My microwave just pooped out after just 22 years....sigh

I sure miss it...wanted some leftover mashed potatoes. At least I got the dressing warmed b4 it went out.

It has been a great little microwave on a little shelf built just to fit it and keep it off the counter. I'll likely not be able to find one to fit the space this one is in...sigh...but I will try.

My processor went out yesterday, after about 25 years. I looked for one today, but don't know if I'm going to like the Black and Decker as much as my old GE. For one thing,it's bigger, and I don't have a lot of space for those gadgets.

I have only discovered this forum recently, so not at all aware of the poor reviews on Viking ranges. I bought my 30" dual fuel Viking range over 10 years ago, and it will be going into my new kitchen. I initially had some trouble w/ the heating element. It was under warranty and Viking covered all the replacements and extended the warranty. It's been fine otherwise and I bake alot. I am very pleased w/ the gas cooktop. Since I have had a good relationship w/ Viking as a company and the product itself, I have nothing bad to say about them. I have a bottom freezer KA fridge , that I estimate at 8 or 9 years old. Never had ANY issues w/ it. LOVE the bottom freezer and will probably always have that arrangement. I have a Bosch DW less than 1 year old that I am very pleased with. This kitchen is open to our family room and quiet operation was high on the priority list. We barely hear it running, just a faint swishing sound . I DO pre-rinse, so have no problems w/ dishes coming out clean. SO in addition to my newer DW, the other appliances are going into my new kitchen. In time I suppose my Viking will die, and I will cross that bridge when the time comes. Beside the Viking I am not brand motivated. Bought the KA fridge due to bottom freezer and good pricing. The Bosch DW was a no brainer. My favorite appliance store was selling a few floor models and I got it for about half price. Good luck in the selection process. I know from my experience in making decisions for my remodel I wavered thru parts and was decisive in other aspects. Sometime you just have to stop the research, decide and then live w/ the decision.

Ha ha. Three years later, reviving this thread again. I searched THS for well water smelling like sulphur and this thread brings back memories of much worse smells. Around the time this thread started (wish I'd seen this then!) we were re-doing our master bathroom. One of the guys would arrive in the morning and do a #2 in the other upstairs bathroom which was the only one with a shower at the time. We HAD to use it to get ready for work! He NEVER used the fan. It smelled HORRIBLE. He knew we had a powder room downstairs. The thing is, my husband and I kept complaining to each other, but we didn't say anything to this guy. We counted the days until he'd be gone, and we made sure someone was already in that bathroom when he got to our house, so he couldn't use it. I know it's hard to talk about these things with people. But we gotta say something to these people. That's really the solution. And contractors should think about their customer service in all aspects. Our "business" always smells worse to others than to ourselves, you know! So many years later I think of this contractor and I immediately think of his poop. I'm sure that's not the impression he wanted to leave? I admit I never noticed anything about their handwashing. Our bodies have how many trillions of bacteria already in us and on us? I know we might like to think of our bodies as sanitized temples, but I'm not sure there's anything else in my house that's grosser than what's in my own body, to be honest. Well, uh the litterbox ... speaking of smells I need motion-activated fan for that!

scrappy25 -- the window came as a single piece, so I assume that's a triple casement? The cost for just the window was around 3,000. But of course, there was a fair amount of construction to open the wall, fix the brick, put a steel beam in to support the wall over the window, build out the window box, insulate the window box, and put a little roof on the window box... Those expenses I'm not sure about, and in any case, they'd depend a lot on where you live, how much your contractor charges, whether you're doing it yourselves, etc. Oh, and the wand is specific for Marvin windows, but the company that makes it has heads for other brands of windows too. I'm glad you like the window - it was a big splurge, but it makes me happy every day! andreak100 -- thanks for the nice comments about my kitchen -- I know white kitchens don't appeal to everyone :-) Here are the measurements: over the refrigerator, the cabinets are 13.5"; over the counter, the cabinets are 40"; over the microwave, the cabinets are 25.25". (Just as a side note, our fridge is unusually tall.) The opening for the microwave is 15" tall. deedles -- thanks! That's a strange photo: the wood thing that looks like a rug is actually the end of the kitchen table. Some kind of optical illusion there!

I felt like using the slow-cooker yesterday, and a new recipe. I came across a Moroccan chicken recipe and gave it a go. It was very good! The raisins and apricots added sweetness and depth. I used 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts halves, and cut the ingredients in half. I posted a recipe on yesterday's "what's for dinner" thread. Slow-Cooker Moroccan Chicken 2 large onions, halved and thinly sliced 2 cups sliced carrots, 4 medium 3 lb chicken pieces, skin removed 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup dried apricots, coarsely snipped 14-oz can chicken broth 1/4 cup tomato paste 2 tbsp flour 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 1/2 tsp cumin 1 1/2 tsp ginger 1 tsp cinnamon 2 cloves garlic, minced 3/4 tsp pepper 2 cups hot couscous toasted pine nuts for garnish In a 5 to 6-quart slow cooker, combine onions and carrots. Add chicken, sprinkle with salt. Add raisins and apricots. In a medium bowl whisk chicken broth, tomato paste, flour, lemon juice, cumin, ginger, cinnamon, garlic and pepper. Pour over chicken. Cook on Low 6 1/2-7 hours or on High 3 1/2-4 hours. Serve in shallow bowls with couscous. Sprinkle with pine nuts.

Mine's about the same age as yours, Sue, and I know when it goes, I'll be lost till I can get somewhere to replace it. I cook up lots of dishes for fridge and freezer, and use microwave to reheat. I wish you good luck on finding just the right replacement.

I checked my handy dandy Readers Digest New Fix-it-Yourself Manual and see it could be one of several things.

faulty capacitor or diode-must discharge it b4 testing
faulty thermal cutoff-test and replace
faulty transformer or magnetron-have serviced

My processor went out yesterday
How did you know for sure it was the processor?
I don't even know of a Fix It shop I could take it to around here. It came from Sears originally.

I think that they are so affordable these days, it's probably better to buy a new one. Mine sits on my counter instead of the built-in shelf because I had to replace it and couldn't find a size to fit the "hole".

I had a Black and Decker under-cabinet mount microwave that died about a year ago. Found one almost the same size, but I had to drill all new holes in the cabinet to mount it. The new one is a G.E. Spacemaker. I believe GE owns Black & Decker. Everyone told me to get a microwave/vent combo that hangs over the stove, but I'm short (4'11") and I don't like lifting things over my head. I hope my current micro lasts as long as the first (29 years). If it does, I'll be 84. Yahoo!

I started letting my fingers do the walking by browsing on line for one to fit the 'hole'.

The 'hole' is 22 wide
13 deep
and 11 1/4 high

I think I may have found one but can't be sure. It says it is 10 long
15.6 wide
and 17 high
One of those dimensions has to be wrong. It cannot be 17 tall in comparison to the other dimensions...or maybe it is the wrong one pictured below. grrr...I want a new one NOW!

Oh, the jello was good. Orange with pineapple chunks and black walnuts and mini marshmallows. I ran out of Dream Whip to top it off.

My current life span on microwaves is about 6 months. I have gone through 3 in a short amount of time.

The one I have now works - occasionally. It shuts off when I try to melt butter. It must be covered with a lid, and even at that it shuts off twice before it melts.

Forget microwave popcorn. It just won't do it anymore.

Sometimes I just have to unplug it for a while. It won't shut off otherwise.

Nice huh? The last two (includes the one I am using now) have been GE. I will never buy another GE appliance EVER!

Not sure what I am going to get to replace this one, but I think I will look at Sears.

Don't buy anything from Wal-Mart.

Some places will back up their appliances for a year - Menards does around here. At least you have some recouse then.

Your new one will not last 29 years! That is for sure :) I hope it lasts 29 days! LOL
