Whats For Dinner #308

We had a simple beef stirfry last night. There was a power outage from about 12 to 3pm then the same thing from 9pm to 2:30am. No storms, accidents or anything else from what we could tell... Lucky to get dinner in!

All this talk about crab has me salivating for some... Phillips Lump is about the best I can find around here. Guess I'll do that one night soon.

Let's see, what have I made this week... Monday night was my version of Lemon Chicken... thighs browned then braised in lemon, white wine, chicken broth and herbs. Rice and fresh green beans to go with...
Tuesday night was soft tacos with homemade tortillas. Fresh strawberries.
Last night was Beef Brats off the grill and a fresh herb pasta salad, just my own creation.....

Trying to decide on tonight. It needs to be something that will go with fresh peas...Kim is picking up 20 lbs. that we ordered from a farm market near her work... Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow!

I didn't make the fried rice/zucchini. I got home and as I began decompressing (house to myself, ah the quiet!), I sat down with a glass of champagne. I later got up off the couch and made a slice of dark chocolate cheesecake with fresh raspberries and mexican chocolate sauce drizzled over it, to go with the champagne. Pure decadence. Wonder why I'm overweight??? At least I enjoyed getting here! I promise I'll be healthier tonight.

    LG LWS308 Wall Oven Review

    Q

I have (I believe) the exact same wall oven; this is my second one and I am about to get the third. The first one was defective--it happens sometimes and while it took a while, I was able to get a replacement from LG. The one I have has been in my kitchen since October of '09. However, about a month ago, my racks started falling off the guides. Everyone thought I was hallucinating but fall they did. They are now about 1/4" too narrow for the cavity of the oven. I called LG, they told me which repair service to call and they came Thursday. It is not my imagination, the racks no longer fit--the culprit? The self clean cycle. Who knew? I mean it is an integral part of the oven, right? Well, that is what caused it--LG is not the only manufacturer to have this problem, if you google the problem, you will see others who have had the same thing. So now am waiting to see if LG will make it right and replace the oven at no charge. I am already into it for a service call fee which I paid. But even though it is out of warranty, it does seem as though this is something that is their fault, not mine. Wish me luck and think twice before turning on that self clean feature cause if it happened to me, it could happen to you. I would guess that I have used it 3-4 times a year each year and it was only after the last time I used it that the problem occurred.

I had a box that was even larger and deeper -- housed 4 fluorescent fixtures. When we took it down, there was minimal patching needed on the ceiling for nail holes, but we did need to texture and paint. That is not beyond the average person's skill level -- just needs some instruction, and if you need practice, the texture comes off easily before painting. That said, if you really are going to remodel in a year or two, you'd be amazed how quickly that time can fly and how little you will care about updating now if you put the time and energy into researching, planning and thinking about how the kitchen works and should work for you. We went 4 years and got pushed by dying appliances, but we made much better decisions by taking out time. If you hope for a year or two but think it might be longer and you really aren't comfortable with the kitchen or having people over as it is, would be miserable, etc., then I think a little updating might be a good idea. It might also be a good way to learn some new skills and test what you can do DIY or test some ideas for what you think you would like in the new kitchen. You have new appliances -- you might find a little updating will take you a lot further than you thought.

I'm back from dinner. It was great visiting with our snowbird friends and we talked for over two hours. We were neighbors when we both lived in the boonies and they moved back to Ohio shortly after we moved. We went on a cruise together with others from the neighborhood and had so much fun with them once. So now we e-mail and get together once a year :-( Dinner--not so good. I ordered the fettucini alfredo with bacon-wrapped sea scallops. The salad that came with it was very good, the scallops cooked just right but the alfredo was disappointing, to say the least. It was a big plate of angel hair pasta with a huge glob of alfredo sauce out of a jar. Ick, ick, ick! What could be easier than alfredo sauce? It's just a little butter, cream, garlic and lots of parmesan. They had little rolls that came with the salad that looked a little like those biscuits at Red Lobster, but were floury and dry. Now I remember why we don't like to eat out. Harry had fried oysters, baked sweet potato and hush puppies. He said on the way home it wasn't very good, but if it's dinner time I swear that man would eat plastic! Guess we won't be eating there again any time soon!

Dixie, thanks to you I now have a craving for crab. If Matt wasn't here for a couple of days I might give in to that craving. Unfortunately, he doesn't like any seafood.

Nancy, you have been eating well.

Rob, I like your style. Champagne and Chocolate cheesecake. Sounds perfect to me.

I grilled a small prime rib for dinner last night.

Sides were roasted new potatoes with garlic and rosemary and

    grilled zucchini and red peppers.

Lots of amazing food here. Everything looks so good!
The strawberries, wow! A, you picked a lot!

Foas, there used to be a great restaurant in Huntington called the Iberian. I think that is the last time I had Paella. Yours looked delicious. I don't eat the clams, etc. but I love the shrimp, chorizo and chicken.

Lou, you get the prize for the sweetest , tenderest pic. The baby is just beautiful!

Busy times here since Memorial Day. Events, visitors, etc, and of course all the gardening and outdoor work.

Love the look of the Caponata on the mafalda.... I like caponata on almost anything! And Ann - that is the best looking BBQ I have seen in ages. It looks FANTASTIC! I love the crispy bark.

This was dinner a couple of nights ago - orichetta with shrmp, broccoli, red peppers, garlic bread, salad and a great Orvieto.

Tonight is going to be monteray jack and left over taco fixins sprinkled over tortilla chips and made into nachos with Swim Team Dessert party stuff for dessert....

Everyone's food looks so good...Lou your family pics are great.
    Tonight we had
Broiled Halibut steaks with a herbed butter on top, broccoli, and rice pilaf.

Some friends gave us the halibut, he works with a guy that loves to fish but won't eat it.

Seems like mussels are getting attention lately. My wife had a milestone at work this week so I decided to make a nice dinner. It was based on some ingredients that were on a really good sale, but when I went to buy them of course they were all sold out. Of course by then I was committed, so shopped different stores and this lobster, scallop and mussel dish cost a small fortune. But it sure was good. (Even if my mussels weren't near as nice as Jim's catch!)

FOAS, that is my kind of meal! Actually, it's way better than what I usually have. :-)

I've just been enjoying the wonderful recent posts and lurking until I can come up with something photogenic. Talk about photogenic! Caponata, orecchiette, prime rib, roasted new potatoes. There is some seriously good cooking going on here.

Linda, cultivate a friendship with that guy who likes to catch halibut but won't eat it. That's the kind of friend we all want.

    Jim

FOAS, you have one lucky lady and congrats to her on her milestone.

Hopefully I'll get back to posting here soon, for some reason or other I'm really off cooking. Not so much eating, just cooking!

Best meal lately .....fresh pan fried Ontario perch, early new potatoes and peas with strawberry shortcake for dessert! I love it when the local stuff is in.

    Kathleen :
Thank you for you compliment on the family Photo's.
The deer haven't been eating my plants since I've been spraying them with my Garlic, Egg mix.

    Linda:
Thanks for your compliment too !!!
Your Halibut meal looks great, even smells good from here.
Could I have the phone number of your friend who, likes to fish but don't eat them.

    FOAS:
You did it again!!! Looks good.
    I'll catch up one day.

Think I'll go up to Jim's and clean out all the Lobster traps and his clams.

I cooked everything from the freezer tonight.

Dinner last night was cubed steak with milk gravy, fresh corn on the cob, and a roasted ratatouille made from local organic eggplant, purple bell pepper, red onion, zucchini, garlic and roma tomatoes. I discovered a new to me source of flour and cornmeal, Midstate Mills in Newton, NC, so I made biscuits from their restaurant-style Formula L Biscuit Mix. I also bought some Tenda-Bake Cornmeal mix for cornbread and corn muffins. Both products are very good and may be found at your local (dreaded) Wal-mart or online.

Congratulations to your wife, FOAS, that meal would sure be worth a milestone of any type. I used to think that mussels weren't worth the work, but now I love them.

ruthanna, I'm so glad those are not olives. (grin)

I had a kind of odd week, Elery's been painting the house and Thursday he didn't feel well, so he ran over to the doctor's office while I went to work. They promptly did a stress test, which the doctor read as "positive" and said he thought there were blocked arteries. An ambulance ride to Grand Rapids to the heart center, and they did a heart cath on Friday. All clear, not a problem, and he's back home, but it was kind of tense.

Anyway, Friday night we got home about 7 pm from the hospital and we hadn't had lunch or dinner since the heart cath was at 12:30 and he had to lie flat for at least 4 hours. I made a quick dinner of baked potatoes, potato and parmesan crusted sole and home canned collard greens.

Yesterday we decided to pick sweet cherries, 30 pounds of them.

The kids came over last night and we played in the pool, so we did hot dogs and burgers on the grill with some fresh beets I picked up at the local farm market, MagicLand.

Today we checked fence because I have a rental bull coming tomorrow, so we had a quick breakfast of bagels and cream cheese, went to the farm and was home by 1 pm. I mixed up some dough and Elery grilled "pizza". Mine had some lovely SunGold tomatoes, also local from Magicland, they raise them in hoop houses:

I added some red cherry tomatoes, mixed mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers and just a tiny bit of asiago and mozzarella cheese. No red sauce and no meat, and the crust was almost like a cracker, it was nicely thin and crunchy:

So, it's not lobster or mussels or even Ann T's nice beef, but it's what's for dinner!

    Annie

Lou, those quickie meals can be very tasty.

Annie, it's good to hear that Elery had a good outcome. Dinner doesn't need to be elaborate to be good. I think yours are always good.

My dinner was simple too. I'm not a big fan of fusion cooking. But when there is bok choy in the garden and linguica in the fridge, what do you do? You make linguica bok choy! Not a bad combination actually.

    Jim

Ann that charred prime rib and potatoes look wonderful. That is exactly the way I like my meat to look when it comes off the grill.

Caliloo that is a fantastic looking dish also. Great for summer time.

Lynd - Halibut steaks you can't beat that.

FOAS - WOW, just WOW! That really looks good. I bet that was a pricey dish but I'm sure your wife truly appreciated it.

Annie, your food looks super too but I truly hope that Elery is OK and feeling better. That must have been a real scare. Are they going to do more testing?

The Mexican Rest. that we went to the other night was OK - nothing special. It has been extremely hot here this week so we have been eating light.

As much as I hate to say this we did today a repeat of last weekend. My brother wanted more crabs so we always split the cost. So I went to the farmers market yesterday and got my fill of veges/fruit for the week plus stuff for today. So we had steamed blue crabs, silver queen corn, sliced tomatoes, sliced cukes and cheesecake. I'm stuffed!

Annie I am glad for Elery. Whew. I was holding my breath!

On Friday, I had my recipe for fried rice and caramel chicken on steamed rice (and the dipping sauce which caused the "garlic ruckus") with an eggroll. It was so late, I gobbled it up and wondered, where did that go?! On Saturday, I was $55 under budget for the monthly groceries, go me!, that I bought a ribeye which I grilled, along with the fresh zucchini, and a baked potato made in a conventional oven. I really don't like to make them that way because it uses too much electricity, but splurged this time. It's been so long since I've had red meat or an oven baked potato, I was in heaven! On Sunday I bought a camera that I am likely taking back. So no photos. Sunday's meal was leftover fried rice, and the next to the last slice of dark chocolate cheesecake.

FOAS, that must have been a dinner to remember. Beautiful!

Halibut steaks were finally on sale at the fish market for $15.99/lb. so I got two and grilled them on Friday. Unfortunately, I forgot to grease my grilling basket so the fish stuck to the wires. Not a pretty sight but very good in spite of that.

I didnÂt realize until I uploaded this photo of tonightÂs dinner how much our diet has changed in the last year or two. A few years ago, the London Broil would have been swimming in garlic butter or topped with Bernaise sauce, the corn would have been on the cob slathered with butter, we would have had a salad topped with a mayo-based dressing and probably a baked or twice-baked potato too. But IÂm really enjoying the new directions my cooking (and weight) has taken and DH now often stops at small markets or roadside stands in his travels to bring home some item to incorporate into the menu.

Wow - so many of the photos look so appetizing, I would love to make those recipes tonight!

Jim - I'm not a fusion fan either, but that looks tasty and I bet it was delish.

FOAS - what a feast! Who cares if you are spending the college funds.... Carpe Piscis Crusta! (Seize the Shell Fish)

Annie - I hope Elery is feeling better, that must have been scary. The cherries look amazing and I love the "new toy" you got to pit them.

Several of you have mentioned good prices on Halibut so I am going to have to go search and see what it is running. I would love to do either fish & chips or my old fav, Halibut Puttanesca.

Ruthanna, I had sent you an email through GW, but I'm not sure you got it\. We are going to try to make it up to Kutztown and am hoping to run into you there :-)

We haven't been doing much in the way of interesting meals, it has been too hot to be in the kitchen anyway. That said, I did make a huge pulled pork shoulder for sandwiches, baked beans, corn pudding that Tropicals posted on the CORN Cookalong, Frito Salad and Chocolate Nanner Pudding, a pitcher of Sweet Tea and we sat outside sweating in the shade and pretended we were living the Divine Secrets of teh Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Sometimes it just takes a little creativity! LOLOLOL!

Mmmmm, halibut is one of my favorite fish. I haven't seen any here, but my local fishing guide is going fishing for walleye so maybe I'll be able to get my hands on some fresh fish.

Ashley had her newest boyfriend over last night, along with his cousin. I did some steaks on the grill and bought potato salad and baked beans at the grocery store deli. The steaks were good, the rest was "eh", but the kids all swam and then sat around and talked. It was odd, she's finishing her radiology program this week, the new boyfriend is a police officer and the cousin is a teacher, so they are sitting around chatting about work and jobs and the economy, it was kind of like having a house full of normal adults with normal lives. Very odd.....

    And I didn't get pictures.

Tonight was a 15 minute meal:

Shrimp, Stirfry Vegetables and Homefry Potato's.
    The Shrimp was precooked ,
so I put them in a pot with hot water, to cover, added Old Bay and Garlic Powder.
Let them soak for 10 minutes, while I cooked the veggies.

Waiting for the Cheese Cake to cool for dessert.

Hi All! Inspiring reading as always! I'm so jealous of the seafood! Inland in PA I just can't afford the good stuff. Didn't even get to eat any Great Lakes fish on my trip home to MI this time, but I will eventually I hope.

Lou, that picture of you and great grand baby is wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing your family photos!

Eggplant something or other is in my future, since my new SO said eggplant parmesean is one of his favorite dishes. (Actually it was veal parmesean, but that ain't gonna happen at this vegetarian's house!) Eggplant parm. and moussaka are two dishes I love but rarely make due to the fuss and also the copious leftovers which for a single gal is not a plus!!

I rarely post since most of my dinners are veggie hash of one sort or another, but Tuesday I made a "Michigan Feast" from the foods I brought back from my home state. The wine was "Tall Ships Chardonnay" from the Good Harbor Bay winery near Traverse City, tortilla chips from El Matador restaurant in Grand Rapids, MI, and guacamole made with my homeade tomatilla salsa from last year. Dinner consisted of a frozen flounder entree from the store, asparagus from MI at $1.00/lb., (best I ever tasted) and chard with pine nuts and dried MI cherries. Dessert was strawberry shortcake, with MI strawberries--yum!

Lou, I'd like some of those fried potatoes for breakfast this morning.

Lpink, that is some beautiful looking asparagus.

My uncle died last weekend so I was at relatives houses for most dinners this week - collecting old photos and anecdotes for his memorial service later this month. I did grill half of a ham steak and potatoes and made cranberry almond coleslaw for last nightÂs dinner.

Ruthanna, I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. It's nice to have family around during those difficult times.

Your dinner looks good, especially those potatoes.

L, isn't the asparagus good this year? And still selling for $1 a pound at the markets, cheaper than that right out of the field. Wish I had some extra freezer room....

    Annie

    Ruthanna:
My condolences too. I've done the Photo thing too many times lately but
it is nice looking back on memories.

I'd swap that dinner, with you.

Can't complain, I had the same style Potatoes a Small piece of NY Strip and
2 eggs for Breakfast. Don't usually eat that much

    But!!!

I made the " bestess " Fluffly Cheesecake yet.
A Graham Cracker crust, with a handfull of CocoKrispies' ground in.

I might just have Cheesecake for Dinner !!!

Don't do all the Chocolate and fruit, we add them after the fact. Some like it without.
It is in the freeezer now , so I can cut it easier later,
    to separate the pieces.

Good looking food here...Jimster I would love to try some of your bok choy and linguica.
And Lou's stirfry veg and shrimp, along with some of Lpink's asparagus and Ruthanna's ham steak.

Dinners are still on the run as the countdown to my sister's arrival here begins. So I'm running around trying to match paint colours, find new yellow pillowcases, picture frames etc and being stuck in traffic jams as the July sales start here. I passed my driving road exam with a clean slate so no longer have to spend every day at the school or on the road.

So dinners/lunches here have been very late and either fast bagged salads with additions, take away deli foods or as some previous days, a quick trip to the tennis club where Johannes makes a beautiful salad with chips and either breaded fish or pork escalope complete with homemade herb butter and bread, wine, beer, water for just eight Euros.
I couldn't make it at home for less than that.

Wolf took the fish and I took the escalope. Yesterday it was tinned meatballs, potatoes and salad after I struggled home starving and very late after a one hour traffic jam before lunch.

Breaded hake left and pork escalope right.
Happy Weekend celebrations tomorrow to our American friends!

    SharonCb

Sharon, as always that fish looks delicious. I'm still looking for hake here.

Last night was a chicken sandwich. Today, who knows? Tomorrow is the picnic at Amanda's so I'll probably have pictures of food then.

Is it necessary to redo the entire house for visitors? LOL! I'm sure they would have a fine visit with the old stuff you had.

Your food pics are always a delight to the eye. These were no exception.

    Jim

Well, I'll try to post again on our dinner tonight.....this site breaks down more than any other I visit! You too?

My sons came up today to visit me and their grandparents. We were going to try a new Thai restaurant, but they were closed for the holiday. So we went to another Thai restaurant in the hope that they served sushi also. As we approached, a friendly couple opened the door and invited us in to their Open House - all the food and drink, FREE! They had just re-opened two doors down from their old location that they felt was too big. New name and new decor in the new location, very hospitable staff and good food, all we could eat! It was nice to be able to taste so many different dishes and of course, we each left a hefty tip! But what a treat! I had shrimp fried rice, Chicken Coconut soup, a curry puff, several fried spring rolls, a really good cold beef salad with grapes and a great dressing, a curry duck with fruit, tilapia in a sweet and sour sauce, seafood curry with calamari, shrimp, and scallops and my sons had all that and the sushi.

"Is it necessary to redo the entire house for visitors? LOL! I'm sure they would have a fine visit with the old stuff you had. "
...Jimster LOL......that's EXACTLY what my husband said too!
Well that guest room had an old double mattress perched on top of two old single beds tied together and it was definitely time for a change!
And it's only when guests come that one (meaning me) notices the chipped paint or the faded linen LOL.
Also it's the first time my sister has ever been to this island and our home so her visit is a good reason to redecorate a little!

Thanks for congrats on the new driving licence. Things have sure changed since I got my first licence in Canada at age 16.
Here we have now to memorize the Spanish highway code and a thick book of norms and know how to handle the car amidst nightmare traffic situations.

Teresa you had such a lucky break with that dinner invitation. Sounds like a wonderful meal!

Yesterday we had fish, salad, potatoes and frozen peas. Wolf in front of the TV (World Cup Game) and me outside on the patio. Very hot day!

    SharonCb

Sharon, I missed that piece about passing the driver's test. Congratulations!

Now I'm expecting pictures from all over the island, LOL. And how long is the license good for before you have to do it again?

    Annie

Thanks Annie! This licence is good for life for Spain and the whole of the European Community, but just have to renew it every once in a while by having a new stamp.
No more school or road tests, thank heavens.

Sure will be able now to whip around the island and take more pics. :-)

Dinner today was chicken wings in BBQ sauce (purchased) with veggies and baked butternut squash. Didn't take photos as I was too tired.
Had been cleaning out my kitchen cupboards and tossing spices from 2004 and 2005 and some buggy cereals as well eeeeewwww! When it gets hot here it's hard to keep things on kitchen shelves. Must cut some of our bay leaves and get them in there.

    Made another 15 minute dish.
    This is after the Barbecues.

Pasta Cece w Roast Pork ( Pasta and Garbanzo Beans)

While the water was boiling the Pasta, I opened a can of
    Garbanzo Beans and Roast Pork.
Combined them in a Sauce Pan and added a half cup of Chicken Stock.
Added a lot of Garlic and Onion Powder w a pinch of Old Bay and
2 tablespoons of Parmesan w a pinch of Black pepper.

Thickened this with Instant Potatoes & added it to the Pasta.
There is a lot of Sauce under the Pasta.
    Delicious!!!

Tonight was "Chopped" night at our house. My dh declared he was going to the store to get ingredients this afternoon and came back with a bag full of goodies. In the bag: shark steaks, sea bass steaks, piquillo and artichoke bruschetta spread, fig greek yogurt, a bunch of fruit, myzithera, pine nuts, almond and rice crackers and smoked paprika. Egads! I've never cooked shark before so this was definitely an experiment for me.

So I decided to do a different preparation for each of the pieces of fish, fortunately they were relatively small so we didn't let anything go to waste. I should have taken pictures, but we were too busy eating to remember! I'm sure I can use some of these ideas with more "everyday" fish and take pictures then.

First up was shark, pan sauteed in the bruschetta sauce and then finished in the oven. It was pretty good, actually. Next was sea bass pan seared quickly then coated in a little dijon mustard and coated with a crust of toasted pine nuts, crushed crackers and a little myzithera. This went into the oven to finish. This was my favorite one out of all of them! Mmm, toasty crunchy goodness.

I grilled the other two pieces and put a grapefruit/blood orange olive oil reduction on the sea bass and smoked paprika and homemade pesto on the shark. My husband and I both loved the pesto on the shark, the smoked paprika in combination with the smoky flavor from the grill really worked.

For dessert I made a fruit salad and mixed the fig yogurt with a little half and half and some vanilla sugar. The fig yogurt topping looked a bit odd, but it tasted really good with a little balsamic vinegar drizzled over the fruit.

Now I just have to clean up the kitchen! Oh well, it was fun.

I think my Uncle started them eating shark in Wildwood , NJ.
The party boats would throw them back, thought they were poisonous.
He would Filet and put them in his ice chest.
Hope you saved me a piece ?

When we caught Sea Bass; on the rock pile, they would be home Baked and served in 30 minutes.
    Talk about good !!!!!

Tonight, I cooked out of the freezer and a can again.

Had a baked Crab Cake, along with one of my School of Fishes, with a squirt of Seafood Sauce.

Opened a can of Del Monte vegetables, stir fried them with Garlic and Butter, W Spices.

Later I'll have a piece of Fluffly Cheese Cake, topped with Strawberries and Sauce.

Ruthanna sorry to hear about your uncle. Sounds like he was a well loved member of the family.
Bri, your dh can go shopping for me anytime, sounds like he has good taste! What a variety of goodies! What's myzithera?

Lpink...myzithera is Greece's answer to parmesan cheese.

My dinner was a small sirloin and fresh green beans, on my plate about 15 minutes after they were growing on the bush....would have been faster but I had to stop and scratch the mosquito bites! Wow they love all this rain!!

It was 100 degrees here yesterday, and I was abso-positively NOT turning on the stove or oven. I made a huge salad, and we had purchased fried chicken and purchased potato salad.

Tonight will be moreof the same I think - it is going over 100 today and tomorrow. Boy do I miss shoveling snow!

Thank you for the coldolences. This was the uncle who always hosted Thanksgiving dinner in our family for many years.

We had a wonderful pinic dinner at our friends' house on Sunday - grilled "fireman style" turkey thighs and breast halves with fresh apricot salsa, roasted potatoes with fresh rosemary, black bean succotash, green beans cooked with tomatoes and mint, a spinach, mushroom and watercress salad and an angel food cake bar for dessert. We each brought a topping for the cake.

We're in the same heat wave as Alexa so dinner last night was a steak on the grill, cucumber and onion salad I made early in the morning, and leftover roasted potatoes heated in the microwave.

I will be working at our Folk Festival today (not good weather for an ankle length skirt) so will probably bring home some PA Dutch food from there for dinner tonight.

Ruthanna, I too want to add my condolences on your uncle's passing.

LindaC, I am waiting for some fresh from the garden green beans. I could have just those and be satisfied.
Maybe there will be some at the farmers market this week.

We had a nice weekend here, perfect summer weather.
Friday night we grilled burgers and had fresh sweet corn and baked beans.
Saturday was grilled chicken, marinated in teriyaki sauce.
Sunday we had some really good rib steaks....grilled of course! We were lucky.... our power went out (a tree fell and took the lines with it about a half mile up the road) so we had now power from about 5 to 10. I had made a layered salad and potato salad earlier in the day, so no problem!!! It was hot in the house but we've been eating out on the deck anyway....
Last night was a burger repeat with salads from Sunday.

Tonight? I have locally made cherry bratwurst in the frig.... We'll have those in honor of the National Cherry Festival going on right now in Traverse City.

Happy cooking all!!!! Stay cool if you are in the heat wave!

Last night I made "Greek Turkey Burgers" from the current issue of Southern Living. The burgers have feta, lemon zest, oregano and onion in them. Then topped with a yogurt/cucumber/mint sauce. They were phenomenal.

Not so phenomenal is the fuzzy cell phone picture I took. But I'll post it anyway ;-)

Looks fabulous! Was turkey sort of a sub for lamb?
Great picture from your phone...doesn't look like you put an amber filter in front of the lens.
And where's the garlic? Looks sort of like a gyros in a bun without the garlic!

Lat night was Cornish hens with twice baked potatoes and grilled zucchini, so sorry no pics.

Looks great FOAS! Even using a cell to take your pic makes the meal looks very tasty. Were the cukes marinated or sliced plain?

Ruthanna, sorry to hear about your uncle.

I am so jealous of those of you who can actually cook anything right now! It is blazing hot here again, and I think I am going to pick up some grilled veggies at the Farmers Market and jsut make marinated veggie sandwiches with some pita chips and hummus for dinner. Maybe I'll splurge and swing by the Middle Eastern lpace and grab a couple of pieces of baklava too.

Stay cool everyone - this heat can't last forever

FOAS, thanks, you just gave me an idea for my dinner tonight or tomorrow, depending on when I go to the store...
Your picture turned out really good for using a cell, the color is pretty true to life.

I'm still puzzled about something I read on here. How do you stir fry canned vegetables? Never heard of such a thing.

FOAS wow what a burger! Looks delicious. Your cell takes great pictures.

    Wow, thanks for the compliments!

LindaC, I think the rule is if you put yogurt on anything it can be called Greek. Add feta or cucumber, all the more. But now you've got me thinking about gyros. Gotta make those again soon.

Other Linda - I love Cornish hens. The only reason I don't make them more is because I never know how much to make. One half per person doesn't seem enough (at least for me) but a whole one is too much. Yes I know in theory I could save some leftovers, but that doesn't happen on my dinner plate.

Alexa - My grill is right out on the deck. I had to go outside four times for about two minutes total. Turn on the grill, brush it and put on the burgers, flip them, take them off and turn off the grill. I could handle that, but not much more!

Heat? What heat? It's a grey 60° degrees here. I'm planning risotto style orzo with a little pesto stirred in, spicy pork and apple sausages and a green salad for dinner.I'll probably grill the sausages but it won't feel like summer on the deck.

I'm sorry too about your Uncle, Ruthanna, it sounds as though you have a lot a great memories of family times with him.

The turkey burgers do look good, I love anything with cucumber and feta.
