A husband and wife are sitting quietly in bed reading when the wife looks over at him and asks the question....

WIFE: "What would you do if I died? Would you get married
Again?"

HUSBAND:
"Definitely not!"

WIFE: "Why not?
Don't you like being married?"

HUSBAND: "Of
course I do.."

WIFE: "Then why
wouldn't you remarry? "

HUSBAND: "Okay,
okay, I'd get married again."

WIFE: "You
would?" (with a hurt look)

HUSBAND: (makes
audible groan)

WIFE: "Would
you live in our house?"

HUSBAND: "Sure,
it's a great house."

WIFE: "Would
you sleep with her in our bed?"

HUSBAND: "Where
else would we sleep?"

WIFE: "Would
you let her drive my car?"

HUSBAND:
"Probably, it is almost new."

WIFE: "Would
you replace my pictures with hers?"

HUSBAND: "That
would seem like the proper thing to do."

WIFE: "Would
you give her my jewelry?"

HUSBAND: "No, I'm
sure she'd want her own."

WIFE: "Would
you take her golfing with you?

HUSBAND: "Yes,
those are always good times."

WIFE: "Would
she use my clubs?

HUSBAND: "No,
she's left-handed."

WIFE: --
silence --

HUSBAND:
"sh*t."

Aw, I thought you were asking a serious question and my answer was going to be, "Hell NO!" Love Harry a lot, but I don't need another husband. Sometimes I feel like the maid--but if I was he couldn't afford me!

Interesting discussion! I've had a ringside seat for 15 years at the marrying-for-money, trophy-wife circus. My kids attend a very exclusive, very pricey private school. Our joke is we're the token middle class family there :). Anyway, this place is a marvelous venue for observing the phenom of women marrying men who are often older and always wealthy. Within this general group there are divisions: -There is what I call the 'original wives' club. These women are first wives, who married the doctor/lawyer/indian chief when they were both starting out, with good earning potential but long before the money appeared. Many are nurses who married doctors, legal secretaries who married attorneys etc. A good smattering of college romances in there. Original wives are generally close(r) in age to the husband. They look their age, but VERY well maintained. -Trophy wives. These are always a lot younger and a lot more good looking than their partner. They are second, or sometimes third, wives. Their children often have half-siblings who are decades older. They are seriously into high maintenance mode. They are arm candy...when they appear with their spouse at any event they are dressed, made up and toned to the nines. Funny aside: I learned long, long ago to NEVER ask or assume that an elderly guy at a PTA event or back to school night is a grandfather. No,he is the dad on his second (or third or...) go round at fatherhood. Both sets tend to be SAH; it is also common that the husbands are minimally involved in the life of the family. They are way too busy working to afford the best house, the luxury car and of course the pricey prep school. The wives tend to complain that they have all the responsibility and that the husbands drop in occasionally to bask in the fatherly glow, then they are off again. OTOH the domestic responsibility is eased by a lot of help-household workers, hired out jobs and so on. If they're not working, the dads are often indulging in their own expensive pasttimes without the family. Lots of golf, deep sea fishing, private plane excursions. Travel usually consists of lavish trip several times annually. But, those trips are the only extended family time rich dad spends with the kids. Otherwise, it is original/trophy mom, the kids and the household help who hang out together. Wait, I forgot--a lot of the trophy wives get carted off at least once annually for a couples' only vacay with hubby. The wives like to sigh as they 'complain' that their money honey just has to have his week alone with her every year in Jamaica/Paris/Italy/Fiji. Such a burden. Sound cynical? Who, me???? I will say that these families and marriages do work in many cases. I will also say that the downside can be brutal. I've seen many divorces over the years and they tend to be nasty and prolonged. Wives who have been pampered housewives for a decade or more have to fight hard to get money out of the divorcing spouse. They worry a LOT about living because almost none of them have financial resources or job skills. Usually they end up leaving the MacMansion and moving into comfortable but much more modest houses. OTOH, most of them seem a lot happier once they are single and finished with the divorce. So, who knows? I'm married to a guy who is roughly equal to me in education, earning power and work ethic. My last raise brought my income a tiny bit higher than his and when I asked him how he felt about that he crowed "I feel like I can see early retirement coming closer...yippee." Heck yes! I loved being married to my late wife and in no way do I think getting remarried at some point takes anything away from my love for, and devotion to, her. I promised to stick by her for richer for poorer and in sickness and in health. We had all those things. I wasn't planning on the "till death do us part" portion of the vows happening so soon but you don't get to choose the time. Some of the posters have mentioned they treasure their freedom and wouldn't want to give that up. Okay - but my view is if you choose wisely, you don't. To me, the best marriage is based primarily on friendship anyway - all true intimacy flows from that. I enjoy myself every day as a single Dad - but why not promise to share that with someone again if she wants into my life? The idea of blending families, finances, and lives is exciting for me - not daunting. If the right woman comes along, I'd do it all over again. Doc

I've had some helpful advise on this forum quite a long time ago and just checked in for the first time in a long time. My opinion on this topic - is Yes and No. My two youngest daughters - 29 and 30 cut off any communication from me and their oldest sister two and a half years ago. They will not communicate with us, so I guess I just am supposed to give up on them. I've been to a psychologist for over a year. He told me that I need to tell myself that I did the best I knew how when raising them. The pain and heartache they have caused me is awful. I wish I could have their memory excised from my mind. My oldest daughter and son are very kind, empathetic people and have been a wonderful support to me through this. So, yes I would never wish that I didn't have them. After investing 25 years into the others and doing what I could to make them happy, I do wish that I had never had two more children with my second husband. He and his family have caused me so much grief, it would take a book to relate all of it. The family is instrumental is turning these girls against me too. I fight the bitterness of this situaiton everyday. Of course, they will always be part of me and I will always love them, but who could ever imagine that our own children could turn on us and not even want to explain why. I have the greatest empathy for anyone else that has been through a similar situation.

I am not of the "ick" opinion because of the age difference. I'm of that opinion because of his nature. To have made his fortune in the way he has (and yes, the bunnies have all been willing participants) is ick to me. But - if it works for them whatever the reason, fine. He's just not attractive to me in any way - if she wants to bed with the (IMO) slimeball, that's her perogative. "...on there engagement"... oh my.

I've thought for years that if I was not with DH any more for whatever reason, I wouldn't rule out remarriage, but I wouldn't be looking to remarry. Like Moni, I'm happy with just myself (though it is nice to have someone to share stuff with :-) ).

I'm with most of you....and yet,I have invested alot of energy these last few years convincinging myself that he is worth it.... yeah, I would really miss his income. (Shame on me, shush now) Are we playing truth or dare?

IF my DH was gone, I would never remarry~~I would lose all of his retirement. BUT I would not mind being with another man, if he was a good guy~~fun~~no fuss~~no muss;)

I like being alone and could find plenty to do, but it is like Colleen said, nice to have someone to share things with~~~men are funny creatures, nice to have around like puppy dogs;)

Oh he!! no. Never, ever, for any reason.

I love and appreciate my DH, but I'm so very tired of being the plant manager, chief cook and bottlewasher, laundress, kennel master, organizer, social director, supply clerk, mother-in-law monitor...the tasks go on and on.

I doubt I would ever remarry. Doubtful I could find one as generous loving and caring as the one I have now. He wasn't always that way; he's evolved. lol It's been almost 32 yrs and I can't imagine starting over.

I like having my best friend here all the time ....with me. I'm gonna make dinner, why NOT for 2? I'm gonna change the sheets on the bed, pay bills, vacuum/dust/mop, redecorate.....this way I have someone that notices. ;0)

Seems to me that all the jobs being complained about here have to be done whether a husband is around to notice or not! I want them done for "me," why not for "us"?

I am praying that I can remarry again. In March 2014 Jim and I plan to renew our vows on our 50th wedding anniversary. Enjoyed the smile.

I'm a widow with no desire to get married again. My ideal man would be someone who's smart, wise, funny, sexy, and financially secure, who lives about 10 miles away. Or 15. Or 20. :-)

Would I marry again? Probably not. I have been married too long to the love of my life to consider starting over. The possibility is there but the probablilty is very low.

Yes to what others are saying, the chores are there whether there's a husband or not. My husband doesn't create extra chores for me and actually helps if he's home and not at work. I doubt I could ever find anyone that I could get along with like my husband...besides, he's going to outlive me!

I dunno, arkansas girl, for instance, when I shut a drawer, it stays shut, when I put something away, it doesn't migrate out to some weird place and stay there until I put it away again, when DH is away muddy bootprints don't appear on my freshly washed floors......I love him dearly but really there _is_ less housework when he's away.

I would remarry if I met a really nice man that I fell in love with. I have enjoyed being married, most of the time, heh! I would hope that if something happened to me, that Woody would remarry, too. We have too many pets for one person to deal with, anyway. Just like with kids, they need 2 parents.

Good joke and I didn't see it coming. I've been on my own for more than 20 years and I really enjoy my independence. I have a hard time picturing myself living with someone else. I suppose if I met the right man, I'd enjoy his company but I think I would also have to maintain my own space. I love reading that many of you have wonderful marriages.

Colleen, I see your point. I am in the position now, where NOBODY cleans up, unless I do. LOL, but on the other hand, no one but me makes the messes I have at times.

I don't think I would but I would never say never. I would love to have a companion to travel with and go places with locally but I like having my own home. I have a cousin who can't remarry because she would lose her late DH's pension, but she has had a live-in for the past 8 years. Works for them.

I've written here before about my aunt who buried four husbands and lived to be 102. Men *flocked* to her. Dogs adored her. She just had 'it'! I believe she was older than I am now when she married #3.

I'm not kidding myself that any man would even *want* to marry ME should I lose my DH.

I spent yesterday and today with my delightful 60 year old cousin, chisue. She has buried three husbands. When the last one died six years ago, my wonderful 82 year old mother called to tell me, left this message on my machine: "Hi, honey. I don't know what to say...Dale's husband died. AGAIN!"

I had saved the tape and played it for Dale yesterday. She loved it. She said she cannot imagine any man being brave or foolhardy enough to marry her at this point! Gotta love that girl...she is fabulous!

Cute joke!

No, I don't think I want to get married again. With adult children, grand children (I don't have any yet, but most people in my age bracket do) and estates and wills already figured out, it would become quite complex. I also really like my independence.

That said, I'm not at all opposed to having a special man in my life. It is fun
to care about someone and know that they also care about you.

Mimi, thanks for that story. You can't make up stuff any funnier than real life. I had forgotten that my aunt didn't 'bury' #1. She married a band leader. It lasted a couple of months.He may even have been married already. Her second marriage lasted decades until #2 died of a heart attack while they were visiting my childhood home. I was at my aunt's when #3 died after hitting a long ball on the golf course. I'd known #4 for years because he and my aunt had graduated HS together. After his first wife died, he and my aunt married. I think they were eighty then. She was my 'honorary aunt', my mother's best friend since they worked together as young women. They'd planned to live together as old ladies. Hah! My aunt was 'otherwise engaged'!

I don't know if I would get married again or not...I would have a real hard time replacing what Denny and I have...but I'm also a big chicken to be alone.

Maybe I could just rent out a room to some hotty so I could look now and then and also feel safe....hehe

Funny joke. Not so funny situation at work. Someone I've "known" for a long time off and on has been asking questions about whether I would ever remarry again, among other things and called me this afternoon to discuss it tonight or tomorrow. I didn't give him my phone number. Didn't want to talk after a long day of work. I'm also totally freaked out. I haven't dated since my ex husband. He seems like a nice guy but not sure I'm even attracted to him. He's going to talk to me about it tomorrow. I don't want to go to work.

Just be upfront and tell him you're not interested, Kathsgrdn. No fuss, no muss.

I would marry my husband again in a heartbeat. He works FT at a great job, he really doesn't do much to annoy me, he helps with cleaning, the pets and dishes regularly, if I don't feel like cooking, we go out with no complaining, and he spoils me. No way would I trade that and he knows it. LOL
