning: What type of material ages well? In my kitchen, I have antique brass, which has been in place probably a decade. It still looks great. No visible wear, and they weren't expensive items in the first place. In my bathroom I have builder-grade junk: I don't know what material it is, but it's a goldish tone painted white on the front (okay, perhaps it was white all over when it was new around 1970?). It's 100% functional, not a single handle is in bad shape. The look is quite outdated, but no complaints about the function....See MoreHow do I size pulls for large drawers? Use knobs on all doors?
Comments (4)You can mix pulls and knobs. As for size I look for pulls that come in different sizes so that I can adjust with drawer width. In first picture I have a pantry which is 35” wide - with 9” pulls vs the coffee station which is 25” wide has 7” pulls. The 7” is also on upper cabinets. The cabinet over the refrigerator is 14” tall so I used knobs. These came from Top Knob so I order the larger pull and knob as sample at $5.00 each to check size. Then order the balance from Build.com who had a better price at the time....See More- 12 years ago
