HE laundry detergents

Have just bought the new Whirlpool duet 9600 steam series and it will be delivered next week.

Would appreciate suggestions on he detergents. What are some brands that really do a good job. Also what about Charlies powered detergent, can this also be used although it is not labeled HE. (I have never used charlies but read some posting on it, any added comments?)

Ann, the packaging on the Charlie's that I recently received has the HE symbol on the package. :)

I still have my 15 year old TL and I am using the recommended 1 Tablespoon of Charlie's Soap. I have just converted from using Tide all my life. I don't have any complaints against Tide, I've just found that Charlie's works better at cleaning than Tide...at least in my water at home.

Congrats on the new machine.

FWIW...I use about 1/3 cup of Tide HE powder for a full load in my 3-yr-old Duet. I have soft water. My machine's capacity is similar to yours, so perhaps that may be helpful. Whatever you choose, do NOT use the amount the detergent package tells you to use with their included scoop or cap measure. Measure it yourself and learn what works. Start on the low end and work up.

Many, many people start out their HE machine experience with over-soaping disasters due to lack of familiarity. The stories are legion. Don't know if this is new experience for you. Just saying.

Yeah, just started using it, it rocks. Has that 70's detergent smell, reminds me of childhood. I don't find it to be any more effective than Persil, marketed by Miele, which I used for several years. The scent is amazing, though! It's a good value too if you do the math. You don't have to use the recommended amount, especially if you have soft water.

jrdown, I wash whites in hot, pastels/colors in warm and darks in warm. I really noticed the fading on Navy cotton kids p.j's and on a black 95%cotton/5%spandex t shirt. Both items had been washed numerous times with Tide, Sunlight. After washing with the Sears I realized that it was not great for darks. It works good on whites though. I am probably not washing in too hot a setting as my washer does not have an internal heater Cabrio with agitator. I am glad you have not experienced any fading. I am too nervous to try it out on any more darks as I wear many of these clothes to work. Let me know what you think.

HE detergent cheaper at grocery store than 'Mega-Mart'

I'm not the biggest fan of the "Mega-Mart" either, however, there are some things I do buy there. My dogs prefer their store brand of canned dog food and it's less than I can pay anywhere else. As far as your detergent, that's where their advertising "gets" people. As you found out, the price per oz was the SAME as the grocery store at REGULAR PRICE. However, since the grocery store has sales they beat the big guy. You may have run into an exception though. When I have compared prices on those items, I find that even the grocery stores own brand (at regular price) is usually a tad more than the "Mega-mart". Of course there are lots of things that affect the prices. In my case, I get the best price at the Dollar General UNLESS someone else is having a sale. I won't go as far as saying, that the "Mega-Mart" either evil or wonderful. Just like anything else, shoppers have to compare, what looks like the best buy isn't always the best. Glad you caught it and can return your unused higher priced product.
