Trane xv95 vs Bryant 95s

Hi

We are trying to decide between two quotes for a new furnace. Trane XV95 vs Bryant Plus 95S Our house is 2000 sq ft on two stories. OUR walls have been upgrade to about R22 as has the crawl space.

Our old furnace is about 110K BTU and rather noisy. The new quoted furnaces are both 80k BTU.

The house use to be electric heated and when gas came to the area our current furnace was installed. Ducting ( 7 ducts were installed on first floor and none on second. one in crawl space, one in garage ( which may not be allowed any more). The upstairs three bedrooms have baseboard heaters , baseboards are only used in colder part of winter since 2nd floor gets some heating through a cathedral ceiling in the foyer and some through the floors.

The Trane xv95 quote came in about $700 less then the Bryant 95s. Trane dealer will upgrade parts and labor warranttee to 10 yr parts and labor for $100 which matches Bryant. Although Bryant would be manufacturer backed warrantee vs dealer backed with Trane.

Trane dealer is smaller local outfit. Bryant dealer has good reputation and slicker operation. Wth Trane Owner and actual gas fitter (quite helpful and spent more time) came to do the quote vs experenced sales person with bryant. Both came up with similar installations.

My concern is the noise level and reliablity of furnace given our unusual duct distribution. We live in southern BC,Canada

Any comments on which might be better for our environment would be appreciated

if the Bryant is Mdl 355CAV and includes the Evolution controller, then that is the best choice by far.

I"m a big fan of dual fuel. (natural gas furnace for extra cold and heatpump when mild). It doesn't have to cost that much money. There are other brands of equipment available and plenty of contractors who don't have high-priced jobs lined up willing to work for reasonable amounts of money. Other brands offer equipment for less money and very likely just as good. There is a website I think called acwholesalers.com. You can get an idea of what the gas furance and heatpump equipment actually cost. Everything else your paying is labor. Some contractors have a way of know when the 'got one'. That means a guy who doesn't know how much equipment costs and is willing to spend lots of money and can make the contractor plenty of money. Don't get me wrong carrier and trane equipment isn't cheap but I don't always think its worth some of these high priced quotes I see around. In a climate like yours (atlanta Georgia), a heatpump would do you very well. Most of your cold weather is above 30 degrees. Heatpumps provide cooler air so they run for a longer time and evenly heat rooms.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a reason the XV95 is the one to go with? I may not be able to do the insulation (which is what makes it qualify for the rebate) because of electrical upgrade that is needed in the attic and electrician said basically all my electrical needs to be redone before I put any more insulation. I still have original knob and tube in the attic that needs to go. I can't do both the electrical and the AC/furnace at the same time. So if no rebate, I can look at other models as well. Yes the furnace is in the basement and vented through an exterior wall. He said the ductwork look good - I don't know how old it is. I attached a picture. He didn't say anything about the condenser or a lineset (is that the refrigerant line?). If the lineset is for the refrigerant, I'm pretty sure they are replacing it because that is what is wrong with the current one. It's leaking refrigerant and it's not an obvious leak so he offered that I could replace just the coil or the unit. It's got the R22. I figured it was better to get a newer unit than exchange the coil.

enrico. I used Home Reports, Home Services Review, Kudzu.com, BBB, to read about companies and their customer feedback. Nate certified & Trane certified installers, contractor warranties, company responsivesness to questions, evaluated the knowledge level of everyone I dealt with. Once we decided on the type of equipment we wanted, I asked each contractor to quote me on that equipment, specifically listing all model numbers. Things can get lost in the translation if equipment descriptions are vague. Looked at their prevent. maint. contracts. Specified that I want the best of their best in terms of installation teams, even if I had to wait a few extra days. How long have they been in business? In terms of pricing, we're near the higher end of your range, which for us, besides the furnace and AC, includes a 5" media filter cabinet and upgraded t-stat. In addition, the XV95 is a little pricier than the XV80. Also, I got connected with the co.'s Operation Mgr. for more technical questions that the sales guy wasn't sure about. I like that he's responsive. Our install hasn't been done yet, so I can't give a final report. I'm hoping some of this extra digging will pay off in terms of satisfaction. Good luck.

Hi Tigerdunes, Yes, the quotes came from 2 different dealers. Just found out the Rheem guy mistakenly wrote down the wrong model # for the HP- it is actually RPQL-036JEZ. This gives me a new ARI#, but the performance #'s were all the same. RE: Trane dealer: he initially wrote up the quote with the XV80 furnace, but did not have the ARI info handy at the time he did the proposal. Once he looked into it, he said the configuration had to be a 95% furnace to qualify for the tax credit. That's interesting that the HP is a 2.5 ton, in the proposal, he writes it up as a 3 ton. I guess it doesn't matter, I believe I'll be going with the Rheem system because the performance #'s are better. Just had a Bryant guy out here. He only has one system that qualifies for the tax credit, and his #'s are a lot lower, with HSPF only coming out at 8.5!

I like both brands but the 355CAV is a multiple stg vs furnace and the XV95 is a two stg.

and really what separates the two furnaces is the Evolution controller which is the most sophisticated in the residential HVAC market. Trane has been and still is behind the curve in this product area.

Thanks for the opinion.

I did some primative nvestigation today on our ductwork.
It is poorly balanced. The kitchen at one end of the house nearer the furnace gets much more airflow ( judged by holding a piece of paper over the registers), then at the other end of the house.
The temperature at the regsters in Kitchen read 58 deg C. compared with about 42 deg C at the other end ( after running furnace for 15 minutes

My wife has always complained about the kitchen being too warm relative to the living room.

I don't think either of these systems would help us much unless the ducting is improved. I think of a Porsche driving on a 4x4 road.

Neither of the contracters did any real calculations although the Trane fellow did say if we decided to go to a heat pump we would have to install more ducts.
So will call them up and ask them what their solution would be. No sense having a more efficent poorly balanced system
