Oh yes! ci lantro I hear you I have had the exact same thought except since I'm in southern Ohio I've actually toyed with driving to GA but I'm not sure exactly where or when to go.
I wonder that "foodie" tours of actual growing places and orchards hasn't taken off as a tourism industry,like wine.

I don't know that there is anything more perfect than a perfect peach. Now if someone were to ask me my favorite fruit peach wouldn't come to mind right away because unless you live in peach country you don't just bump into a perfect peach that easily. But when I do...I always think - this is it! Honestly I don't even understand peach recipes or cream or yogurt or anything on peaches unless its not a perfect peach because I don't think they can be improved on (I feel this way about a lot fruit tho actually).
There is an orchard here that does not grow cherries - but they make a Michgigan Cherry run to pick up tart cherries to sell, a one time trip I think, and you can reserve a 10gal tub for yourself. I suppose it might be worth half an hour on the phone to call around various Farm Market/Orchards to see if anyone around or south of you does the same?

Hey Ci, I don't want this forum to get too "Michigan-centric" but check out the Michigan thread, my home state ins known for it's excellent fruit. Depending on where you live, you could either drive over, (St. Jo/Benton Harbor or South Haven are great fruit areas and nice tourist towns) or take the ferry from Manitowoc to Ludington (a nice 3-4 hour trip if you have a calm day like I did when I took the trip) and then you'll be in Ludington, another prime fruit growing area and the parks there are gorgeous!
But it won't be peach season in MI for another two months. Plenty of time to plan your vacation, lol!

Re: Places to get peaches. IMO South Carolina peaches are the best! When we have the opportunity, we drive to Spartanburg for wonderful peaches.

Dang, now I want some good peaches, and the best tasting ones usually aren't ready until July. OMG that's not that long, but the latter part of July if my memory serves me correctly.

I just wanted to add on that my post on SC peaches was versus GA peaches. Haven't been to Michigan but from all the good things I hear from you all I would love to visit there, period, not just for peaches.

Jude, our peaches here in GA won't be ready till July either. And I'm willing to give a comparison taste with the SC peaches. Love them all! I'm just waiting - the ones they've been selling in the stores aren't ready yet, but when they are, you can walk into the produce section and it smells heavenly!

Ci_lantro, later in the summer take a road trip to the Minneapolis Farmers market. It is one of the biggest and best, about 9 square blocks of vendors with all kinds of fresh fruit, veggies, flowers, plants and handcrafted goods.

I have gotten the very best peaches there. Not sure of the origin of the fruit, but they are huge and so juicy the juice runs down your arm when you take a bite!

St Paul has a good market too, and everything at that one has to be grown/produced within 50 miles of the city. Not sure if they have peaches, but it would be another good one to hit if you're in the area.

Hey Beth, I'd love to comparison test, not as competition, but for the pure joy of the peaches. It's just that I've eaten more SC peaches, having had a daughter that lived in Spartanburg for several years. My experience with Ga peaches has probably been from shipped peaches, and that was an unfair statement, so may I take that statement back? We all know that straight from the orchard is far superior.

One of our greatest pleasures when the peaches come in is peaches, cut up, and sugared on hot buttered biscuits for breakfast. We eat fresh strawberries the same way. Nothing wrong with what Linda said, either...eating out of hand with the juice running down your arm.

OT, but I had a glazed black raspberry turnover, that I bought at one of our Farmers Markets yesterday, for breakfast this morning and it was very good. I don't usually like that sort of thing for breakfast but I had been up for 2 hours so it wasn't like rolling out of bed and eating immediately. And the tartness of the raspberries cut the sweet of the glaze...very good! Ah the fruits of summer!!!!

Don't know about Wisconsin, but I'm very surprised if southern Ohio doesn't have good peaches. Here in southeastern Pennsylvania we have very good peaches.
