Woo hoo! Penzys is coming to San Diego!

I received a postcard today advertising their new store, opening soon in San Diego!

Ohboyohboyohboy! Penzys!

Sooz that is just tacky! I am so envious. We have one in the entire state of TN and it is on the other end of the state. Good for you!

I'm jealous. Here are a few things they do well; I'm still exploring their stuff, so others may wish to chime in with their favorites:

Arizona Dreaming is a not-very-hot but very flavorful chipotle-based spice blend. Great on everything from fish fillets to burgers to chicken. Salt free, too.

Sunny Spain is their salt free Lemon Pepper.

I find their Granulated Garlic to be head and shoulders above the stuff you get in the supermarket. I use a lot of it in my beef jerky recipes.

Weidner's Gardens gets my vote for prettiest nursery in these parts. It's located on a frontage road to Interstate 5 between North San Diego and Oceanside -- Here's how they say to get there -- "Interstate 5 between Leucadia and La Costa exits---We are on the corner of Piraeus and Normandy. [ 695 Normandy] on the east side of the freeway. Piraeus is the name of the frontage road. It only goes between those two exits." Weidners specializes in rare plants, begonias and handing baskets, all of which they grow themselves. No roses (boo hoo). But still well worth the stop. When you are there, ask them for their map to the other unique north county nurseries. Last time I was there, the map was at the checkout stand and free for the asking. There are all sorts of specialty nursweries right in that immediate area -- orchids, fuschias, bromiliads, bamboos, etc. Also, if you are on the 15, stop at Plant World (across the 15 fwy from Tropic World). I'm picky about the varieties I plant, so I've only planted two so far, Caspian Pink and Koralik, about ten days ago. I resisted buying any seedlings during the warm spell in February, and waited until we had a week of sun in March. Both are in walls-o-water. I'll probably plant a dozen more (including the ones I'm growing from seed). Bahia wondered why do it...To push the limits of what can be grown when, of course. And also because, having grown my own tomatoes and raspberries and cucumbers and strawberries, I can't eat store-bought versions any more (and rarely eat the farmers' market versions). The difference in quality is so astounding that I don't eat these unless I've grown them. Last year, I planted 2 plants in mid-February and a bunch more in March, despite the rain and cold. The year before, I planted a bunch in late March, even though it was an especially cold and rainy year. Both years, I used walls-o-water or bubble wrap, plus sheets of plastic to protect from rainstorms and morning frost, and I was out there in the wind and rain securing and replacing the protective covers. But I can eat homegrown tomatoes in June! IIRC, last year I got a couple by the end of May. This year I've also planted some tomato seeds outdoors using the "wintersowing" technique pioneered (or publicized) by some east-coast gardeners: Poke air and drainage holes in some some small plastic containers, fill with soil, plant seeds, and transplant (with protection) even before the plants develop true leaves. I just had to try this to see if it really works. A few of my seedlings are reaching the top of the containers so should be ready to plant out, though they're only a couple inches high. Last year I waited until the soil was warm to plant beans, and I could have planted a lot earlier. I saw some beans producing very well at the beginning of July at the community garden. So this year, I'm going to plant beans by April 1. Or maybe earlier -- I saw another garden plot that just put in some transplants last week.

Wow everyone wasent this swap fun! Sorry I have been away...mil had surgery on her back, and the guys work, so Im the one who gets to be with her. I don't mind she does alot for us in her own little way. Amy, I thought thats what your marker were made from as Ive heard about doing that before. Just have to find some blinds somewhere now. And thanks for the propagation instructions too. I now have the making for my own. And all the plants you send are doing great as well,except for the banana pup, that one is kinda iffy yet, still holding in there but hopefully will make it. Fcoffill....Gardenias are some of the easiest cuttings to start. I've started them both ways too. My best way is too stick them in a pot under where the AC drips, they root everytime! Looks like we will be starting up a second RR and Miss Red will be our host for this one. You should have a lot of fun! My DH and I did this trip in 2000. What are you using to help you find the original segments of the route? We used the Route 66: Travelers Guide and I think we had another book but I can't remember the title for sure. Sometimes it was a challenge to puzzle out some of the directions but we went on a lot of the original route including a brick section and one of the few sections of single lane road that remains. They were having trouble getting enough money to complete the route so they built some sections just one lane (9 feet wide) to finish paving the path at about half the cost. Mostly each evening I planned the travel for the next day. The path of Route 66 changed during the time it was in use so there are often alternative routes to choose between. One of the places we stayed was the Blue Swallow Motel in New Mexico - built in 1939, each room has a garage next to it for your car which was typical at that time. Drive carefully. I love going to Penzey's. If this will be your first trip to an actual store, be sure to give yourself plenty of time. The first time I went, I think I sniffed ever darn spice they had! (They have apothacary jars specifically for that purpose.)

Be sure to sign up for their mailing list if you're not already on it. They are always sending free coupons attached to the catalog. Their policy is that they will honor coupons up to a year after expiry. Plus they take multiple coupons for the same item -- I get the freebies for myself, my sister and sometimes my son. They are incredibly nice there.

I love having Penzey's local, less than 5 minutes away. While I can't necessarily tell the quality difference in all of their products, some really stand out and of course they've got a great variety. I go out of my way to buy ALL my spices there in order to support them, because I have no idea how they survive as a B&M. They've got a good-sized store in a prime location, yet I rarely see anyone in there.

I find their prices to be fairly comparable with supermarket brands like McCormick, but bump up the quantity from a jar to a bag and you really save a lot.

Thanks for the recommendations and comments! Having a local Penzysl will save me a trip to Torrance, which I have NOT taken just because I try to avoid traffic to the L.A. area, and goodness knows there is traffic!

Donna, from what I can find out, the address is 1274 University, in the Hillcrest area. One blog mentioned this address from reading the Penzys site, and it's said to be in the Hillcrest Colonnade center, taking over the old Blockbuster Video. That would make it the north side of the street, and even better, it will have a PARKING LOT in front of it--and a Cold Stone in the same center! Having a parking lot is a bonus because parking in Hillcrest needs a hunting license, just like going to SDSU with their parking problems!

I'm with Arley on Penzey's granulated garlic, a favorite here.

We also love their smoked Spanish paprika for many things, from pot roast to popcorn.

Toasted onion bits are really nice too.

And, and, and...

Well, look at that, a Penzey Frenzy! :)

I'm a little jealous. The nearest Penzey's is 5+ hours away. We live in an abiss here. No Penzey's, no Whole Foods, no Trader Joes.

WAAAAAAHHHH!!!size>

I drove by that 5-minute-away-Penzeys this evening and it's...gone. Must have been very recent. As you can surmise by my previous post, I'm not at all surprised. The good news is I checked their web site and it appears they've not closed but rather moved. Now they're 20 minutes away, but in a trafficky area I don't like going to if I can avoid it. Oh well, things could be worse. I'll still try to go there and support them.
