Humidifier on return side of furnace

Contractors installed a new Bryant system for me yesterday and it included a Honeywell by-pass humidifier. Because of the layout of the furnace, coil, ducts and the shape of the room, it was simply not possible to mount the humidifier on the supply plenum where I expected it to go, so they mounted it on the return plenum, with a duct to the supply side. Theoretically, this takes heated air and routes it through the humidifier and into the return flow. But it seems to me that this air will lose a whole lot of that moisture in the heat exchanger. Honeywell's documentation and installation materials say it can go on either side, but this seems a little strange to me. Does anybody have any experience with these kinds of installations? How well do they work? Do they waste water, or create moisture issues on the cold side of the plenum?
